A tale of Mexican bandits (or revolutionaries) and one shady, baby-faced gringo

RELEASED IN 1967 (but not till 1968 in the USA) and directed by Damiano Damiani, "A Bullet for the General" (aka "El Chuncho") takes place during the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s and involves a gang of gunrunners led by El Chuncho (Gian Maria Volontè) and enlisted by a revolutionary general (Jaime Fernández). They allow a taciturn American gringo into their band (Lou Castel), oblivious to his objectives. Klaus Kinski plays the semi-crazy priest of the bandits (I mean revolutionaries) while Martine Beswick is on hand as the babe of the bunch.

This is a decent Spaghetti Western focusing on Mexican bandits. The tone is serious and the cast, costumes, dirt and sweat lend to the gritty realism. The opening sequence where a munitions train is forced to stop due to a crucified army captain blocking the tracks is notable. The script respects the intelligence of the viewer and doesn't spell everything else, even while everything is obvious if you read between the lines. Volontè, who plays the filthy, but amicable Mexican protagonist, is best known for his roles with Clint Eastwood in "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964) and "For a Few Dollars More" (1965). The score by Luis Bacalov is quite good and was supervised by the inimitable Ennio Morricone.

THE FILM RUNS 115 minutes and was shot in Almería & Guadix, Spain, with indoor sequences done in Rome. WRITERS: Salvatore Laurani and Franco Solinas.

Excellent Western with two typical Spaghetti actors : Gian Maria Volonte Volonte and Klaus Kinski.

The movie centers a Yankee (Lou Castel) who joins forces with an outlaw band (whose leader is Chuncho well played by Gian Mª Volonte and his hoodlum performed by Klaus Kinski) during the Mexican revolutionary war by time of the President of Mexico Velustiano Carranza , following the overthrow of the Victoriano Huerta's dictatorial regime in the summer of 1914 . The gang allows him to join them to sell weapons to Mexican revolutionaries ignoring he is double-crossing the band , as he is a traitor working for dark forces .

It's a magnificent western film with dazzling shootouts between the protagonists and the contenders . The spotlights of the movie result to be the confrontation on the train and the final duel . There is a special remembrance to Sergio Leone's western , because appearing : Volonte , Kinski and Aldo Sambrell who often played the master's Spaghetti films . This picture belongs to a numerous group in which is set during Mexican revolution , called ¨Zapata Western¨ , such as the Italian films : ¨Compañeros¨ , ¨The mercenary¨ , ¨Tetepa¨ and the American movies : ¨The wild bunch¨ and ¨The professionals¨ . The picture blends crossfire , violence , blood , western action and it's fast movement and that's why it is entertaining enough ; besides , there is a thoughtful dialog with a clever writing in leftist trending by Franco Solinas , screenwriter of a notorious film : ¨The battle of Algiers¨ . Colorful cinematography by Antonio Secchi , shot on location in Almeria (Spain) , as usual , and Cortijo De Frailes, Cabo De Gata , San Jose , and Guadix , Granada, Andalucía . Enjoyable musical score in Spaghetti style by Luis Enrique Bacalov , author of ¨The Postino and Pablo Neruda¨ which won an Oscar for the soundtrack and he composed lots of Spaghetti Western scores .

The motion picture was well directed by Damiano Damiani . Damiani's nice direction is well crafted , here he's mostly cynical and inclined towards violence and too much action especially on its ending part . Damiano is an expert on all kinds of genres as Drama such as ¨Arthur's island¨ , ¨The Most Beautiful Wife" , ¨The witch¨ , ¨Empty canvas¨ based on the Alberto Moravia novel ; Terror as ¨Amytiville 2 : the possession¨ and Historical as ¨The Inquiry¨ . Damiani was specialized on crime-thriller-Subgenre or Italian cop thriller as ¨Confessions of a Police captain¨ , ¨How to kill a judge¨ and ¨The case is closed , forget it¨, and Spaghetti Western as ¨Trinity is back again¨ with Terence Hill and this prestigious ¨A bullet for the General¨ . Rating : Good . Well worth seeing .

