  [He sobs] 

• Izanagi : Amaterasu, goddess of the sun, rules Tagamagahara with joy, and her brother rules the sea and storms. Why don't you want to work?

  Susanoo : Because I want to go where Mother is!

  Izanagi : You cannot go. Finish your job first.

  Susanoo : You don't understand! You don't love me!

  [He screams and sinks to his knees. He beats the ground, howling] 

  Susanoo : You don't love me! You don't love me!

• Prince Yamato Takeru : Violence doesn't engender understanding.

• Princess Miyazu : You are a good man. I had doubts about you.

  Prince Yamato Takeru : I don't blame you. I am feared everywhere. Everybody hides when I approach. But you have received me with open arms and that makes me very happy. I thank you.

• [Ousu spots Ototachibana praying in the stream] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Oh, Princess Ototachibana!

  [Ototachibana gasps in fright and tries to flee. Ousu, meaning no harm, pursues her. She hides behind a bush but he finds her] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : It's me, Ousu.

  Princess Oto Tachibana : Don't come any closer!

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Why not?

  [He moves in further to explain] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : I couldn't sleep so I came to the river. Not even darkness makes me forget about you. It's a happy encounter. I'm glad I came. It's all right. I wanted to see you before I left! So please...

  [He turns to leave] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Be happy for me and pray for me!

• [Ousu has wounded the Younger Kumaso and is about to finish him off] 

  Younger Kumaso : Wait a moment!

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Are you afraid of death?

  Younger Kumaso : It's not that. Are you Prince Ousu of Yamato?

  Prince Yamato Takeru : That's right. What's it to you?

  Younger Kumaso : Your Highness... you are destined to be a powerful man. Don't waste that fate.

  Prince Yamato Takeru : That's none of your business!

  Younger Kumaso : From here on out... make them call you Prince Yamato Takeru.

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Why? Why Prince Yamato Takeru?

  Younger Kumaso : It means... the bravest... of Yamato. I'd be happy to die at your hand. I have to repay... my brothers' brutality. However... I had hoped to speak to you. I waited for you a few days. After we talked... I would have killed my brother if it was necessary.

  [Ousu's eyes widen in astonishment] 

  Younger Kumaso : I would have done it... if I had to.

  [Ousu rushes forth in pity, surprise and confusion] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Hey, Kumaso!

  Younger Kumaso : I ask you... grant me one last wish... Kill me... now.

  [Ousu sits back. He can't do it. So Kumaso grabs the sword from him and stabs himself. Ousu staggers back in shock] 

• Prince Yamato Takeru : Where are you going, father? Please answer me! Where are you going, father?

• Prince Yamato Takeru : I will go far away from here. To the ends of the Earth, to the Moon, or under the sea! Just anywhere!

  [He doubles over, sobbing] 

  Princess Oto Tachibana : Prince, please don't say such things! Your pain is more painful to me than my death!

  [Yamato Takeru looks over at her] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Ototachibana.

  Princess Oto Tachibana : Yes?

  Prince Yamato Takeru : Do your eyes tell me the truth?

  [Ototachibana shakes her head] 

  Princess Oto Tachibana : I have disobeyed your aunt by coming after you.

  Prince Yamato Takeru : That doesn't matter! I'll never allow you to leave! Stay with me! You are mine!

  [He hugs her tightly] 

  Prince Yamato Takeru : My wife!
