CRUDE DÜRRENMATT ADAPTATION
J. Steed5 October 1999
This poor and and crude adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's refined satire makes you wonder whether scriptwriter Georg Laforet (= Franz Seitz) ever read the book or just a synopsis; anyhow, he clearly had no understanding. Rolf Thiele (once a promising director, 1958: Das Mädchen Rosemarie) next had no idea to make the script into an at least watchable film, but maybe he did not understand the material either. On top of all this is Heinz Rühmann whose performance is that of uninspired routine; surely one of his worst films.

There is one moment of special interest. Rudolf Forster (82 years) plays a bit part as butler. That it had to come this far for the great actor; how sad, but he does it gracefully.
