Jack Murray is holding auditions for the lucrative position of the band to perform at Sun Valley, the ski and all 'round winter recreational resort, for the season, he looking for a "name" such as vocalist Vivian Dawn and her band. Out of circumstance, Vivian ends up auditioning with a no name band, The Dartmouth Troubadours, rather than her regular band, Murray who ends up hiring the collective just as long as Vivian is still at the top of the bill. In meeting under this circumstance, Vivian and the band's pianist, Ted Scott, start to fall in love. Between the six-week time of the audition to the start of the contract, a hiccup occurs specifically for Ted in the long-forgotten publicity stunt cooked up by Nifty Allen, the band's publicity manager, to raise the band's profile: they, under Ted's name and signature, had applied to sponsor a child, an overseas refugee, and she's now on her way. The next hiccup: what arrives is a full-grown Norwegian woman, Karen Benson. They'd hired a nanny to tend a child, but Ted has no idea what to do with an adult. But Karen can fend for herself and state her goal: to fall in love and marry. And she falls in love with Ted. With help from Nifty, who happens to like her himself, she does what she can to manipulate the situation so Ted will fall in love with and marry her.
