Virginia Bruce: MGM actress ca. 1935. Virginia Bruce movies on TCM: Actress was the cherry on 'The Great Ziegfeld' wedding cake Unfortunately, Turner Classic Movies has chosen not to feature any non-Hollywood stars – or any out-and-out silent film stars – in its 2015 “Summer Under the Stars” series.* On the other hand, TCM has come up with several unusual inclusions, e.g., Lee J. Cobb, Warren Oates, Mae Clarke, and today, Aug. 25, Virginia Bruce. A second-rank MGM leading lady in the 1930s, the Minneapolis-born Virginia Bruce is little remembered today despite her more than 70 feature films in a career that spanned two decades, from the dawn of the talkie era to the dawn of the TV era, in addition to a handful of comebacks going all the way to 1981 – the dawn of the personal computer era. Career highlights were few and not all that bright. Examples range from playing the...

With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?
Once upon a time there were a group of actors, known as the ‘screen boogiemen’ who created the horror film/monster movie genre (starting in Universal Studios and later in Hammer Studios.) They were specialists who understood the psychology and performance style of horror cinema and became legends in the industry. The first was silent film star Lon Chaney Sr. (Phantom of the Opera, London After Midnight, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Unholy Three, the Monster,...

'The Devil Strikes at Night,' with Mario Adorf as World War II era serial killer Bruno Lüdke 'The Devil Strikes at Night' movie review: Serial killing vs. mass murder in unsubtle but intriguing World War II political drama After more than a decade in Hollywood, German director Robert Siodmak (Academy Award nominated for the 1946 film noir The Killers) resumed his European career in the mid-1950s. In 1957, he directed The Devil Strikes at Night / Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam, an intriguing, well-crafted crime drama about the pursuit of a serial killer – and its political consequences – during the last months of the mass-murderous Nazi regime. Inspired by real events, The Devil Strikes at Night begins as war-scarred Hamburg is deeply shaken by the horrific murder of a waitress. Through the Homicide Bureau, inspector Axel Kersten (Claus Holm) begins an investigation that leads him to a mentally disabled laborer,...

Warner Archive Collection 4th anniversary DVD / Blu-ray releases The Warner Archive Collection (aka Wac), which currently has a DVD / Blu-ray library consisting of approximately 1,500 titles, has just turned four. In celebration of its fourth anniversary, Wac is releasing with movies featuring the likes of Jane Powell, Eleanor Parker, and many more stars and filmmakers of yesteryear. (Pictured above: Greer Garson, Debbie Reynolds, Ricardo Montalban in the sentimental 1966 comedy / drama with music The Singing Nun.) For starters, Jane Powell and Debbie Reynolds play siblings in Richard Thorpe's Athena (1954), whose supporting cast includes Edmund Purdom, Vic Damone, frequent Jerry Lewis foil Kathleen Freeman, Citizen Kane's Ray Collins, Tyrone Power's then-wife Linda Christian, former Mr. Universe and future Hercules Steve Reeves, veteran Louis Calhern, not to mention numerology, astrology, and vegetarianism. As per Wac's newsletter, the score by Hugh Martin and Martin Blane "gets a first ever Stereophonic Sound remix for this disc,...

While news articles report the decline of the once-robust DVD market, film buffs and collectors have occasion to rejoice. More rare, obscure, and once-unattainable titles are being released now than ever before, from the camp classic Cobra Woman with Maria Montez to Larry Cohen’s The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover, not to mention Wings (at last). No longer complacent about home video revenue, several major studios are licensing titles from their libraries to specialized distributors who are happy to reach a modest but loyal customer base. Winner and still champion in this arena is Warner Home Video’s Warner Archive, which now offers more than one thousand titles, with new...

- Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy
A recent retrospective on the cult film-maker revealed his inspiration – a dazzling 1940s diva who could not even act
Jack Smith and Maria Montez were made for each other. They never met. Sadly, she had died before he started making films – drowning in her bathtub in Paris at the age of 39 on 7 September 1951. Yet her spirit imbued his first movie, Buzzards over Bagdad, which reimagined her teaming with Jon Hall and Sabu in Arabian Nights (1942), one of the garishly fantasies that earned Montez the nickname "the Queen of Technicolor".
Indeed, she inspired many of the works contained in the Ica's recent landmark season, Jack Smith: A Feast for Open Eyes, and even acted as a posthumous beard for his avant-garde manifesto, The Perfect Filmic Appositeness of Maria Montez, which appeared in the Winter 1962 edition of Film Culture and laid out Smith's vision for a new Queer cinema. In so doing,...

Disablity Film Festival Day, Nationwide
Marking the Un's International Day Of Persons With Disabilities, this day event brings vibrancy, weirdness and a touch of glamour to more than 20 UK cinemas. There are four components: short films from the leading Oska Bright learning disability film-makers' festival; Film Council-funded disability-related shorts; 1986 BBC movie Raspberry Ripple, starring John Gordon Sinclair as a wheelchair user with a gangster movie fantasy life (enriched by a Faye Dunaway cameo), and last and least politically correct, an archive trawl through dated attitudes to disability including a 1920s fundraiser for "the cripples of Leicester" and a 1970s interview with the world's smallest woman.
Nationwide, Fri
Twin Peaks Festival, London
You could say that modern cult TV was born the day that Laura Palmer died, and despite 20 years of X-Files and Losts, it seems that David Lynch and Mark Frost's surrealistic small town full of secrets is still...

Subtitled ‘Birds of Paradise’, the third Fashion in Film Festival will take place in three London venues on 1st – 12th December. There is plenty to see and digest too, including a wealth of rare UK screenings for films such as Red Heels (Dir. Michael Curtiz, 1925) and Ziegfeld Girl (Robert Z. Leonard, 1941).
The festival investigates costume in European and American film as cinematic spectacle. Specifically an analysis of theme, form, texture and colour – those movies that foreground costume as an enrichment of the viewing experience.
Unashamedly analytical, there are obscure screenings, some experimental, some features; from the silent era (Orientalist) to the 1970s (conspicuous display) and incorporating the influence of Hollywood throughout the 1940’s (exotica).
Films such as Pink Narcissus (James Bidgood, 1971), Moulin Rouge (1928, E.A. Dupont), Cobra Woman (Robert Siodmak, 1944), Lupe (José Rodríguez-Soltero, 1964) and the aforementioned Ziegfeld Girl starring Judy Garland, Lana Turner and Hedy Lamarr form the bedrock of the festival’s attraction,...