Solid, not great

Pretty amusing spag western actually... Gian Maria Volontè is at his absolute best, and Klaus Kinski also does some great character work as a revolutionary religious man who does the Lord's killing for Him. Lou Castel's performance as "Nino" was relatively underwhelming – it's one of those cases where the director apparently thought less is more. I just find the character somewhat one-dimensional and Castel didn't do anything to make it hold up. Martine Beswick gave some good performances in other films I've seen (particularly "Dr. Jeckyll and Sister Hyde") but was nothing special here, just eye- candy with a lot of rogue.

The story is an interesting one, although even without the revealing American title its path might have been fairly predictable. I did think it was interesting that the film gradually shifted our sympathies from the Yankee Nino – who obviously has ulterior motives that we more and more suspect are not motivated by morality – to the initially stereotyped "bandito" El Chucho, played by Volonte. Basically this shift in our sympathies, if it works, represents the film's main political statement. The film plays with our expectations that the white man with a hidden agenda will turn out to be the good guy. I think after he accomplishes his task we're supposed to begin hating him, but I for one found the portrayal of the General to be overly static, as if the director wanted to present him as a kind of god-like figure. So in the end I wouldn't have had a problem with El Chucho going to America with El Nino, which means in some respects the film just did not work for me. I thought Kinski's priest character was twisted and I couldn't get upset about what happened to him either. So while my sympathies definitely shifted towards El Chucho, I didn't buy into the revolution he was supposed to be rejoining and I wish he had simply decided to go off on his own path, with or without El Chucho, instead of returning to that tarnished idealism.

The directing is solid but unexceptional, reaching its peak during the action sequences early in the film. I've heard the film compared to Leone's films or the best of Corbucci's Westerns. Although it bears some comparison to Leone's "Duck, You Sucker" and Corbucci's "The Mercenary", I personally didn't feel the action was quite as intense, nor the characters as interesting as in those films. For one thing, this film really only has one convincing or intriguing character, El Chucho. Kinski's priest "El Santo" is fun to watch but utterly without dimension, and Castel's Nino was neither fun to watch nor interesting. In contrast "The Mercenary" and "Duck, You Sucker" each have at least 2 compelling characters, and the relationship between the American and the Mexican isn't nearly as interesting as what Leone did with the Irishman and the Mexican in his film about the Mexican Revolution.

Still, if you forget about perhaps superior Westerns or superior Spag-westerns that you've seen, and just take the movie on its own merits, it's at least a reasonably entertaining picture and has some interesting surprises if you don't sit and think about it too much while you're watching it.

My favourite non-Sergio Leone spaghetti western.

'A Bullet For The General' is my favourite non-Sergio Leone spaghetti western. It actually has some connection with Leone as it was directed by Damiano Damiani, who Leone later co-directed 'A Genius, Two Friends and an Idiot' with, and stars Gian Maria Volonte who fans will recognize from 'A Fistful Of Dollars' and 'For A Few Dollars More'. On top of that the legendary Klaus Kinski, who was also in 'For A Few Dollars more' (as well as many other spaghetti westerns) plays Volonte's brother. One thing I should point out is that despite Kinski getting second billing, and having his photo alone splashed all over the cover of the video I watched, he's not in the movie all that much, so be warned. Volonte's REAL co-star is Lou Castel, best known to me from his work in 'Orgasmo' and 'Killer Nun'. Castel plays "Gringo" a mysterious American who ingratiates himself into a gang of bandits led by El Chuncho (Volonte) after a train robbery. El Chuncho takes an immediate liking to Gringo and they joins forces, selling weapons to Mexican revolutionaries. Volonte and Castel make a terrific duo, as good as Eastwood and Wallach in 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. Klaus Kinski as I say has little screen time, but is always a pleasure to watch, and plays an unusual role for him, the saintly El Santo. Added to that is the presence of the stunning Martine Beswicke ('One Million Years BC', 'Dr Jekyll And Sister Hyde'), one of the most beautiful actresses of all time. Boy, do I never get tired of looking at her! 'A Bullet For The General' works as exciting entertainment, but the relationship between the two main characters is interesting, and the atmospheric background of the Mexican Revolution (this is two years before 'The Wild Bunch' remember) makes this recommended viewing. Finally, the ending is a killer, and El Chuncho's parting lines are unforgettable. If you've seen Leone's best westerns and 'The Wild Bunch' put 'A Bullet For The General' right at the top of your "to see" list. You won't regret it.

