David Farrar: Rick Cobb

Quotes

  • Rick Cobb : Kilts and all that?

Harry Quartermain : Yes, I've got very pretty knees.

  • Rick Cobb : [having a beer with Quartermain]  Ah, beer's the only thing that makes this stinking place bearable.

  • Rick Cobb : [to Quartermain, who is expressing interest in going off in search of the legendary mines of King Solomon, as his father did before him]  You're worse than your father. He pushed his luck, and Africa got him - even him.

  • Rick Cobb : You know, my idea of heaven would be to round up all the mosquitoes in the world and burn them to death - slowly. Real slow!

  • Erica Neuler : [Amtaga has just told something rather amusing to Rick]  What did he say, Rick?

Rick Cobb : It's a Watusi proverb. "Two virgins and one man is only good. But two men and one could destroy all three."

Erica Neuler : He's very wise.

  • Rick Cobb : Look, Erica. I'm pretty beat up, and I haven't got too much hair, and I'm not too young anymore. What I mean to say is, well, I'd like you to marry me.

Erica Neuler : It's difficult to think with so much danger around.

Rick Cobb : Not for me it isn't! Oh, well. I'd have made a lousy husband, anyway.

  • Rick Cobb : Strange things happen in Africa.

  • Rick Cobb : Erica's all right, isn't she?

Harry Quartermain : Yes, she is.

Rick Cobb : I'd like to marry her.

Harry Quartermain : Why don't you ask her?

Rick Cobb : Huh! Haven't the courage. You like her too, don't you?

Harry Quartermain : Yes, I do.

Rick Cobb : That makes it kind of rough, doesn't it?

Harry Quartermain : No, it doesn't. I couldn't marry her.

  • Rick Cobb : I was a friend of your father's.

Harry Quartermain : That's right. I thought he'd told me everything about you.

Rick Cobb : He had. Everything he considered important. It didn't make any difference to him. He judged a man as a man.

Harry Quartermain : He was right. He was so very right

  • Rick Cobb : [Harry and Erica are getting married, and have decided to remain behind in Africa]  Good luck to both of you.

Harry Quartermain : I'm proud to have you as a friend, Rick.

Harry Quartermain : [removes his bayonet, hands it to Rick]  Do me a favor, will you? Take this with you... bury it somewhere in the desert.

Rick Cobb : I'll bury it deep.

Rick Cobb : [turns to Erica]  I'd have made a lousy husband anyway.

Rick Cobb : [turns to leave, then stops at the door]  You know, the drums carry a long distance. I hope one day they'll tell me you have a fine son.

  • Rick Cobb : [Harry has just coldly rebuffed a German hunter who was offering to come along on safari with them]  You know, Harry, we could've used another gun.

Harry Quartermain : Maybe. But we'll handle it ourselves.

Rick Cobb : What's the matter with you? You still fighting the war?

Harry Quartermain : No, four years was quite enough. This is just personal. My mother and sister were drowned in 1916. A U-boat got their ship.

Rick Cobb : A lot of people died unnecessarily.

Harry Quartermain : That's right. But in this case, I had to identify their bodies. My sister was still in mother's arms. She was eight. Just a child. And she had no legs. No legs, just stumps. Mother had her child - half a child - in her arms. I know he had nothing to do with it, but I just don't want any of them around me, that's all.

  • Rick Cobb : Look, Erica, perhaps by tomorrow, we'll have the diamonds.

Erica Neuler : Is it so important to you?

Rick Cobb : Yes and... no. Look, Erica, I'm pretty beat up, and I'm not as young as I used to be. Without the diamonds I'd have to earn my keep as a hunter. If we get the diamonds, why, you'd be wealthy, too. I thought that...

Erica Neuler : You're not "beat up," Rick. You're a wonderful man! You have been so kind to me. You both have.

Rick Cobb : Well, what I meant was, um... will you marry me?

Erica Neuler : Even if we get the diamonds we have a long way back. It's so difficult to think clearly with so much danger around.

Rick Cobb : Not for me it isn't.

Erica Neuler : You and Harry... sometimes I don't know what I see.

Rick Cobb : What do you mean by that, Erica?

Erica Neuler : All my life I've been told what to do. It was so easy then. Now... I don't know how to make a decision.

[turns and walks out, leaving Rick looking a bit disappointed]
