Despite their seemingly disparate subject matters, “My Father's House” and “Lost Course”, two independent Chinese documentaries separated by over a decade, have one important thing in common. Their protagonists all easily fall into the category of naïve dreamers. Nigerian pastors in “My Father's House” and grassroots activists in “Lost Course” believe that, despite the Prc turning more authoritarian with each year, they might have an impact on religion or local politics.
“Lost Course”, overwhelming in its scale and longitudinal approach (the film was shot over the course of six years and then post-produced during the next three), has the feel of a sprawling 19th-century novel. The film captures turbulent local politics in the boisterous village of Wukang, and is framed by opening and closing scenes shot from a fishing boat aimlessly wading through a river. At one point, a character likens Wukang in his speech to a ship. Through these images,...

It is very difficult to find women who are treated with respect and equality, especially in the older anime; with Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist being an exception. Female characters barely ever got the opportunity to shine without being sexualized. From a feminist point of view, anime and manga were very behind in the treatment of women. Arakawa had always been someone who stood out from these themes.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Being a woman herself, she needed to stand against norms and stereotypes by first creating an action-oriented manga. During those times, and sometimes even now, shonen was regarded as a male-dominated genre, being both the mangaka and the audience. On the other hand, shojo was more for the female population.

Despite five movies in, the Sony cinematic universe is still yet to have a sense of direction. And with Madame Web becoming a colossal failure, the future of this universe will highly depend on how Venom 3 turns out. And like every other Sony movie released since the advent of this cinematic universe, Tom Hardy’s Venom: The Last Dance is also rumored to star Spider-Man in some capacity.
Tom Hardy’s Venom
And per a new rumor, we might see Hardy’s Venom taking on the web-head in the threequel, which might end with the symbiote becoming a father figure to Peter Parker.
Venom Is Rumored to Take Peter Parker Under His Wing in the Threequel
From Ben Parker in the Raimi films to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Happy Hogan in the MCU, Peter Parker has had various father figures in the realm of live-action. With Andrew...

Pink Floyd had one of the most remarkable reinventions of any classic rock band. The psychedelic pioneers lost their creative leader when they parted ways with Syd Barrett in 1968. After searching for a way forward without him, they eventually found their path and became one of the biggest bands of the 1970s with the impactful The Dark Side of the Moon. That album was a cornerstone of their career, but several underrated Pink Floyd songs from the band’s catalog deserve recognition. (All songs presented in chronological order).
1. ‘The Nile Song’ Album: More
Pink Floyd’s first effort without any contribution from Barrett was their soundtrack to the 1969 movie More. Without their mercurial leader and with the freedom to create for someone else’s project instead of their own album, the band showed off a range of styles. “The Nile Song” proved to be the most unprecedented song on the tracklist.

The undisclosed location to which Natalie (Juliette Lewis) was whisked away in the Season 1 finale of “Yellowjackets” gets more concerning as Season 2 progresses. In the Season 2 premiere — written by showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson and directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer — Natalie finds herself tied to a bed at a wellness retreat run by Lottie (Simone Kessell), who remains as magnetic to followers today as she was in the wilderness as a teen (Courtney Eaton).
Read More: Winter Is Here on ‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2 — and British Columbia Ran Out of Fake Snow to Make It Happen
There’s more than a touch of the wilderness about Lottie’s upscale wellness center: A procession of white-clad, animal-mask-wearing followers burying a naked man isn’t the usual accompaniment to tasteful neutrals and suburban mom wall art. But production designer Margot Ready and her props team relished the opportunity to create animal masks...

78 years after its publication, George Orwell's "Animal Farm" is more relevant than ever. The satiric fairy tale in which the four-legged denizens of an ineptly run farm expel their alcoholic human minder from his estate and install a utopian society where "all animals are created equal," only to watch their every lofty ideal be corrupted by greed and a wanton thirst for power, was initially written as a response to the Stalinist system that darkly blossomed out of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in the Soviet Union.
In today's authoritarian societies, there's nary a pretense of equality. Oligarchies are all the rage, and these venal strongmen prop themselves up by catering to the vilest prejudices of their citizenry. They target the powerless in the hopes that their hateful, poorly educated supporters never suspect that they are the author of their misery.
The common denominator is, of course, the axiom that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Andy Serkis had a unique breakout performance with his turn as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies. Though his face isn’t actually seen, every nuance of his acting is captured and put up on the screen. He would go on to be the motion capture star for films including King Kong, also directed by Rings director Peter Jackson, as well as the new Planet of the Apes series. After a string of films where Serkis had actually appeared on camera, he also set his sights on working behind the camera.
ComicBook.com reports on Serkis as he discusses what his future in directing holds. In an interview with the mo-cap actor, he expounds that while he does get excited about big franchise projects, he’s interested in telling more intimate and idiosyncratic stories. “I’ve got a whole slate of films that I’ve been developing over the years.