A Klaus Kinski Spaghetti Western

A band of Mexican gun-runners employed by a revolutionary general lure an American mercenary into joining their gang, unaware that he is targeting their general.

Damiano's film has been called a "serious statement about the Mexican Revolution" and has been recognized as an accomplished blend of "tension, action, politics and history". Now, I'm not sure what the "serious statement" is. That Americans would intercede? That bandits could be radicalized? The soundtrack is from some of Italy's best, but the music is unfortunately not that notable. What draws many people to the film is Klaus Kinski, who is great, but the bizarre dubbing makes him seem fake and unable to really provide his presence to the screen.

Good spaghetti Mexican actioner with great Morricone soundtrack

After hearing the Ennio Morricone soundtrack, I knew I wanted to see the film that went with it and I'm glad I did. And if your into spaghetti western soundtracks, then this one is essential to add to your collection. Beautiful Spanish themes and orchestration by Luis Bacalov.

This also goes along the same lines of Leone's DUCK YOU SUCKER (1971) and Sergio Corbucci's COMPANEROS (1970) in that it involves a foreign mercenary who gets involved in the Mexican Revolution of the early 20th century. I like it almost as much as those two films although baby-faced Lou Castel as El Nino the gringo, doesn't make much of an impression as an assassin-for-hire, used by the Mexican government to take out Elias (Jamie Fernandez) and collect 10,000 pesos in gold. He uses a gold bullet and a sniper rifle in order to commit his deed.

In order for El Nino to carry out his mission, he has to hook up with El Cuncho (Gian Maria Volonte) who sells guns to Elias. At least Volonte is fairly animated compared to the wooden Castel. Cuncho's brother, the priest El Santo (Klaus Kinski) and Adelita (Martine Beswick of Hammer horror and 007 fame) are along for the ride.

The action is fairly decent and the film has a great feel for Mexico even though it was filmed in the usual Almeria Spain locations. It moves along at a leisurely pace and even though it has a 2hr. playing time, I didn't feel bored by any of it at all. The only flaw is the ending where El Cuncho kills El Nino as Nino pulls out on a train. He really doesn't give any reason at all for doing this other than he is 'slightly' mad.

The anamorphic widescreen Anchor Bay DVD uses as good a print as expected with light grain showing through from a well-sourced print. No extras beyond an American and European trailer.

A welcome addition to any spaghetti western collection. Recommended.

Enjoyable And Well-Written Political Spaghetti Western With Great Cult Cast

During the Mexican Revolution, Chuncho is a bandit running guns for peasant leader Elias. Whilst robbing an army supply train, Chuncho meets Nino, an unusual American, who wants to join his group and seems to have a great interest in meeting Elias ...

This distinctive Italian western has several great things going for it - a fine cast, a stylish score by Luis Bacalov, lots of exciting action scenes - but its real asset is a terrific story by Salvatore Laurani and Franco Solinas. The scripts for many spaghetti westerns are just simple revenge dramas, but this has real character depth and a powerful political context, forcing the uneducated Chuncho to decide what he really believes in. Is he an outlaw, or a champion of the poor, or simply a mercenary like Nino. He may not be very smart - he's unable to read or even count, and he doesn't realise Nino's real mission when other men would - but in the end he does the right thing for his country and for the revolution. The other characters are equally multi-faceted; El Santo views the fight as a crusade for God's justice, Nino may be a cold killer but he's (mostly) honest, up-front and doesn't double-cross Chuncho when it would be so easy to do so, and Adelita is one of the few powerful and independent women in these movies, who holds her own, fights for herself, and isn't interested in macho bravado. Volonté, Kinski and gorgeous dark-haired British-Jamaican Beswick (check her out also in One Million Years B.C. and Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde) are all terrific but perhaps the real find is Colombian actor Castel as the enigmatic Nino/Tate. With his grey suit, fastidious nature and let's-get-on-with-it attitude he is unlike anybody else and a perfect opposites-attract match for the rip-roaring Chuncho, and it's through him and his callous disregard for the Mexican people and their struggle for identity that the movie really scores. Damiano's direction is solid, and he deserves plaudits for making a lefty art-house picture disguised as a contemporary entertainment. Like so many Italian films of the period, this movie has several titles; the original is Quién Sabe ? (translating in Spanish as "Who knows ?"), but it is perhaps better known by the US title A Bullet For The General, and is also sometimes subtitled El Chucho (meaning mutt/dog in Spanish, which is a perfect description of Volonté's character, despite the missing letter). A stylish, thought-provoking and well-acted western for the discerning cult movie enthusiast.

