Silly sex farce; mutilated for American audiences.

DAISY CHAIN is another example of how you can take a sow's ear and make it much worse through tinkering. This star-studded German junker is rendered unwatchable by the typical pornmeister approach of adding American-shot footage and new wraparound material.

But it's not converted into porn -that might have been entertaining. No, it has a disgusting host/narrator Steve Eckardt pretending to be a sexologist, to turn the light farce into a pretend-white coater. The setting is pointlessly shifted to Paris, probably to capitalize on Catherine Deneuve's presence in the cast and an obvious diss to Germanic cinema.

The four segments, with suitably lovely leading ladies, are wildly different in tone, but all of poor quality (admitting of course that they would have played better in German rather than the dubbed version I'm reviewing). Rolf Thiele's segments are unfortunately not as sexy as his porn classic GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES FOR ADULTS, concerning here some very tired bedroom farce involving Curt Jurgens as a philandering orchestra conductor who outwits his wife, played by the classy Nadja Tiller (way too classy to be in this film). Other Thiele effort has Catherine Deneuve pulling a Brigitte Bardot nude-from-the-rear scene as a sleepwalker married to of all people Gert Frobe.

A game Anita Ekberg whose bath runs over, becomes involved with next door neighbor Peter Alexander, a major Austrian star who stinks in this assignment for German helmer Axel von Ambesser, who was banished to directing TV after this clunker. He did a quality film THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK several years earlier, however.

For the American version a 4th segment titled "Dorothea" by Alfred Weidenmann was apparently dropped, and substituted is material from some other film which I haven't been able to identify supposedly directed by Rolf Olsen, featuring (judging from the credits) Blanche Aubrey as Laura, a ditzy blonde cheating on her old husband, with two (count 'em, two) guys hiding out under her bed.

Eckhardt introduces these four segments as case histories and a few brief "Love American Style" bawdy vignettes are tossed in to kill time. It's an indigestible, bad, bad package.
