The production of the film, started in 1943 with a cast composed mainly of non-professional actors, was stopped several times because of the war. It was only completed in 1945 and was released in Italy only in September 1949.
In order to get the film released post-war, the film was simply re-edited to reverse the German versus Allies dynamic.