Excellent Political Spaghetti Western By Damiano Damiani!

Damiano Damiani's masterpiece "El Chuncho Quién Sabe?" aka. "A Bullet For The General" of 1967 is a very political Spaghetti Western set in the Mexican Revolution. A quite brutal tale about ideals, greed, friendship and selfishness, is not only a very entertaining Spaghetti Western, but also a unique study of an idealistic man's struggle between his greed and desire for wealth on the one hand, and his beliefs and ideals on the other hand.

El Chuncho (Gian Maria Volontè) is a bandit and revolutionary with a strong fondness for women, alcohol and cigars. Along with his slightly insane, but religious and very idealistic brother El Santo (Klaus Kinski), he leads a gang of bandits with beliefs, who help the poor and rob the government's army to sell the weapons to the revolutionary army. When the gang is joined by Bill Tate, an American who, due to his youth, is just referred to as "El Nino" by El Chuncho and his fellow Mexican bandidos, the gang leader starts to befriend with the gringo. El Nino, however is basically almost the opposite of El Chuncho, he doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke and he doesn't waste his time with women, and neither does he believe in any causes or ideals, the only thing he is interested in is quick and good money. His friendship to the baby-faced but selfish and cold-blooded Nino, becomes a breaking test for Chuncho, who is torn between his greed and his ideals.

Although Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci are two of my favorite directors of all-time, and their movies "Giù La Testa" ("Duck You Sucker", Leone) and "Il Mercenario" ("The Mercenary", Corbucci), are two awesome movies, and furthermore there are quite a few more excellent Mexican Revolution Spaghetti Westerns , I would name "A Bullet for the General" as my favorite of the Mexican-Revolution-themed Spaghetti Westerns. The acting in this movie is superb. Gian Maria Volontè played in four Spaghetti Westerns and each one of them is a masterpiece. After his excellent performances in "A Fistful Of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars More" and Sergio Sollima's "Faccia A Faccia"/"Face To Face", Volontè is superb as El Chuncho, the most lovable Spaghetti Western character he played. Klaus Kinski is great as always, the character of the rather crazy but idealistic El Santo is quite unusual, since Kinski's roles in Italian Westerns were, with a few exceptions, normally those of extremely cold blooded and selfish killers, who didn't think of anybody but themselves. Lou Castel perfectly fits into the role of baby-faced El Nino, and he manages to point out his character's cleverness and selfishness in a very good way. The directing by Damiano Damiani is brilliant and so is the cinematography. I would have rated this 10/10 if it wasn't for he one minor flaw: The score by Ennio Morricone and Louis Bavalov is good, but it is no quite as great as it could have been as it can't compete with the brilliance of other Morricone scores. Nevertheless, an excellent film!

A brutal, witty and very political Spaghetti Western, "A Bullet For The General" is an excellent film that genre-fans, and film buffs in general should not miss!

Uneven and somewhat unpredictable, above average western...

"A Bullet For the General", exceeded my expectations, and is the best of five DVDs in the "Once Upon a Time in Italy" set. There is no mistaking that this is Gian Maria Volonte's movie. He has way more screen time than in either "A Fistful of Dollars" or "For a Few Dollars More". Klaus Kinski admirers might be disappointed as his screen time is limited in a supporting role. Lou Castel's character seems to barely be breathing in what can only be described as the lowest key performance ever. Martine Bestwick is somewhat livelier, but her appearance is flawed by a Mexican makeup job that can only be described as dreadful. The Ennio Morricone score is above average. Though not quite as good as "The Big Gundown", "A Bullet For the General" must be considered one of the better non-Leone "spaghetti westerns". - MERK

One of the most underrated spaghetti westerns of all time, easily in my top ten. Volanti and Klinski dominate this tale of greed, poverty, racism, rich vs poor, great action sequences and a genuine heart to match, volanti was only behind Eastwood, Van Cleef and Nero as the greatest spaghetti western star of all time! any die hard fan of the genre must have this movie in their collection! pure brilliance!. A great starting point for new fans as it blends all the elements of the genre, violence, redemption and revenge as well as one of the greatest performances from an Italian western actor he was taken from us too soon , long live Gian Marie Volanti!.

