Quotes

  • Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : [at the Club Moonbeam, answering the phone]  Hello. Hello.

Cheetah the Chimp : [at the Gloucester Hotel, talking into telephone]  Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. Oooooooh. Ooh.

Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : [shocked]  What's that? This is Sam. Who is this?

Cheetah the Chimp : Woo, woo, woo. Woooooooo.

Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : [irritated]  What's that? I said, this is Sam. That's what I said.

Cheetah the Chimp : Agh, agh, agh.

Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : What'd you say?

    Cheetah the Chimp : Agh-agh.

Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : [upset]  You ain't gettin' fresh with me, is you, colored boy?

Cheetah the Chimp : Agh. Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.

Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : Don't you give me none of that double-talk! Do you hear me?

    Cheetah the Chimp : Woooo-oooooooo.

Sam, the Nightclub Janitor : [mad]  Why, you... you. You mush-mouth!

    [hangs up the phone]

Cheetah the Chimp : Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, haaa.

Jane : [sees Cheetah on the phone, rushes over to the chimp]  Now what? Cheetah, Cheetah, what are you doing? Now, you give me that telephone right away. Yes. Don't you dare touch that anymore. The idea.

  • Tarzan : [inside the smoke-filled Club Moonbeam in New York]  Smell like a Swahili swamp. Why people stay?

Jane : It's what they call having a good time.

  • Tarzan : Boy little Tarzan.

Jane : And I want him to grow up to be a big Tarzan.

    Tarzan : Tarzan watch Boy.

Jane : I know you will. I know I shouldn't worry. I know there's no need to worry as long as you're with me. At first, I used to have so many little fears for myself, for Boy. But one by one, you've chased them all away. Wouldn't it be strange if someday I became as brave as you are?

Tarzan : Jane no need to be brave. Jane beautiful. Jane good.

Jane : You are my goodness, darling. My strength.

Tarzan : [pointing]  Jane. Tarzan. Tarzan. Jane.

  • Jane : Listen to me, darling. I know that man's laws are not for you. You who are as free as an eagle. I should've told you to follow your own law. To find Boy in your own way. I said this was my jungle. I was wrong. Your jungle is my jungle. I know that now.

  • [first lines]

Boy : Cheetah! What is it?

Jane : Cheetah must be seeing things. What is it, Tarzan? What is it?

Tarzan : Uguna. Strange sound in sky. Big. Far off.

    Jane : I don't hear anything.

Tarzan : Tarzan hear. Cheetah hear. Elephant hear.

Boy : Now I hear it. Like a great wind coming.

  • Jane : We're going into places where men's minds are more tangled than the worst underbrush in the jungle, and I'm afraid. More afraid than I've ever been in my life. Everywhere we'll be met with lies and deceit. Your honesty and directness will only be handicaps. It'd break my heart to see your strength caught in the quicksands of civilization. And I'll be the only guide you'll have. Will you follow me? Will you do as I say? I'll try not to fail you.

Tarzan : Jane lead way. Tarzan follow always.

  • Tarzan : Tarzan catch giant bird. Train bird. Boy fly.

Jane : Good heavens, no! I don't want him hurtling through the sky on a bird's neck. He's daring enough as it is.

  • Jane : Tarzan, what were those men like?

Tarzan : One man bad. Other man funny.

Jane : And the third man, what was he like?

Tarzan : Third man make iron bird fly. Maybe good. Understand Tarzan.

Jane : Oh, I won't be happy until I see that plane flying away in the morning.

  • Blake Norton : There's just one more detail, madam. Our local Chinese tailor carries ladies' and gentlemen's apparel. Not exactly - Paris models or Bond Street suits.

Jane : We do need some clothes.

  • Jane : Tarzan, what is it? What's Cheeta saying?

Tarzan : Cheeta say Boy gone. In iron bird.

  • Jane : You trust me, darling, don't you?

Tarzan : Tarzan always trust Jane.

  • Tarzan : [flying over Manhattan]  Stone jungle.

    Jane : Yes, a man-made jungle.

    Tarzan : Natives live there?

Jane : Yes, they live and they work there.

    Tarzan : Why?

Jane : To help them concentrate their efforts. Get things done in a hurry. Save time.

    Tarzan : Save time? Why?

Jane : Darling, you're asking me a question all the sages haven't been able to answer.

  • Jane : Tarzan, you must stay. The tailor has to measure you.

    [to the tailor]

Jane : I'm sorry to be so much trouble, but we must get clothes because we're going to New York.

Tarzan : Jane get clothes. Tarzan better without clothes.

Jane : Now, darling, you promised. Cheetah, you behave yourself.

  • Bellboy : Oh, say, lady, are you looking for Jimmie Shields?

    Jane : Yes, we are.

Bellboy : Well, usually the minute he gets back from a trip he heads straight for the Club Moonbeam. His girlfriend sings there. I don't know her name, but she may put you wise to when he'll be back.

  • Tarzan : War dance. Where natives?

Jane : There're are no natives, darling. That's music. It comes out of that little box. It's called a radio.

Tarzan : Ra-ra-radio? Woman sick. Cry for witch doctor.

Jane : You should be a critic, darling.

  • Jane : Thank you so much.

Sun Lee, the Chinese Tailor : Missy pleased, Sun Lee pleased.

  • Tarzan : Jane be boss here.

    Jane : Thank you, darling.

  • Jane : Cheeta, you remember, no more beauty treatments.

  • Jane : You were right, Tarzan, as you always are - and I was wrong.
