TIRING HEIMAT COMEDY
J. Steed8 August 1999
A so-so Heimat comedy centered around the two star-twins of the 50's in Germany: the Günther-twins (of "Das doppelte Lottchen" fame) and the gorgeous Kessler Twins. However, the twins do not match as in their late teens the Güthers are dull ladies without any spark, while the Kesslers are fresh and jolly as ever. Alas the Kesslers are hardly given anything to do that is within their (song and dance) line. Together they have a theme song that is sung until not only the twins are tired from it, but the viewer also.

Franz Antel's direction is adequate, but no more than that; he can not be suspected of a real thought-out mise-en-scene and direction. Hans Moser has his usual charm, but cannot save this one. Have plenty of the in this film promoted wine at hand to sit this one out.

Antel's best

Warning: Spoilers
This is certainly the best film the glorious Duo Antel-Nachmann have made. And not only because of the great Hans Moser. Though the film with it's superb Jokes, it's funny songs and the more or less attractive lead actors doesn't look like it, but it is a parable about Fascism and Second World War.

The two twins are forced by the mayor who speaks all the time about "Organisation" to work for the town without any payment. They are not allowed to leave town or to do what they want in there short free time. In the end they have to work from dawn till dusk an have no free time at all. At that point they go on strike and resist the fascist mayor and after a whole lot of action the Americans come and end fascism. But, and that is the finale of the film, the American marries the mayor and so the old forces remain powerful tough they are on the leash of the Americans.
