Max and Helen’s upcoming nuptials will be hit with a Level-5 crisis when an unexpected hurricane strikes New Amsterdam in Tuesday’s season finale (NBC, 10/9c).
“Obviously, no one was planning for this hurricane to hit. It was coming for the Carolinas and then changes directions pretty abruptly,” executive producer David Schulner previews. “So that’s really where everyone finds themselves, having to worry about something that, literally and figuratively, was not on their radar hours before.”

Oscar winner Halle Berry made a special appearance at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards to accept the SeeHer award, a prize that recognizes a woman who pushes boundaries and defies stereotypes. Berry’s career — which spans more than 30 years as an actor, producer and now director — easily fits that bill.
Berry was presented the honor by “Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae, who Berry thanked for her inspiring work. “You have rearranged the way we see ourselves as women of color on television and in the world,” she said at the beginning of her rousing acceptance speech.
As she reflected on her time in entertainment, Berry spoke about her road to star in and direct “Bruised,” a film about a Black woman Mma fighter. Berry recalled the first time she read the script, “I realized that it wasn’t written for someone that looked like me. So I went to the producers and I said,...

Portugal’s cash rebate scheme, introduced in 2018, is attracting major international productions and new production outfits and facilities, and providing significant leverage for domestic film and TV productions.
Shoots slowed during the pandemic, with several projects lensed in bubbles, but production is expected to surge in the second half of 2021.
The current cash rebate is tabbed at 25/30% of eligible production spend and may be upwardly revised in the near future.
€22.5 million ($27.5 million) in total cash rebate has been disbursed since 2018, roughly equally split between international shoots and 100% Portuguese productions and co-productions.
High-profile projects include Ira Sachs’ “Frankie,” with Isabelle Huppert, Richard Stanley’s “The Color Out of Space,” starring Nicolas Cage, Marco Pontecorvo’s “Fatima,” with Harvey Keitel, and three Bollywood pics. These projects have accessed cash rebate per pic varying between €631,000 and €1.9 million ($2.4 million) Portugal is also shaking up its production eco-system. Above: Us poster for Alphaville (Jean-Luc Godard, France, 1965).As the 53rd New York Film Festival ends today, I thought I would go back half a century and take a look at the 3rd edition of the festival. Curated by Amos Vogel and Richard Roud, the then fledgling fest comprised 17 new features, 6 retrospective selections (ranging from Feuillade’s 1915 Les vampires to Godard’s 1960 Le petit soldat), and a number of shorts or demi-features (including Chris Marker’s The Koumiko Mystery). The main slate was chock-full of masterpieces (Gertrud, Alphaville, Charulata) and films by masters (Franju, Visconti, Kurosawa) and young turks on the rise (Straub, Bellocchio, Forman, Penn, Skolimowski). And there is only one film in the list—Laurence L. Kent’s Canadian indie Caressed—that I had never heard of before. In his introduction to the festival catalog Amos Vogel wrote:“Several fascinating, contradictory facts stand out in the 1965 New York film scene.

Beautiful people, in the most beautiful places, suffering the grandest of capital-r Romantic travails: Even if Sandra weren't alive at each moment with its director's genius for composition and staging, and even if its mysteries of sex and blood weren't so alluring and fathomless, this remastered re-release of Luchino Visconti's 1965 lulu of palazzos and incest and heroically strained nightgown straps would already stand as a dessert cart for the cinema-minded. A print this sparkling, actors this gorgeous, chambers this sumptuous, courtyards this shadowed and crumbling — the movie itself could be a dog, and you'd be happy just to let it lick your face for two hours.
Of course, the brilliance of Visconti's storytelling and the daringness of his conception make th...
