After two seasons off, Gwen Stefani returned to the coaching panel for Season 12 of The Voice, and host Carson Daly was quick to address the elephant in the room. No, not her new-since-last-time relationship with fellow coach Blake Shelton, an actual guy in the room in an elephant costume. (Hardy-har-har.) Self-proclaimed “third wheel” Adam Levine had so much fun teasing the couple that Blake told him he could “go back to not mattering,” prompting Alicia Keys to step in and gently referee. MaryAnn’s quick take… A marvel. Funny and exuberant and bittersweet and cliché-busting and unexpected as hell. We are going to need more movies like this one. I’m “biast” (pro): loved Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, love Gosling and Stone
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Hopeful yet pragmatic. Fantastical yet down-to-earth. Revolutionary yet traditional. Old-fashioned in the best way and totally modern at the same time. Pure escapist cinematic joy that you don’t need to turn your brain off to get thoroughly lost in. La La Land is a movie to make you fall in love with movies all over again, just when, I suspect, we’re going to be leaning on movies a lot merely to maintain our sanity. This is an instant comfort movie, one that wraps you in its warm embrace and never lets you go.

One of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Debbie Reynolds, died on Wednesday at the age of 84 — just one day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher, died after suffering a heart attack.
Reynolds, who was among the top actors of her generation, left an enduring mark on cinema, beginning with her breakthrough role as Kathy Selden in the classic 1952 musical Singin’ in the Rain, starring opposite Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor.

Chicago – Jewel Kilcher has a long resume of accomplishments in her 20 year career as a singer/songwriter, producer, actress and poet/author. She has just released a new memoir entitled “Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story,” right next to her new album, “Picking Up the Pieces.” She appeared on behalf of the book at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., presented by Anderson’s Book Shop.

Jewel had modest roots, growing up in Alaska in frontier conditions. After learning the guitar in school, she famously lived in her car while performing in California music venues. After being discovered in 1995 – at age 19 – by manager Inga Vainshtein, she recorded her first album, “Pieces of Me,” at Neil Young’s ranch studio. The disk was a monster hit,...

Castle channels It's A Wonderful Life in this week's illogical, frustrating episode. Here's Laura's review...
This review contains spoilers.
7.6 The Time Of Our Lives
So it’s the wedding episode we’ve all been waiting for.
Or is it?
I guess if you’ve been consciously deprived of food, then a Big Mac must be welcome indeed. But that hardly makes it fine cuisine or worth the wait. So it is with the Caskett wedding in The Time Of Our Lives, which, unfortunately, is anything but.
And the fact that it’s tacked on to the end of a heavy-handed episode doesn’t help. The Time Of Our Lives begins with the revelation that Castle has been having trouble sleeping. Something has been bothering him. This degenerates into a conversation of where Beckett and Castle each speculate on where they would be in their professional lives had they not met...

50. Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Directed by Lars von Trier
Signature Song: “I’ve Seen It All” (http://youtu.be/d9zFt6M_GLo)
Who says people in a musical have to be able to sing? The list starts with a film directed by the director of Melancholia, Antichrist, and the recent Nymphomaniac films. Starring Björk, Dancer in the Dark takes place in the fantasy world of Selma, an immigrant from the Czeck Republic living in a blue-collar town in the United States. She lives on the property of a local police officer named Bill (David Morse) and his wife. She finds herself the object of a shy co-worker’s affection (Peter Stormare), but doesn’t entirely reciprocate, partly because she knows that she is slowly going blind. Terrified that her disease is hereditary and her son most certainly will get it, she works long hours at the factory,...

Jeanne Crain: Lighthearted movies vs. real life tragedies (photo: Madeleine Carroll and Jeanne Crain in ‘The Fan’) (See also: "Jeanne Crain: From ‘Pinky’ Inanity to ‘Margie’ Magic.") Unlike her characters in Margie, Home in Indiana, State Fair, Centennial Summer, The Fan, and Cheaper by the Dozen (and its sequel, Belles on Their Toes), or even in the more complex A Letter to Three Wives and People Will Talk, Jeanne Crain didn’t find a romantic Happy Ending in real life. In the mid-’50s, Crain accused her husband, former minor actor Paul Brooks aka Paul Brinkman, of infidelity, of living off her earnings, and of brutally beating her. The couple reportedly were never divorced because of their Catholic faith. (And at least in the ’60s, unlike the humanistic, progressive-thinking Margie, Crain was a “conservative” Republican who supported Richard Nixon.) In the early ’90s, she lost two of her...

