In the first draft of the screenplay by Georg Hurdalek, Frank Tanner (then played by Heinz Drache) was ill during the whole film and being cared about by Isla Harris and Bonwit. This was found to be too complicated to suit the main character of a crime story who has to investigate a murder. When Harald G. Petersson rewrote the script, the idea was scrapped.
This was producer Horst Wendlandt's attempt to produce an Edgar Wallace film entirely in the studio to save costs. The only two outdoor shots were filmed at the back lot of the CCC-Studios in Berlin. The opening shot of the castle was done via matte painting.
Alexandra Stewart was considered for the part of Isla Harris.
Ernst Schröder was considered for the part of Mr. Tilling.
Christiane Nielsen was considered for the part of Mrs. Tilling.
