Well-acted and extremely well-written
SMK-429 November 1999
A witty comedy which is not easy to characterise. It is a truthful adaptation of a novel, but it comes without the high-brow baggage we normally expect when we see the words "literature adaptation" on a movie poster; both book and film are very accessible. It is a romantic comedy, but the romance plays second fiddle within the context of the whole story. It is a satire, but its satirical strain is not aggressive, it is more observant. The central theme of the film is the male bonding between three men of different age, different social status, and different education. And yet again, this description is misleading as well, because the film is much less serious than these words suggest. Superficially, this is just well-made fluffy entertainment, well-acted and extremely well-written, but there is a lot more below the surface which rewards repeated viewing.

One thing that always puzzled me is why the "Geheimrat" character has been renamed from Tobler to Schlüter. Did the Swiss chocolate manufacturer "Tobler" object?

A warm film

Warning: Spoilers
"Three men in the snow" is a form of innocent cinema that has gotten more and more rare these days. It tells the story of a millionaire, who wants to explore the "normal" life and checks into a hotel under wrong name, leading to a series of comical occasions.

While the story is entertaining and able to leave the audience behind in a good mood, it is quite simply structured. Most of the ending is quite foreseeable, a fact that nonetheless never bothered me while watching it.

What I like so much about this movie is the warmth it carries. Unlike many modern films, where mainly difficult issues and problems of our society are issue (Which is often great), this is just pure feel-good-cinema. Of course thereby it also loses some depth, but if you're down a bit and could use a better world, this is definitely a film for you.

Very good, with minor flaws.

Having watched back to back the two versions - Paradise For Three (1938) and this, the mother-tongue but later version (1955), I am not sure which is the better version. In having not read the actual story, I can't say which is nearer to the literature. The basic skeleton has been maintained same in both version, A Millionaire wins a prize in a slogan competition - sponsored by his own empire - and accepts the prize - a fortnight in a ski resort. That's where the snow comes in - not because of getting marooned in some snow storm (for example as in Il tempo si è fermato) - so that way both the names are a bit misnomer, but this one is nearer to the right one.

The three (in either case) - are the First Prize winner young man, the second prize winner (the millionaire) and his trusted valet. The reason of his going is his childishness - which had been shown in different way in the two versions (in the Holly version, the bargaining with a young boy - for his stamps) whereas here those were not resorted to. Some "Narrator" statement in the beginning smoothed the field for the Hero to step on.

Both the versions had obvious flaws, but in none of them had been really too noticeable to be irritating. Unfortunately - as it is reported, the German director wasn't even aware that a movie had already been made on the story- so he really couldn't take advantage of the better parts of that. May be had he seen that, or some one makes a hybrid, that would be perfect.

In the Hollywood version, the daughter is a society girl, whereas here she is a professional, the crown princess is in fact ready and capable of taking over the empire from the baby-father. The father in both case is child, but in Holly the daughter too is as frolicky as the father, but here the father is blessed with two mothers - the daughter and the old governess. In fact in Holly version, one could suspect whether there was some other feeling Mrs Kunkel had, in fact almost feel it, but here there is absolutely no doubt.

The second positive part of this version is - the lead up to the excursion - in Holly he has gone by deception, (in fact I couldn't get how they came to know of it). But here, it was known, and they have decided to humour the child to go for a stroll in the park, of course with the guardian (the valet) to keep a strict eye. In fact here I had a strong suspicion, whether the Princess managed the award for her father (playing Santa) ? It seemed quite possible - and that would have taken the chance element off. Upto half way of the movie this was a definitely far superior version, but then a small, but major flaw surfaced. In both the version, the mistaken-millionare was treated as a servant - but Holly had made it convincing - the destruction of cutlery and the pay-back by manual work. Here it was just ordered, without reason. That is simply not palatable. In Holly version, the gold digging divorcee had very quickly changed her target, when she realised who was who. But here she didn't and focused on the wrong one (she didn't get enlightened of the reality). In either case - it was just a bit too fast to be palatable - the change of target would have warned the target in Holly, and the open seduction in this version was more as one would expect from a street-walker than one who hobnobs with Barons and others. This should have been kept a bit more sublime - since after all (though mistakenly), she is trying to catch a rich man as husband. The finale too here was much sweeter than the Holly version. But in Holly the young man couldn't afford to have a mother, hence this solution was out.

As I said, I have a mixed feeling about the superiority - I would give this just a small edge - and that too because, I will take the Director at his words, that he hasn't seen the other one, and hence this isn't a remake, but stand-alone. In remakes, I am much more brutal, when plus points of one version become minus in later one.

A light hearted Heimat comedy

Warning: Spoilers
It looks like a remake of Narren Im Schnee with the original story thrown out and a new story put in. This millionaire, played by Paul Dahlke with his manservant played by Gunther Luders, goes on a ski vacation to Heimat mountains incognito. A young Dr fritz, played by Claus Baederstaht, goes on the same trip to the mountains. He's a struggling Dr.Paul allows his manservant to portray some one important as Claus meets him at the hotel bar, Grand hotel. Then Claus meets Paul and introduces his manservant ,also incognito, with the servant embarrassed about it cause Claus doesn't know the facts. Then Paul meets a little boy ,who's parents are at the hotel. They all fraternize with each other during the vacation. But it's the servant who tries to learn how to ski.It turns out that Paul has the worst room in the hotel. No body knows he's the millionaire. It seems in the story that the kids mother tries to make a pass at Claus ,but, he resist, there's another seductress who tries to make a pass at Claus too. Paul's sister and his daughter ,played by Johanne Heesters daughter ,Nicole, shows up and it seems that clause and her start to fall for each other. He later gets a letter from someone with a check, possibly a book he published or some research. It is later revealed that he's the millionaire. Then they leave . Claus and his mother are invited to Paul place but they don't know he's a millionaire. To his surprise when he discovered not only about Paul but the girl he was in love with is his daughter and that the important man ,he talk to ,was just a butler. There's a scene when Paul buys the small kid some toys and then the kid see's other kids sliding in the ice so he doe it too. Then Paul puts his packages down and tries it too but lands on his behind. Another scene where Claus the servant and Paul gets drunk and goes outside and decide to create a snow man. This is a highly entertaining classic German film worth owning on DVD. 01/28/10 I just discover that this picture was a remake of a 1941 American version of the same story, Paradise for three. This version had Robert Young playing the Clause Peterstaht role and Frank morgen replacing Paul Dahlke.

Overrated Warning: Spoilers
"Drei Männer im Schnee" or "Three Men in the Snow" is an Austrian German-language movie from 1955, so this one had its 60th anniversary last year. The cast, not only the actors who play the title characters, were among the most known and most successful of filmmaking back in the day, even if they may not seem familiar to audiences anymore today. The film runs for 90 minutes and it is still in black-and-white, even if color films already existed almost 20 years earlier in Germany. The director is Kurt Hoffmann who also pretty successful back then, but the most known one we have here is obviously writer Erich Kästner, even if this one is certainly nowhere near his most famous achievements. He is more known for his children's literature. And I can understand why as I did not enjoy the watch too much. It is not a failure and there was an okay moment here and there, but all in all I was not really entertained and it also was not as funny as I hoped it would be. And that is a major problem as the film is really non-existent in all other genres except comedy. The acting is mediocre, not good not bad I would say. As a whole, I think this film is another example of how there were really not many great German-language films from the 1950s. This is nowhere near the best works from that decade. I do not recommend the watch. Thumbs down.