Considering how many songs they recorded over eight years, The Beatles miraculously avoided writing too many duds. Paul McCartney once said it was still a mystery to him that the band formed at all. What isn’t a mystery is the Fab Four’s impact on popular music in the 1960s and beyond. There were plenty of hits, but several boring Beatles songs found their way onto the band’s albums (presented in chronological order).

Ever since the printing press was invented, there's been no shortage of instances of books being banned. The reasons for these bans run the gamut from the religious to the political to the moral. Because the standards of decency have changed so much over the centuries, books that were once considered obscene are now socially acceptable, and sometimes, it's the other way around.
While the general intent of banning a book is to prevent readers from engaging with it, it often has the opposite effect. Labeling a book "forbidden" can bring more attention to it. This "Streisand Effect" makes a lot of sense. When the powers that be condemn a piece of media, this only increases the audience's curiosity about why it's so controversial. Not only have bans led to books becoming more popular, but it has also led to them getting the big screen treatment. Hollywood has rarely shied away from capitalizing on controversy,...

“The Batman” actor Andy Serkis is set to showrun and direct “Madame!,” an epic period series about the life of Marie Tussaud, the visionary French artist known for her wax sculptures and the world-famous museum Madame Tussauds.

The compelling series will shed light on this ruthless yet pioneering business woman who built her business, starting in 18th century Paris, during the age of enlightenment, the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, before travelling to England.
“This is no straight up period drama, it is a hilariously crazy, no holds barred, anarchic, punk caper conjured from the curiously twisted mind of a fabulously post-truth executioner’s daughter!

Andy Serkis ("Mowgli") will direct a live-action, performance capture adaptation of author George Orwell's 1945 novel "Animal Farm", to be produced by Serkis and Matt Reeves ("The Batman") for streaming on Netflix:
"...with it's parallels to today's destructive socialist hypocrisy, Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was written as an allegory for the 'Russian Revolution' (1917) leading into the deadly 'Stalinist Era' of the 'Soviet Union', with farm animals taking the place of historical figures.
"'Old Major', the aging boar on the 'Manor Farm', summons the animals on the farm together for a meeting, during which he slanders all humans.
"When Major dies, two young pigs, 'Snowball' and 'Napoleon', assume command and consider it a duty to prepare for the 'Rebellion'.
"The animals revolt, driving the drunken, irresponsible farmer 'Mr. Jones', as well as 'Mrs. Jones' and the other human caretakers and employees, off the farm, now renamed 'Animal Farm'.

Andy Serkis (Venom: Let There Be Carnage) is directing an animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novella Animal Farm for Aniventure and his company The Imaginarium. Production is underway at Cinesite, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary as a world leader in animation and VFX.

The title, you might not be surprised to hear, is ironic: In Rithy Panh’s frenetic, splenetic new hybrid essay film, everything will most assuredly not be Ok. Humans, with our immense capacity for microscopic and macroscopic cruelty, will not be Ok. Animals, even if they manage to turn the tables on us, will also not be Ok. The planet, in a near-future shaped exclusively by the evils of the near-past, will be the very definition of not-ok. And perhaps the battered viewer — assailed by an interminable 98 minutes of untethered, oneiric narration over split-screen footage of genocide and industrial livestock slaughter, while an “Animal Farm”-inspired sci-fi drama plays out in handmade, clay-modeled diorama — will be the least Ok of all. The little clay critters are cute, though.
In one regard, “Everything Will Be Ok” is as good as its word. Panh crams so much into his film that it...

“Sound design wasn’t even a thing in the 60’s,” exclaims Julian Slater. The two-time Oscar nominee had his work cut out for him then, while constructing the sound for Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho.” The horror-tinged drama sees present day fashion student Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) dragged into the past when she grows obsessed with the spirit of Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), a young chanteuse from the 1960s. Slater reveals that the key to the sound design for this time-hopping was “all experimentation.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Those weird things that you would never think about are the things that make for more sonic motifs in the movie,” explains Slater of his experimental process. In order to capture these “weird things,” he frequently had team members recording the sounds of Soho at 3 o’clock in the morning. It was an attempt to capture the seedy underbelly of...

