With fears our winter travel will need a, let’s say, reconsideration, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming could hardly come at a better moment. High on list of highlights is Louis Feuillade’s delightful Les Vampires, which I suggest soundtracking to Coil, instrumental Nine Inch Nails, and Jóhann Jóhannson’s Mandy score. Notable too is a Sundance ’92 retrospective running the gamut from Paul Schrader to Derek Jarman to Jean-Pierre Gorin, and I’m especially excited for their look at one of America’s greatest actors, Sterling Hayden.
Special notice to Criterion editions of The Killing, The Last Days of Disco, All About Eve, and The Asphalt Jungle, and programming of Ognjen Glavonić’s The Load, among the better debuts in recent years.

If all goes as planned, the Lumière Film Festival will kick off this month in Lyon, France, to again celebrate classic cinema and fete such guests as Viggo Mortensen and Oliver Stone.
This year’s edition, which runs Oct. 10-18, is taking place under strict health and safety measures, including limiting public gatherings to a maximum of 1,000 people. Due to recent spikes in cases and hospitalizations, restrictions have been changing around the country, making the festival’s organization more complicated.
While Covid-19 continues to cast its shadow over industry gatherings, growing opportunities for heritage film under the pandemic is sure to be a major topic of discussion at the fest’s Intl.
Classic Film Market (Mifc).
Headed by Bertrand Tavernier, Institut Lumière president, and Cannes topper Thierry Frémaux, Institut Lumière director, the fest is one of the world’s premier events showcasing heritage cinema and film restoration.

With the recent release of The Middle Finger on Blu-ray from Troma Entertainment I got a chance to talk to the multi-talented writer, director and actor Séamus Hanly what we can expect from Irelands newest superhero, working with Troma and the growth of independent films in Ireland
How did you first get into filmmaking?
I’ve been making films since I was little. When my parents got a camcorder, me and my brothers would make animated shorts with our toys, and as a teenager I made cartoons and home movies. After school I did a film course and have been working as an editor and making sketches for the past couple of years.
What can we expect from The Middle Finger?

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story,” what is the best movie about the afterlife?
Kate Erbland (@katerbland), IndieWire
It will come as no surprise to anyone that, as a child, I watched a lot of television. A lot. I was mostly obsessed with HBO — our single movie channel, number 2 on the dial; yes, my childhood TV had a dial, don’t ask — with intermittent deviations into mostly inappropriate mini-series (thus explaining my rarely disclosed expertise on “The Thornbirds”), and was pretty much given free range to watch whatever the hell I wanted, whenever I wanted. When Amber Nash started on Archer, she was practically an unknown in the industry.
Now she's a beloved voice actress who has set her sites on goals to get out from behind the facade of Archer's "Pam" Poovey.
Find out what might be up with Poovey during Archer Season 8, what Amber would do if her voice betrayed her and so much more as you read highlights from our interview below.
When I was at Nycc, everything was top secret, and we were all in the dark. They were even playing as if all the characters were going to be different, new names, etc. You're wearing pants, and nobody is calling you Pam. What's the biggest difference in your character this season?
I think you've got all the information that I think I can give away. She is going by Poovey. I can't even say "she" is going by Poovey...

Based on his memoir, "Fresh Off The Boat" is Eddie Huang's story. It's certainly not my story. I've never been an 11-year-old son of Taiwanese immigrants moving from Chinatown in Washington, DC to the suburbs of Orlando. "Fresh Off The Boat" can't be my story. But I hope Eddie Huang would forgive my feeling that, at least to some degree, "Fresh Off The Boat" is absolutely my story. In the early '90s, I was a 13-year-old son of Canadian immigrants living in Mississippi, going to a middle school in which I was one of a dozen white kids and the only Jewish kid. I didn't have to explain stinky tofu to my colleagues at lunch, but I assure you that my bagels were plenty confusing. I spent a lot of time being called Bud Bundy, because at the time, all of my classmates were watching a lot of Fox...

