Make forget the war
wolfgang-e-ott7 July 2010
This movie is a very good example of the German film industry during the Hitler regime. It was published in 1943, i.e. during a period when Germany was at war with all his neighbor countries. Austria was non existent due to the "Anschluss" on March 13, 1938. The German population was more or less tired of the war which was in its 4th year.

The Nazi propaganda had occupied all media, i.e. there was no longer a free press, radio broadcast and no independent film industry. Joseph Goebbels ruled the public opinion: It was strictly forbidden to read foreign publications, listen to foreign radio stations, watch foreign movies (whereby Goebbels was a great fan of Hollywood films which he watched in his private premises).

All the above must be known if you judge "Schwarz auf Weiss (Black on White)". It is a simple comedy which makes you laugh and forget your daily sorrows - exactly what was intended by the Nazi regime. The movie lives from the matchless Austrian actor Hans Moser who dominates the whole story. The sad part in Mosers life was that he was married to a Jewish wife who had to escape in 1939 to Hungary in order not to end in a concentration camp. Only due to his immense popularity in the "Reich" the Nazis tolerated him and he could play unpolitical parts in movies like "Schwarz auf Weiss" and was not put in jail according to the "Nuremberg Laws" because he refused to be divorced from his wife.

After WW II Moser lived again together with his spouse in Vienna.

For the incomparable talent of Moser I give this film 7 out of 10 points.

Actress Elfriede Datzig is a talented actress of that period. In 1940 at her own age , she played the mail girl and Hans Holts girl friend In" Rose in Tirol",.At that time she was a little bit in weight. But in this picture she has lost a lot of weight. She trimmed her brows so that she would look like a 16 year old person. She portrays the daughter of baker Hans Mosar and Annie Rosar. But she has a problem . Just like me when i was going to school. She's slow at math and Latin. It was worst with me. The scene where The professor , played by Paul Horbinger, talking to the head of the high school about her grades. As she goes to her school room she hears what they are talking about her grades . She quickly runs away from school and hangs out at the zoo and park. For me it was running out of trade school. WHen Horbinger sees her hanging out, he demands that she comes back to school. She sees Hans Holt she begs him to protect her. This is when they get to know each other. Well Hans constantly invites students to help her, But the poor girl had difficulty .She ends up studying late.He goes to the professor and gets him to improve her grades. Hans bribes him with his pastries. Has new next doors neighbors. Only to discover they are chimney sweepers. Reacting to this because this would badly effect his shop. Little he knows that one of the new neighbors is now Nellies new boy friend, whom she has fallen in love with. When she comes homes from school he greets her but she not aware of him cause of the soot. Hans sees him putting his arms around her and goes to the court yard reacting to it and puts a stop. So Hans and his friends put a plan so he can meet his girl friend at her dads house by tricking him to think he's a professor. He gets way with it So he meets her and she's afraid . As they pretend to study when her mom is up front . He then chases her to the piano and plays an tune of the 1910s, this is where it takes place. Her mother finds out and chases him out. Then sympathizes with her.Well his bakery gets filled with soot because of a mishap in the chimney sweeping. There a misunderstanding where Hans thinks that Paul had proposed to her and announces her engagement ,against his daughters will, to the relatives. As soon as they have the wedding party. Paul explains that he had no intension of the engagement.By this time she has ran to her aunts place. He goes up their to get her .
