When Anne is on the train, she reads a newspaper about the warehouse holdup. The first paragraph below the headline is about the robbery, but the rest of the column is about something else entirely.
When Walt Radak's (Raymond Burr) henchman Reynolds (William (Challee) fires gunshots at Steve Randall in front of a wide glass storefront, Randall seeks cover, but the bullets don't hit any of the windows Randall was standing in front of.
When the gang is trying to convince Steve to go to the police, he says 'You're crazy, I'm getting out of here.' and a punch is thrown, making the light sway back and forth. While the light is moving, Walt's lips are moving, but there is no dialogue.
After the shootout with the police, Steve is driving with Shorty in the passenger seat of the truck. After being knocked out by Steve, Shorty is on the floor and his gun is laying on the seat. As a military veteran, Steve would be familiar with guns. He could have taken it and used it to hold Shorty or simply tossed it out the window. He then could have gone straight to the police since his wife had not been threatened at that point.
After being on the hunt for Steve for quite awhile, only then ex-private eye Lavitch asks Radak what Steve looks like, and Radak hands him the front page of the newspaper.
