TRIES HARD TO BE A JAMES BOND AND SUCCEEDS...SOMEWHAT.
larryanderson23 April 2020
This movie copies just about everything that is in the James Bond blockbuster THUNDERBALL. "Try Hard" is the key phrase here, as our Lead Agente 087, is pressed into service and ordered to stop a madman who is planning to destroy NYC with a powerful rocket. One of the richest men in the world, who travels around on an endless holiday, suddenly decides to start destroying cities with no explanation given. He just wants to do it. 087 leaves Hong Kong and follows the trail to Casablanca, Switzerland (he escapes an avalanche) and whole lot of other places that look like picture post cards. He finally traces his operation to the Canary Islands where he has his missile launching pads. 087 challenges the master criminal in his own hideout only to be captured and chained to the rocket headed to NYC. (James bond didn't get sent up in a rocket until a few movies later in his career). Previously the movie has a "Q" type character who outfits 087 with cuff links that store acid, which he uses to melt his chains. He carries a magnetic bomb in his cigarette pack which he attaches to the Rocket. He also has a Radar-Watch to call the office and a Blow-Torch Pen which he uses to cut open a huge steel door. While in the Alps he uses a Dart loaded ski pole to escape capture. Harold Bradley is one of the thugs who fight with 087 but all the fights are filmed in Fast-Forward and look somewhat silly. I saw this movie for the first time in 2020 and enjoyed it. It has a much better story than most of the other Euro-Spy movies and keeps a steady pace. Recommended.