Jeanne Crain: From Pinky to Margie Jeanne Crain, one of the most charming Hollywood actresses of the ’40s and ’50s, is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" featured player on Monday, August 26, 2013. Since Jeanne Crain was a top 20th Century Fox star for about a decade — a favorite of Fox mogul Darryl F. Zanuck — TCM will be showing quite a few films from the Fox library. And that’s great news. (Photo: Jeanne Crain ca. 1950.) (See also: “Jeanne Crain Movies: TCM’s ‘Summer Under the Stars’ Schedule.”) Now, my first recommendation is actually an MGM release. That’s Russell Rouse’s 1956 psychological Western The Fastest Gun Alive, an unusual movie in that the hero turns out to be a "coward" at heart: quick-on-the-trigger gunslinger Glenn Ford is reluctant to face an evil challenger (Broderick Crawford) in a small Western town. But why? Jeanne Crain is his serious-minded wife...

When Jewel sang "You Were Meant For Me" in 1995 we thought no other singer-songwriter could ever express what we felt in our girly, romantic hearts... until Taylor Swift came along about 10 years later with songs like "Love Story" and "You Belong With Me."
While these ladies certainly occupy the same spot in our brains music-wise (hey, they're both pop artists with a country twang), we've been starting to notice that they're not too different in the style department either. Come to think if it: There are a lot of contemporary artists who seem to have filled the fashion role of one of their '90s predecessors.
To prove our theory, we've decided to round up a few of our favorite '90s/modern day musician style twins. Check out our list below and tell us who we're missing!

To mark the release of Singin’ in the Rain coming to Blu-ray 12th November, we’ve been given 5 copies to give away on Blu-ray™. This classic movie stars Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds alongside Gene Kelly who also directed the movie.
Classic musical comedy starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. In 1927, Don Lockwood (Kelly, who co-directs) has worked his way up from being a song-and-dance man with partner Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Connor) to become a top movie star. His on-screen partner, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who believes that Don loves her for real, needs to have her awful voice dubbed with the arrival of talkies. The girl selected is ‘serious’ actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), for whom Don soon falls. Musical numbers include the famous title song and ‘Make ‘Em Laugh’, ‘Good Morning’ and ‘You Were Meant for Me’.

There's only one thing more unsettling than watching two out of eight competitors on last night's The Voice receive surprise eliminations at episode's end: watching Adam Levine mumble and stutter for approximately 30 hours before giving simple criticisms. Bad news, everyone: Adam is suddenly the worst! His nervous preambles are so damn time-consuming! Last week I realized that Christina Aguilera often shares valuable insight with the contestants (even if she can't remember their names, as was the case with the wrongfully dismissed Tony Vincent), and now I'm realizing a far scarier fact -- that Adam Levine is worried about not seeming nice. What could be a more disgusting fear? He should focus his phobia on Xtina's stagewear, which -- during her performance of "Stronger" on The Voice stage -- resembled Paula Abdul's freakish, bedazzled ensemble from her performance of "Vibeology" at the '91 Video Music Awards.
Man oh man.

Even if you weren't familiar with Jewel's music back when her debut album Pieces of You hit store shelves on this day in 1995 (and you probably weren't, considering her big single "Who Will Save Your Soul" didn't break until later in the year), you almost certainly knew her narrative.

It has become a classic television trope: out of boredom, or inspiration, or celebration, television creators are occasionally overpowered with the urge to break out the big production number and turn a normally prosaic show into a song and dance extravaganza.
Most recently, How I Met Your Mother celebrated its 100th episode with a rousing production number, “Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit.” But the phenomenon has been building for years, with decidedly mixed results. I was curious to see how successful (or painful) various television shows have been at attempting to be tuneful. A Wisconsin man has been nabbed on stalking charges after trespassing on the Texas ranch the singer-songwriter shares with her rodeo-riding hubby, Ty Murray. According to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune, 50-year-old Michael Lawrance Kozelka was taken into custody Sept. 15 by the Erath County Sheriff's Department. Per the police report, the intruder had shown up at the 2,000-acre sperad the day before and was warned by Murray not to return. Undeterred, Kozelka allegedly went back the next morning and approached the main residence, at which point Murray called the cops. Deputies arrived and found that...
