Geza von Bolvary´s master piece
kassandro24 March 2002
Geza von Bolvary was a great master in melting music with film and "Schrammeln" is clearly his master piece. The Schrammeln did exist in the 19th century and were a Vienna folk music quartet. The movie starts as a comedy, almost as a Hans Moser movie, who plays a minor role as a member of this quartet. Johann Schrammel (played by Paul Hörbiger), the leader of the quartet, wants to compose and play "serious" music rather than folk music until Fiaker Milli, a strong women played by Marte Harell, finally convinced him that folk music is the right music for him. But then the movie becomes a love tragedy, because both he and his much younger and better looking brother Josef (played by Hans Holt) fell in love with Fiaker Milli. To reconcile the estranged quartet Fiaker Milli sacrificed her deep love to the younger Josef Schrammeln and married a millionar instead. When the movie turns into a tragedy, also the music changes and the beautiful song "Man ist einmal nur verliebt" becomes the tragic melody of the film.

cynthiahost10 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Yes another sneaky anti Nazi film, that was suppose to chase the Nazis out of Austria once they looked at it.this one focuses on family called Schrammmeln and friends.Partially based on a true folk singing group of the 19th century Vienna. This isn't the Joan Biez or Woodey Guthire type. This was a quartet playing light music and songs out side Johann Strause Symphonies. Paul Horbinger plays Johann Schrammeln a struggling composer married with Children, who give piano lessons, but barley makes enough to live on.Every afternoon he and his brother Joseph, played by Hans Holt and two friends Fritz Imhoff,as Georg Danzer and Hans Moser as Anton Strohmayer. Joseph is engaged to Strohmeyers daughter Barbra, known also as Betty, played by Inge Egger.Character actor Joseph Egger, of die Fledermaus fame, show up as the bill collector.whether him and Inge are related that's a question mark .Paula Pflunger plays Shrammeln wife.As I said they get together with their instruments and have jam session ,of the time, with the music written by Johann. It's when Joseph goes behind the back of his brother and takes his brothers compositions and jazzes them up a bit, goes the music publisher,Haslinger, played by Franz Pfaudler, Turns him down cold.Joseph decides to print the songs himself and with the help of Strobmeyers, sells the songs in the street. When Haslinger hears it he decides to contact him for a second chance. But Johann shows up instead .that s when he discovers that his brother was putting the songs out when he sees him singing the song in the street. This leads to a big fight between him and Joseph and the pother two splitting them up.Marta Harrel plays singer and stage actress Fiakermilli. She sees the fight and determines to bring them together cause they are good. She dupes each one of them to invite them to her show, thereby forcing them to unite together to play on the stage.they become a hit .the problem comes in when she has a affectionate and buddy ,buddy personality that cause Johann to fall in love with her .But she ends up falling in love with Joseph, although she engaged on and off to Anton Stelzer, played by Robert Lindener. But when she learns the team broke up on the account of her and that Joseph was already engaged to Betty, she decide to bow out of Jospehs life to bring them back together.Excellent Viennese musical and romantic drama.
