GRAND JURY – Prison Scandal – 1959

Grand Jury was a series that ran 40 episodes between 1959 and 1960. The series starred Harold J. Stone and Lyle Bettger as two investigators for the State Grand Jury. This is the first episode of the series.

Bruce Gordon is the warden at the State Prison. Gordon is a crook who charges the inmates for easy jobs and early parole. The warden is helped in this by guards, Ken Lynch and Sol Lesser.

When one of the inmates is badly hurt for not paying up, his wife, Mary Webster gives information at a grand jury on Police corruption. Grand Jury investigators Stone and Bettger are sent in undercover. They are given covers as crooked cops who took a 10,000 bride. It is let slip that the bribe was never recovered.

Needless to say, Gordon and his boys hear about the still missing cash. They give the two men a hard time and a heavy work load. They are told they could have light duty for a price. Stone and Bettger play along to get evidence on the Warden's actions.

This idea goes south when the investigators are recognized for what they are. Gordon, Lynch and Lesser decide to kill off the pair to cover their tracks. They plan on locking the two in the meat locker to freeze to death. Then the warden can claim it was an accident.

Stone and Bettger are warned about the plans and get the word out for some help. Gordon, Lynch and Lesser fail in their cover-up attempt and are soon in jail themselves.

Not the best, but by no means the worst crime drama I've seen from the era.