There are likely a lot of people that remember this book from high school and can possibly still recall how troubling it turned out in the end no matter how positive it was supposed to be initially. The heroic farm animals that overthrew their cruel human oppressors, only to eventually realize that the leaders they embraced would eventually sell them out to take over and act in the same manner as the oppressors they were liberated from. There are some schools that sought to ban this book for its ideas and story, but while there are plenty of stories out

Dussart is currently at the Venice Film Festival where Indian filmmaker Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s “Once Upon a Time in Calcutta,” co-produced by her Catherine Dussart Productions, is playing in the Horizons strand. Dussart is also on board Sengupta’s next, “Birthmark,” about two women who become part of a catastrophic plan hatched by a patriarchal family, which is at the Venice gap financing market.

Things that start off with the best of intentions often, over time, become the very thing they were fighting against (see the pigs in Animal Farm). And a waterfall begins with a single drop of water. So movements for change often begin with a single person, the one willing to speak that which others are only thinking, the one with either little or nothing left to lose, or simply no more time or patience to put up with ill treatment. How do the Davids triumph over the Goliaths, in a world that continually squashes the former and protects the latter? Icelandic filmmaker Grímur Hákonarson (Rams) returns to familiar territory in his recent feature The County. The plight of farmers, their vulnerability to both the natural...

Viktor Kossakovsky brings us an astonishing triptych of pigs, cows and chickens in Gunda, his poignant evocation of life as a farm animal. Executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix, this sumptuous meditation opts for lush black & white over color, skirts dialogue & music in favor of SFX and willfully reduces plot to bare minimum—all in favor of experiential cinema. If this sounds boring, caveat emptor: Gunda is an art film, and requires the right mindset to appreciate its full depth. In the latest in his series of Rewind reviews looking back at the career of writer/director Ben Wheatley, Chris takes a look at his 2015 film, High Rise.

Ben Wheatley films are rather good, so I have been re-watching them. The latest is High Rise, which is based on the 1975 novel by J.G Ballard. I was a big fan of the novel, and this is an excellent telling of a wonderfully chilling story. Dr Lang (Tom Hiddleston) is newly arrived at a new high-rise development (Canary Wharf… before Canary Wharf was a thing). Lang can put on whatever mask is required to fit into his circumstances. In the early ’30s, a young Welsh journalist named Jones uncovers a secret famine in Stalin’s Soviet Union, a revelation that helps inspire George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” The fact-based Mr Jones is a gripping biographical historical political thriller about the little-remembered courageous Welsh journalist Gareth Jones (James Norton), but in a way, it is also a haunting tale of the critical importance of independent investigative journalists committed to truth.
Acclaimed Polish director Agnieszka Holland helms the English-language Mr Jones, a powerful portrait of courage in truth-telling, inspired by the real-life Welsh journalist Gareth Jones.
A good idea for a biopic doesn’t always find its ideal reflection on screen. Look what happened to Leonardo DiCaprio’s J. Edgar (as in Hoover), Hilary Swank’s Amelia (as in Earhart) and Colin Farrell’s Alexander (as in the Great). To that list of stymied ambition, add Mr. Jones, as in Gareth Jones (James Norton), the Welsh journalist whose exposé of Soviet atrocities leading up to World War II pissed off so many higher-ups that he never lived to see the age of 30.

Polish director Agnieszka Holland is best known for epic films that explore the inhumanity of World War II, the Oscar-nominated “Europa, Europa” and “In Darkness,” both set in German-controlled areas during the war, among them. In a way, her new film, “Mr. Jones,” begins in similar territory, as a young Welsh journalist tries to warn British diplomats of the dangers posed by an ascendant Adolf Hitler in 1933.
But it doesn’t take long for “Mr. Jones” to turn away from Hitler and Nazi Germany and move to a different totalitarian regime and a different atrocity of the era. The “Mr. Jones” of the title is Gareth Jones, a real-life journalist who traveled to the Soviet Union in 1933 and found evidence of the Holodomor, a man-made famine that killed millions in Ukraine.
It feels as if the story would be a ripe subject for Holland. The filmmaker has not only made monumental films about historical tragedies,...

Andy Serkis ("Mowgli") will direct a live-action, performance capture adaptation of author George Orwell's 1945 novel "Animal Farm", to be produced by Serkis and Matt Reeves ("Dawn of the Planet of the Apes") for streaming on Netflix:
"...with it's parallels to today's left wing fascism and politically-driven 2-tiered Us justice system, Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was written as an allegory for the 'Russian Revolution' (1917) leading into the 'Stalinist Era' of the 'Soviet Union', with farm animals taking the place of historical figures.
Jones' and the other human caretakers and employees,...
