Quotes

  • Supt. Cooper-Smith : There used to be a day when an English bobby could walk up to a tearaway or a murderer, tap him on the shoulder and say, "Are you coming along quietly?" and away they went and now they shoot him in the gut and yet I'm supposed to invent an excuse to go to that convent because they've done it and I know it and I'm going up there!

Dice : I'll come with you, sir.

Supt. Cooper-Smith : No, you won't. You've got your job to think about - I've got a rich aunt.

  • Dice : I still think I should come in with you.

Supt. Cooper-Smith : You stay here. I'm going to do this myself. Keep your men out of sight, hmm.

Dice : Well, look here. Better have that.

    [Chivers hands Cooper-Smith a bobby's whistle]

Dice : You know, I've never used one of these things before.

Dice : It's really very simple, sir. You just put that end in your mouth and blow.

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Miracles of science

    [winks at Chivers]

  • Livia Emberday : Ah, Mr. Cooper-Smith. You can't tear yourself away from our corner of peaceful countryside.

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Yes, it is peaceful here, isn't it? But I'm more interested in people and places - especially missing people.

Livia Emberday : Don't tell me you've lost someone else?

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Yes - careless of me, I'll admit.

  • Supt. Cooper-Smith : I wonder if you've seen anything of a young French girl. She's the receptionist at the White Hart. I had the idea she might have come up here sightseeing today.

Livia Emberday : This is not visiting day.

    Supt. Cooper-Smith : Oh, it isn't? That's strange.

Livia Emberday : Did you find the man you're looking for?

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Yes, I'm afraid we did, but we had to fish for him though - in the Thames.

Livia Emberday : Oh, dear. How depressing it must be to be a policeman.

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Especially if you can't swim.

  • [Chivers enters to kiln room and finds gold bars and dead bodies strewn around the floor]

Dice : What's been going on?

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Oh, please. I've been hit on the head a million times.

  • Supt. Cooper-Smith : Well, Mrs. Enderley, it's a pity you had to kill the most harmless member of your family. He was only a raving lunatic!

  • Dice : Are you all right, sir?

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Yes, I'm fine - as long as nobody... touches... my head.

    Dice : I guess that's it.

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Yes, that's it... My God, I've forgotten Sophie!

  • [last lines]

[after slipping out of the ropes binding her, Sophie grabs a chair and clobbers the first man entering the room where she was held prisoner - Detective Cooper-Smith]

Supt. Cooper-Smith : Sophie, believe me, that's the wrong way to get a new husband.

[Cooper-Smith groans with pain as Sophie helps him walk]

    Supt. Cooper-Smith : Come on.
