This film packs quite much in its 77 minutes. Mostly set on East German riverboats (a tugboat and two barges), it gives many nice details on the lifestyle (with a lot of alcoholic beverages consumed), a musical love story (whose attempt at triangle soon has to give up), a continuing implicit discourse on capitalism vs. socialism...

I found it very enjoyable, (n)ostalgic as it feels now. Götz George (of later Schimanski fame) has his first starring role as the young lover Kalle. Besides him, the old folks are best, often speaking with nice Platt German accent.

The Icestorm DVD has German soundtrack only, no subtitles, but otherwise welcome extras: a documentary contrasting the film with real riverboat life 50 years later (I could hardly believe that the travel time from Berlin to Magdeburg shrank from 6..7 days then to 1..1.5 day now), and a few newsreel clips about the composer, and riverboating in old GDR.

Not everybody's cup of tea, but certainly mine :)
