Love and the Steelworks: A dramatic love story from the time of the economic miracle in post-war (West) Germany
ZeddaZogenau22 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Martin (Erik SCHUMANN), a rich heir, comes home after successfully completing his studies. His future seems to be pre-programmed: marriage to the snooty childhood friend Rita (Ursula LINGEN) and taking over the family-owned steel mill. But then love comes into play. Martin falls in love with the lovely maid Regine (Johanna MATZ), whose father (Gustav KNUTH) and brother (Horst BUCHHOLZ) work as workers in the steel mill. Not good conditions for a carefree future! After the glamorous wedding, the difficulties for the mismatched couple only begin. The enormous class differences and tragic developments in the steelworks put the happiness of the two lovers to a cruel test...

The film was shot by Harald BRAUN at the original location of the Duisburg-Rheinhausen steelworks. In the heart of the Ruhr area, which was of immense importance for the so-called "Wirtschaftswunder" in West Germany.

These film recordings are now historic, as the steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen was finally shut down in the early 1990s after a bitter and media-effective protest from the entire region.

Definitely worth seeing!
