Shirley Temple was a fan favorite in the 1930s to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939), famously losing out to Judy Garland. Whether the producers seriously considered her is debatable, and urban legend has come up with some exaggerated tales about the matter.
Lord General Nikidik takes the place of the book's General Jinjur, as female who was misguided rather than evil. The book briefly mentioned a mad scientist called Dr. Nikidik, who was not called a General nor a Lord, nor was there any indication that he had a butler. The General's role in the conspiracy to kidnap the Princess appears to be based on Lord Kruel from the silent film of The Wizard of Oz (1925).
This is a rare example of a Land of Oz adaptation which reveals the connection between Tip and Ozma at the start. The 1905 stage adaptation The Woggle-Bug did this too.
The Lightning Bug Inspector, who appears briefly while Tip is traveling to the Emerald City, is an allusion to Professor Wogglebug, a significant character in the book.
In the show, the two armies which fight for control of the Emerald City are all male. In the book, they were all female.
