DREADFUL TEAR-JERKER
J. Steed13 August 1999
This is a dreadful tear-jerker with only a few scenes of which can be said that they are succeeded. The film starts well-enough with the opening scene (Hertha Feiler and Gerhardt Riedmann), but the whole thing soon collapses and drags itself until it is finally over. After 1945 Ucicky seems to have lost all interest in making good films and this film is a good example of his disinterest; he may not have liked the material, but did not try to make the most of it either. The cast tries hard, but fights a loosing battle with the already so-so material and Ucicky's direction. Just note the final scene and how (not the content, but the direction) the film ends: I do not think that even the most mediocre director would have afforded himself this drab end.
