In 1967, musician David Bowie cited this film in a letter to fan Sandra Dodd: "I was watching an old film on TV the other night called "No Down Payment" a great film, but rather depressing if it is a true reflection of The American Way of Life."
Fox President Spyros P. Skouras was furious with production chief Darryl F. Zanuck when " No Down Payment" was banned in Ireland and Sweden, and also had restricted showings in Britain due to its adult nature.
The housing development shown in the film as "Sunrise Hills" is the Marquez Hills neighborhood in Pacific Pallisades, California. In the first half of 2018, the median sales price of a house there was $2.7M. A lot of the houses seen in the film have since been torn down and replaced.
John McPartland, on whose novel this movie is based, died at age 47, less than a year after the movie's opening.
