Wenn die Heide Blüht - when the heath was in blossom in the 50's and 60's you could be sure that another film in the Heimatfilm genre (sub genre: Heidefilm - Heath film) would be made in West Germany, whether there was a decent script or not.
Hans Deppe made the classic and proto-typical Heidefilm "Grün ist die Heide" in 1951 and this one can be considered a try to link up with that his first success. The film is average routine and as such not made bad at all (certainly not within its genre), though the story contains all the standard ingredients of the genre and is stale to say the least. The longing for the Heimat this time was thàt strong that the 10 years stay in the U.S.A. of one of the characters is finished off within 5 minutes!
In short: the same boring viewing as usual, and only if you can accept that the real murderer of Klaus kept his mouth shut for 10 years for no reason other than not to cause a premature ending of the film, the story could be more or less acceptable. You might want to have the sound off whenever another folklore song is performed.
