A Nice, Well-Done Change Of Pace
ccthemovieman-112 July 2007
Butch the peacemaker? Evidently. After the violent beginning with Spike, Tom and Jerry all swinging away at each other, Butch calls a halt and wants to know why. It's a good question.

"Cats can get along with dogs, can't they?" he asks Tom, who nods his head in agreement. "Mice can get along with cats, right?" Jerry nods "no," and then sees that isn't the right answer.

They go inside and Butch draws up a "Peace Treaty" (complete with professional artwork!). Most of the rest, and the bulk of the cartoon, is the three of them being extremely nice to one another What a refreshing change-of-pace. I found it fun to watch. I can a million of these cartoons in which every beats each other over the head.

Anyway, you knew the peace wasn't going to last. A big piece of steak spells the death of the "peace treaty" but en route it was nice change and still had some of usual Tom & Jerry clever humor.

Another Classic Tom & Jerry Short!
JonathanDP8126 May 2000
This film seems to be well remembered as the time Tom & Jerry signed a peace treaty. Things are idyllic for a time but, predictably, it goes sour. Probably the most memorable moment was the endless fight involving a pipe, a frying pan, and a baseball bat that the two plus Butch the dog engage in at the beginning and end of the short. I enjoyed one a bunch and you should try to catch it on Cartoon Network.

Interesting change of pace
TheLittleSongbird20 May 2010
The Truce Hurts is not one of my favourite Tom and Jerry cartoons, but it is a very interesting change of pace. As pretty much usual, the animation is really good, simple yet colourful and solid-looking and the music is a real delight, The Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite movies of all time and to hear two songs from the film in instrumental form was a major plus for me. The story is a little simplistic and predictable, but there are some really nice moments. I loved it that Spike(renamed Butch here) was the one who suggested the truce, and the argument over the steak thus jeopardising the truce was inspired as well. And the characters do still have their likability, Tom, Jerry and Spike, all three of them are great to watch. Overall, not absolutely exceptional, but very good and well worth the watch. 8/10 Bethany Cox

why can't we be friends?
movieman_kev31 May 2005
Tom the cat, Jerry the mouse, and Spike the Dog (here called Butch, his third name, his second being 'Killer') decide to sign a peace treaty to all love each other. It's weird and a bit unnatural seeing them all buddy buddy like this and their friend's seem to think so too. But by the end thanks to a disagreement over a steak, everything is back to normal and all is how it should be. This short is the second one of three on the new Spotlight DVD to be edited and I have no clue why this one was. This cartoon can be found on disc one of the Spotlight collection DVD of "Tom & Jerry"

My Grade: B

This cartoon prove that dog, cat and mouse can't be peaceful for long!

''The Truce Hurts'' featured Spike (as Butch) and T&J, they sign a peace treaty, at first they think they can get along and be peaceful, but they still will get angry with each other, at the end, their peace fall down and began fight again.

I guess everybody cannot be peaceful for longer, just like in this cartoon, they can be enemy, and they also can be friends, so I wonder how can some different animals to be get along, although it can't last forever, I think it's similar to some countries can't be get along too! I think this cartoon is rather great, although it still containing violence fighting scene, The sounds of them were good, too.

This cartoon always reminds me of the old adage "Half a loaf is better than none"

Tis is a farly typical Tom and Jerry short-a situation is designed, conflict arises and mayhem ensues. The characters behave in appropriate ways, the natural tensions between various characters leads to general chaos. The best (and funniest) part is when the peace treaty is in force and respected-all sorts of strange wonders appear before your eyes. A word of warning-it is most unwise to allow Tom to help you perform your morning cleansing routine! Highly recommended.

Can't we all just try to get along?
BA_Harrison29 June 2008
In an effort to put an end to all of the pointless violence, Spike, Tom, and Jerry draw up a truce and attempt to live in harmony together. All is going well for a while, with the trio even protecting each other from harm by other cats and dogs (including alley cat Butch, and a very toothy mongrel).

Of course, the peace was never going to last very long, and, after the threesome find a very large and tasty looking steak and decide to divvy it up (each trying to get the largest piece for themselves), they are soon back to their usual tricks.

An unexceptional T & J caper, made slightly more interesting by the unusual sight of the characters protecting each other, The Truce Hurts gets a very-slightly-above-average rating of 6/10 from me.

The piece of the steak is more important than peace
Horst_In_Translation28 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"The Truce Hurts" is an American 8-minute cartoon from 1948, so this one has its 70th anniversary next year. The fact that this was made by Hanna Barbera makes obvious immediately that this is another T&J cartoon and it's one of not too many where Hanna also performs as a voice actor. The story is pretty simple. Dog, cat and mouse are fighting each other as always and dog gets the idea to sign up a peace treaty. And it works fairly well for a while because Tom saves Jerry from another cat (helpless Jerry why???) and Butch/Spike saves Tom from another dog who apparently does not just hate cats, but even wants to eat them. But in the end their instincts prevail. After they don't mind too much with Butch getting the biggest portion of milk, things look very differently when it comes to a juicy steak. Everybody for himself is the motto. And so they end up just the way they were before signing the treaty, like exactly exactly, which was one of the funniest moments here. The final shot is also an example how these films, like television episodes frequently (Simpsons for example) basically always end with the same scenario and situation like they started. I thought this was an entertaining watch here and I can see why it is one of the more T&J cartoons. Animation's fine, plot is decent and voice acting is good too. And lets be honest here: We like the two (three) the best when they are going against and not with each other. Go check it out.

Can a Dog, a cat and a mouse live in peace?
Tweekums8 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This short opens with the noise of conflict coming from a house, Jerry comes flying out, picks himself up and returns to the fray then the same happens to Tom. After more noise Jerry comes running out chased by Tom and Butch the Bulldog. The trio start bashing each other then something surprising happens; Butch asks why they need to fight all the time; they look at each other then sign a peace treaty. Things go well as they are kind to each other; Tom saves Jerry when he is caught by an alley cat and Spike saves Tom when he is about to be eaten by another dog. Of course this peace can't last; what spoils it is a steak that falls from a passing van; the three of them can't agree the fairest way to share it and ultimately they end up fighting once again.

I liked the way this short opened with just the sound of a fight rather than actually seeing it and the synchronised way they kept hitting each other was funny. Their truce was an interesting idea and it was fun to see them rescuing each other; the response of the alley cat to this was priceless. The gag where the trio end up 'blacked up' after being splashed with mud seems a little dubious in this day and age although they just stand there stunned rather than doing anything racially stereotypical. The use of music from the 'Wizard of Oz' was a fun touch that should please people who know the film but won't seem out of place to those who don't. Overall I don't think this is a classic but it is still fun and worth watching if you are a fan of Tom and Jerry.

This high steaks gamble on peace . . .
pixrox14 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
. . . falls flat on its face when Butch and Jerry refuse to ante up to feed the kitty. Writing as a Futurist engaging in Monday morning quarterbacking, THE TRUCE HURTS here on a micro scale akin to Lady Liberty dousing her torch in disgust in New York Harbor to protest the jackals bending over backwards to carve up America's women on the High Kangaroo Court. Packed with devotees to the Art of Workplace Harassment and party boy assault perpetrators, any thought of "truce" with such malingering miscreants is tantamount to treason. As this picture documents, making a pact with a liar is as bad as deeding your soul to the devil. There are many reasons for rats having a bad name, and mice constitute a smaller problem in size only. As this story demonstrates, a peace pipe usually means water down the drain.
