Mill Creek’s latest disc collection gathers three Columbia Sci-fi faves and throws in a Blu-ray debut for a fourth. It’s a good selection: two giant Ray Harryhausen monsters, one marginal bad-taste Sam Katzman zombie epic, and a quirky Lou Costello comedy with Dorothy Provine doing a wholesome take on Allison Hayes’ biggest role. Do these encodings measure up to fancier editions? We give them a spin.

Located in the UK, Powerhouse/Indicator is the latest to jump on the bandwagon with lavishly appointed blu ray sets each featuring three of his films. Though all these movies have been previously released through other companies, Powerhouse has upped the ante with fresh transfers and a broad slate of new extras.

Well, another year spent in the company of classic cinema curated by the TCM Classic Film Festival has come and gone, leaving me with several great experiences watching favorite films and ones I’d never before seen, some already cherished memories, and the usual weary bag of bones for a body in the aftermath. (I usually come down with something when I decompress post-festival and get back to the working week, and this year has been no exception.) There have now been seven TCMFFs since its inaugural run in 2010. I’ve been lucky enough to attend them all, and this time around I saw more movies than I ever have before—18 features zipping from auditorium to queue and back to auditorium like a gerbil in a tube maze. In order to make sure I got in to see everything I wanted to see, I had to make sure I was...

There aren’t a lot of horror and sci-fi titles hitting DVD and Blu-ray shelves on September 15th, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some fun releases to look forward to on Tuesday. Scream Factory is resurrecting another cult classic in HD—The Legacy, starring the always badass Sam Elliot—and for those of you David Duchovny fans out there, season one of Aquarius is being released by Anchor Bay this week, too.
There are also a handful of "B Movies" coming our way in various forms courtesy of Mill Creek Entertainment, and for those of you who didn’t pick up the Halloween box set last year, September 15th is your chance to finally own the Producer’s Cut of Halloween VI: The Curse of Michael Myers, as Lionsgate is giving it a standalone Blu-ray release.

If you've spent any considerable length of time watching film then you know there are bad movies -- and then there are the really bad ones. You can identify these stinkers because there's something just not quite right about them. Sometimes it's their budget (or lack of one). On other occasions money wasn't the problem; it was the acting, or the writing, or the special effects, or the over-the-top concept. Sometimes it's several of these reasons, and on really spectacular occasions, when the stars and moon are in alignment, it could be all of these things.
Throughout my cinemaphile life I've seen my share of bad movies. Some of them are even ones that I like for pure nostalgic reasons, or because I like to root for the underdog that's going uop against the deep pockets of the Hollywood machine, or because the premise is so absurdly high concept ("Look!

Syfy has done a very clever thing; it has tapped in to the great, financially strapped, not going out anywhere fancy, stay at home masses, and served up the kind of great B films our parents and grandparents enjoyed in their youth. Films like The Blob, Creature with the Atom Brain, The Godzilla films, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Fly and on an on. These fun films, laced with implausible plots, brilliant poster art and laughable dialogue demanded that you show up ready to suspend disbelief, prepare for a scare and always left the audience entertained. Syfy network and B-movie king Roger Corman have teamed up for yet another completely preposterous fish tale that borrows heavily...