Unusual spaghetti western with a political subtext.

An American (Lou Castel) teams up with a Mexican revolutionary (Gian Maria Volonte) to sell arms across Mexico. Watchable spaghetti western with a political and social subtext, which is somewhat unusual for the genre. Unfortunately, the plot isn't always particularly coherent which may be due to the fact that the film is said to exist in several versions (135/117/97/77 minutes!) (I saw the 117 minute version). Castel may be an assassin for the American government whose ultimate job is to kill Volonte. However, this aspect of the film isn't well explored or clear. The film contains plenty of action but virtually no one on one gunfights. The end is surprising and unusual and at the very least it's cool to see Volonte in another fine western (after Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965)). Klaus Kinski also has a role as Volonte's brother.

Above average and over-looked

Damiano Damiani's 1966 film 'A Bullet for the General' is one of the first examples of the Zapata Western, a sub-genre of the Spaghetti Western that mostly dealt with political themes during the Mexican Revolution of the early 20th century. Gian Maria Volontè plays El Chucho, the leader of a Mexican bandit gang who earn their pay selling arms to revolutionaries - he meets with a suave gringo named Bill Tate (played by Lou Castel) who claims to be on the run from the law and soon finds himself inducted into the group and deep in the heart of the Mexican revolution.

Despite the simple sounding premise 'A Bullet for the General' displays a great depth of character as the protagonists relationships shift with the plot before inevitably exchanging roles. The first hour or so seems like a standard western affair with lots of the usual train hi-jacks and bandit raids, but as the characters develop and their relationships become more strained we see some marvellous performances from the suspicious El Chucho, his brother El Santo (a fanatical Christian revolutionary played by Klaus Kinski) and the cool and un-flustered Bill 'Niño' Tate.

The doubt displayed by El Chucho towards Tate really sets up the finale, and as the film nears the heart of the revolution Tate's motives become clear - but that doesn't stop Damiani pulling a nice twist at the end, endearing Volontè's character and providing a juxtaposition to the characters he made famous in some of Sergio Leone's classic Spaghetti Westerns. In a film dealing largely with role-reversal this is particularly apt.

I didn't quite know what to expect from 'A Bullet for the General', I hadn't previously heard of the director and apparently this was his first foray into the Western genre - but I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Providing a good mix of action and politics with commendable performances from Volontè, Kinski and Castel 'A Bullet for the General' is an intriguing and unique example of the Spaghetti Western and well worth your time whether you're a fan of the genre or not.

When nationalism comes first!!!

Who'll start watch this spaghetti picture probably could expect an ordinary one, that have a ton them made,however this has a psychologic approach to explain the final scene,Chuncho played masterfully by Gian Maria Volonté is a rough mexican bandit who has a brutal gang in charge to get weapons around Mexico terrotory to a revolutionary leader,he has a little help from a unknown and quiet young american,shortly raise between them a solid friendship,the final part is fabulous and how it should be faced by the audience,a way that the american to treat the mexicans is a key for such epic final scene!!! A must for everyone!!!

Absolutely horrible and w/o any redeeming qualities

Don't waste your time on this one. Basically there really isn't much of a plot at all so it's just a big bunch of shooting and killing for no readily apparent reason. This film just meanders around and not much of a plot is evident at all, although there is a train robbery at the beginning with the bandits robbing the train to raise funds for a political movement. At the end the main character is killed but it doesn't really matter because this film is so horrible you don't even care and probably won't make it that far anyway. Do not recommend this one at all unless you have insomnia and can't fall asleep...

A bullet for the General

I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of the political spaghettis revolving around the Mexican revolution that came out during the late 60's. It was a trend that coincided with the general left-ist sentiment that prevailed in Italy at that time and gave directors like Sollima and Damiani in this case a perfect opportunity to speak their views. However I'm a sucker for a good spaghetti western.

