Typical German movie from the 1950s

Or I should actually say Austrian because this is an Austrian German-language film from 1957, so over 60 years old now and the wwriter and director here is Ernst Neubach. He was certainly a more prolific writer than director and way into his 50s at that point, this was the film he directed. He also wrote the book this is based on and of course there is music in here he also wrote the lyrics, so definitely a man with many talents. But the acting he left to other people in this film that runs for 1.5 hours exactly pretty much. Oh and it is a color film this needs to be said too looking at the year. Nothing unusual though. These music romance (sometimes Heimat) films from the 1950s from Austria and Germany were usually in color. This os one of the two big genres back then from this part of the world. The other would be films that already dealt with the years of war in Germany from a little over a decade earlier. These were in black-and-white most of the time. But back to this one here. It can be said that the two lovebirds (or the actors who portray them) Damar and Weck are still alive today around the age of 90, to they were in their mid to late 20s when this movie was made. Won't go further into detail about the cast as you can check out the list and their achievements for yourse.f I still want to add that I thought Damar who originates from Luxemburg by the way and I think she is really gorgeous and as I am normally not into blondes this statement means quite something.

As for the story, there is not too much to say. "Wishy-washy" would be a good way to describe it. The romance aspect is usually nothing in these films that feels too nicely done and this one here is not an exception. It was neither touching, nor emotional nor somewhat memorable in a way where you really cheer for the main characters to get together, Probably also because it was really all about the comedy. Sometimes these movies even have at least some minor drama in them that draws you in a bit, but this one here not at all. The actors were tolerable, but not too good either and same is true about the music. Overall, the key is really the comedy aspect here and I must say I did not smile more often than twice or thrice and this is of course not enough for a positive recommendation. Yet it must also be noted that this film is not a failure and in terms of films with romance shown on German television over the holidays you can really make many worse choices if we look at some of the garbage that is shown here in the afternoon at times. But yeah, this does not make this one here a better watch either. Even the costumes and sets did not impress me the way I hoped they would and that is a disappointment because for films playing back several centuries in the past actually, normally this would be a given. So yeah, difficult to find something positive here, but I will try to do so in order to end my review now. I think it is kinda cute sometimes how kissing is frequently handled as something (not so) very sleazy, still in a funny manny, in these films, depending on which characters deal with the subject. Oh boy if they had known about films from the 20th century. Red as a tomato they'd be. That would be all. I give this film a thumbs-down all in all. Some overacting, script not good enough and visually also sub-par. I am not surprised hardly anybody has seen it judging from the number of ratings it has here on imdb. You should skip the watch as well.
