"Ein Stück vom Himmel" is a German 90-minute movie from 1958 and already almost 58 years old by now already. It's a fairly harmless movie with lots of romance, some decent comedy and a little pint of drama as well. It has quite a few sweet sequences and also made me laugh a couple times. I liked the early quote about gentlemen and Marylin Monroe. The humor may seem a bit odd, but lets not forget when this was made and it is still better than what many romantic comedies are trying to sell us these days, especially these incredibly cheesy German ones.
The film is directed by Rudolf Jugert, actually pretty prolific from the 1950s to 1970s. The male lead character is played by Toni Sailer (looks a bit like famous trumpeter Stefan Mross). When he made this film, he had already retired from skiing. But he won several Olympic gold medals and world championships before. This film was his start into an actually successful acting career that lasted many decades. Georg Thomalla (he would have turned 100 this year) delivers the comedic parts and he does greatly so. lots of talent he has. Needless to say he is not related to Simone. In contrast to Sailer, he was very experienced when this movie was made and had already acted for 20 years roughly. Another strength of this film is that it was actually really easy to keep the characters apart. I sometimes struggle with that, especially in old movies, but it's really no problem here.
The girls in this film are all really good-looking and talented actresses. The (seemingly) final meeting of the two main characters was pretty moving, but also very sweet how they interacted with each other, for example if they were supposed to say "du" or "Sie". And it was kinda sad that he had to leave for another country soon. You could easily feel for the characters, which is probably the most essential thing in romance movies and so many fail in that regard, and I was happy when they got together in the end. Of course, it was very much expected, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
So finally, I recommend watching this film. It's not mind-blowing in any regard, but it's a sweet little comedy and you may even get to see the young Horst Buchholz (before his rise to stardom) if you look closely.
