"Pünktchen und Anton" is a West German German-language film from 1953. These 90 minutes are probably the most known work by director Thomas Engel, who also worked on the script. The script, in this case, is an adaptation of Erich Kästner's children's book with the same name. But sadly, it did not work out well at all I must say. This could have been a really nice and also touching story in the face of the two kids' different social backgrounds, but instead the makers went for cheap laughs and weak character elaborations for the entire film. Oh yeah, I forgot to say it is a black-and-white movie. And the dramatic moments, such as the burglary, are not working really well either, actually even worse than the fun parts. It is tough for me to say if this is due to the script or the original work, but looking at how praised Kästner is still today, I have to say that I would be surprised if his base material would be as forgettable as this film. Still the movie did not get me curious at all about checking out the literature. And you should watch something else instead, maybe a later version of the same story. I really hope these are superior.
