- In 1900, brothers Caryl and Sebastian Dubrok are both trying to follow in their father's accomplished footsteps as composer musicians, but that's where the similarities between the brothers end. While eking out a living as a pianist in a combo playing popular music at Venice cafés, Caryl is the responsible one, in temperament more like their mother. He is dating socialite Fenella MacLean, who states that she doesn't care about money in wanting Caryl to pursue a lucrative but uncertain concert performance career, but her view is most-likely a romanticized one of what she thinks she wants, as opposed to the reality of truly wanting a stable life, meaning her husband, if Caryl, provides for her through steady and lucrative employment. Caryl, while wanting such for himself, isn't sure if he has the inherent talent. Conversely, Sebastian, more in temperament like their father, does show signs of genius, but doesn't seem to care about money as he gets through in life on his easy charm. Uncharacteristically, Sebastian takes in a street waif, Gemma Smith, a single mother to infant Piccolo. Gemma has survived by pulling minor scams. It is in one of those scams that Gemma, before even knowing who Caryl Dubrok is, throws a wrench in Caryl and Fenella's relationship. Resultantly, Caryl, Sebastian and Gemma, with Piccolo in tow, go on a quest to bring Fenella back into Caryl's life; he indeed wants to marry her. Complications ensue when Sebastian and Fenella, not knowing who the other is on their initial meeting, seemingly fall in love with each other, for Fenella Sebastian being more inherent in temperament to that romanticized view of what she wants for Caryl. In turn, Sebastian is unaware that Gemma is in love with him.—Huggo