(Spoiler alert: Don’t read this if you haven’t seen the episode, which has only aired on the East Coast as of this writing.) People will talk about this for years. “Homeland” ended its third season with a very brave, very strange hour of television, one that broke almost every rule a TV show can break. First: It killed off one of its two leads. It’s not so rare for shows to kill off a major character, but it’s shocking for a hit series to kill one of two main characters whose relationship has fueled the show for three seasons.

The actor, 44, on climate change, losing her father young, and why she'll never understand Woody Allen
I've always been pale. It's partly to do with being from Australia, where the hole in the ozone layer is at its most intense, and partly to do with my mother, who very quickly put an end to me sunbathing in baby oil as a teenager. I would go red as a lobster. She told me to accept what I had.
I lost my father young. The earliest memory I have is seeing him in bed when I was 18 months old – I later learned he was recuperating from his first heart attack at 32. He died when he was 40 [of a heart attack], but I don't think I really quantified the consequences for me until much later, when my husband reached 40. I was euphoric at his birthday party, like a weight had been lifted. And I thought: "Now there's the detritus.

Jeanne Crain: Lighthearted movies vs. real life tragedies (photo: Madeleine Carroll and Jeanne Crain in ‘The Fan’) (See also: "Jeanne Crain: From ‘Pinky’ Inanity to ‘Margie’ Magic.") Unlike her characters in Margie, Home in Indiana, State Fair, Centennial Summer, The Fan, and Cheaper by the Dozen (and its sequel, Belles on Their Toes), or even in the more complex A Letter to Three Wives and People Will Talk, Jeanne Crain didn’t find a romantic Happy Ending in real life. In the mid-’50s, Crain accused her husband, former minor actor Paul Brooks aka Paul Brinkman, of infidelity, of living off her earnings, and of brutally beating her. The couple reportedly were never divorced because of their Catholic faith. (And at least in the ’60s, unlike the humanistic, progressive-thinking Margie, Crain was a “conservative” Republican who supported Richard Nixon.) In the early ’90s, she lost two of her...

This week’s episode of Merlin opens like so many have this season: with Merlin and Arthur alone, squabbling like an old married couple. Okay, now I get it. This is the HoYay, right? This is the “homoeroticism” everyone keeps talking about. No touching, no kissing, no nuzzling, no brief nudity or adult situations, just…bickering. If I wanted to watch a couple spend all its time quarreling, I’d just visit my parents.
Anyway, our intrepid couple is walking through the woods when they hear a scream. They rush to a village where the villagers are having their version of a Fried Green Tomatoes barbecue (“Secret’s in the sauce!”) by tying a very creaky old lady to a wooden stake and planning to set her on fire. Seriously, this lady is so old and so desiccated that she’d probably spontaneously combust if you just rubbed her forearms together.

Australian start-up Posse has relaunched after a new round of investment.
The start up was formerly a music event ticketing peer-to-peer site, but closed down and relaunched after deciding that the core idea was not scalable in the Australian market.
The company has retained its name and online properties, but has an entirely new strategy and revenue model.
Posse CEO Rebekah Campbell told Mumbrella that although the company had undergone a significant shift in direction from the venture originally granted $758,000 in funding from the ministry of innovation, among other funding sources, “A lot of the value of the company is in the learnings.”
Posse is now a social platform that allows users to share their favourite places from all over the world with friends, and gives retailers the opportunity to recognise or reward their best customers.

In this piece originally posted on The Conversation Sinclair Davidson of Rmit University argues that Fairfax Media desperately needs a patron.
Every business needs paying customers. Who those paying customers are varies from business to business. The single largest paying customer for Australian universities, for example, is the federal government. Similarly the ABC’s only paying customer is the federal government. The point being that the single largest customer might also own the organisation.
Fairfax used to have lots of advertisers as paying customers – but no longer. Bottom line is Fairfax is broke and dying before our very eyes. They need a viable business model quickly. The old model of selling eyeballs to advertisers isn’t going to sustain Fairfax much longer.
Fairfax has announced that their metro papers will move from broadsheet format to tabloid size next year. It isn’t clear to me, however, that the size of the paper is the problem.

