Sex & Nudity

  • A group of sailors gather excitedly to spy on a women showering in a nearby island hospital (off-screen). An extended stream of comments proceed as the sailors gawk through binoculars. One sailor says: "we can see all of them."
  • A character tries to invite a nurse to his cabin. He prepares a drink and suggestive pillows in hopes of wooing her. Nothing is shown or actually happens, but a good amount of focus surrounds planning the intended seduction.
  • At least one man is implied to spend the night with a woman during shore leave, although nothing is shown or made verbally explicit.
  • During a long-awaited shore liberty, shore patrol bring sailors back. During their report, a whorehouse is referred to euphemistically, and women are reported to have been mawled and had their clothes torn.
  • Sailors are shown wearing white boxer shorts in their quarters. Some are shirtless, too.

  • In addition to smoking and drinking common to films of the era, some men mix ingredients, such as Coke and iodine into a bottle of grain alcohol to make it resemble scotch, intended to fool its potential drinker. During a celebration, men bring in a fire extinguisher which is the dispenser for home-brewed liquor.

  • The death of a shipmate is announced to the crew after mail call and a letter are received.