"The San Francisco Film Society's annual French cinema roundup stretches its national mandate a bit this year," writes Max Goldberg in the Bay Guardian, noting the inclusion of The Kid with a Bike by Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, "one of the best films of the year regardless of country of origin," and Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki's Le Havre. "Also worth checking out is Pierre Schöller's fascinating train wreck of an information age political thriller, The Minister, starring longtime Dardennes player Olivier Gourmet as a compromised bureaucrat. The Long Falling [image above], Martin Provost's second match up with actress Yolanda Moreau after Séraphine (2008), purposefully shuttles from a hardened Belgian village to an unmoored Brussels and features Agnès Godard's characteristically probing camerawork, itself a pride of French cinema."

Edward Norton goes over a scene with director John Curran
Opening this Friday is the drama Stone, starring Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, and Milla Jovovich. The film opened this year’s Chicago International Film Festival, and you can read my review of the movie here.
The morning after the festival opening, I sat down with director John Curran and Edward Norton in a roundtable interview to discuss what the film means to them, what working with the legendary Robert De Niro is like, what Norton looks for in his characters, and more.
John, you were quoted as saying that you let Edward do his thing. But Mr. Norton, you were quoted as saying that you played the character that John wanted you to play. How much of the character Stone was on the page, and how much did you two create together?
John Curran: This one was a leap of faith.

Pretty Little Liars channelled their inner Prom Night/Carrie last night as the girls prepared for the Rosewood Homecoming Dance and tried to solve the mystery of "A", before the elusive stalker wreaked even more havoc than before. But even during this time of crisis, the young ladies still managed to make sure that their makeup and hair was flawless and that their priority of the week (homecoming) was in order.
The Pretty Little Girl's Do's and Don'ts For Preparing For A Dance
#1 Make Sure That Unexpected/Unwanted Surprises Are At A Minimum
The girls intervene between Aria's bout of moping (which they think is due to her parents fighting, but has Ezra written all over it) and try to get her excited about homecoming, but Aria states that she isn't going. After Spencer announces that she is taking Alex (Diego Boneta), Emily says she's bringing a mysterious someone (who...

Sixgun is an exercise in the unnecessary, set to the tune of the old west. So much of it just doesn't work, or is out of place. The filmmakers intended to present their audience a dusty, horse opera with moods and tones that range from dire to slapstick, and they don't even come close to pulling it off.
The opening act creeps on at the pace of a sickly old horse that back in the day would have been put out of its misery. We are introduced to Tommy Hill, (played by none other than Tommy Hill, go figure), an old, retired bounty hunter living on his not-so-well-to-do ranch. It takes 15 or 20 minutes for Tommy to be propositioned to get back on the saddle and seek out a killer on the loose. Those minutes would have been justified had we needed that much time to get to know our one-dimensional bounty hunter.

As iconic news host Larry King prepares to make his exit later this year, much has been and will continue to be written about how King's time as king of cable news is long gone. People will talk about his softball interviews, laugh at his out-of-touch moments, point to his massive ratings declines. But while this goes on over the next few months, quite possibly here at Mediaite as well, remember what makes Larry King great too. Here's my favorite Larry King moment ever.

Like her or not, you have to give Michelle Obama credit for not only sparking debate about fashion but also challenging our perceptions of a First Lady. As expected her azure Peter Soronen gown at the 2010 White House State Dinner was scrutinized to the hundredth degree. Most commenters loved it, though some thought the look was a little too glam...Here's what you had to say:Star Warrior commented: "I think she should whatever she chooses to do with her fashion statements. People will talk about you regardless."Kenya wrote: "I'm not mad at Michelle Obama for staying true to herself."...

The ‘Gossip Girl’ star has to get intimate in her new movie ‘The Town’ – in which she plays the ex-girlfriend of a gang leader who is trying to turn his back on a life of crime - and admits she was out of her comfort zone when filming it.
She said: "I have a sex scene in this film and that's never comfortable. You think, 'Oh, this is going to be so awkward.' But this scene isn't supposed to be a steamy one - it's sort of tragic. I'm pretty much crying in it."
The 22-year-old beauty also revealed how she relies on her “gut” instinct when she chooses her roles because otherwise people would be able to convince her to do what they want.
She told America’s Esquire magazine: "I surround myself with people I trust, but ultimately it's my gut. That's what I trust. Because I...