A Bullet for the General starts out fantastic with a train hold up by the Mexican bandit El Chucho (Gian Maria Volonte). The whole setting and the moral dilemma the captain of the train faces is just right on the money. For the next hour though the movie takes a sudden downturn in quality. There's plenty of shooting action, but it's uninteresting for the most part. We watch El Chucho's gang as they attack different posts to steal arms for a revolutionary general called Elias. There's a running sociopolitical commentary throughout the movie, but what really takes it down a notch is the heavy handed dialogue. The English dubbing is absolutely awful and the translations probably don't do justice to the original material. Some of them are so cringe-worthy that the ideas they're supposed to convey become caricatures.

The good thing is that the second hour is better as it focuses more on character drama and conflict. The last 20 minutes in particular elevate the movie from just OK and are worth the price of admission. The cinematography by Damiani is excellent, the desolate terrain becoming another character in the movie. The performances are solid for the most part, with Volonte stealing every scene he's in as the greasy Mexican bandito with a heart of gold. His change of heart during the end is a joy to behold.

Overall if it weren't for the atrocious dubbing and occasionally silly dialogue, this would be a classic. As far as political spaghettis go, Sollima's Faccia a Faccia is still the undisputed king. In the Mexican revolution-era adventure department, it doesn't top Corbucci's Companeros. However it's still very good as it is, combining bits and pieces from both worlds into an entertaining story. Recommended viewing for fans of the genre.

A bullet to the genitals

Yet another Spaghetti Western full of double crosses, tenuous alliances, and stubbly greasy looking fellows laughing at nothing. This one has Klaus Kinski, and he's kind of doing a Kinski (i.e He's in the film sort of but seems to come and go as he pleases).

During a train robbery where Gian Marie Volonte is obtaining guns from the Mexican Army, he meets a sneaky gringo who wants to join his gang. Being a sucker, Volonte lets him in, and from then on out starts a kind of road trip/bromance with the guy. For the record Klaus is Volonte's brother somehow even though...you know..Kinski looks like a blonde goblin.

After various encounter with the army and the obtaining of a machine gun, things settle down for a game of 'this film is two hours long...get to the point'. Will Volonte favour the green and sell his ammo and guns to the General leading the revolution or will he keep them and defend a town from the army? Will the sneaky guy use the gold bullet he keeps for whatever reason? Will Klaus Kinski actually play himself in the final scene or will it be a body double as I think it is (you may want to check that out).

Spaghetti Westerns are hard to get wrong and this one doesn't fail at all. It's kind of draggy in places and has a very different kind of ending to what you're used to, but then again it is one that you may come away from thinking about. Gian Marie Volonte surely didn't look so filthy in real life, eh?

Lengthy but superior 'spaghetti western'

Chuncho, a Mexican bandit-revolutionary (Gian Maria Volonté) and Bill Taylor, a nattily-attired gringo (Lou Castel), follow a bloody path of violence and betrayal as they transport a load of stolen weapons to General Elias (Jaime Fernández), a prominent revolutionary leader. Volonté is entertaining as the stereotypical Mexican bandito, grizzled, oddly courteous and constantly laughing, Castel is OK although his character never seems more than a cipher, and the always entertaining Klaus Kinski is along for the ride as "El Santo' a murderous friar with an unflagging loyalty to la revolution. The plot moves along well as hints are dropped about Taylor's real reasons for being in Mexico and Chuncho's righteous vs. Mercenary values are put to the test. All the standard 'spaghetti western' tropes are in place but the well-developed plot, attention to detail, and the historical context of the film sets it above the usual pasta-oater and the ending is quite good. Worth watching at a number of levels.

For those who knows who Volontè was.

A movie made in 1967 when I was 8 years old. It pleased my childhood seeing it several times, because Volontè was fascinating. Watched again in 2019, me being 61, I judge it with my mind I got now. The film is no longer as great as in my childhood, despite the music of Bacalov-Morricone and the presence of Kinski (who plays a very special role as a priest throwing grenades in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) and Beswick(which is not such a great beauty). Only Volontè remains fascinating. I never liked Lou Castel.

Well regarded spaghetti western lives up to its reputation

In revolutionary Mexico American John Tate hooks up with a band of outlaws lead by Chuncho. They are "collecting" guns for the revolution. Tate, called Nino by his new friends, tags along as they get guns, free the poor and attempt to get paid for their efforts.

Thats wildly simplified and doesn't do the complexity of this film justice. What is going on in the film is often not apparent until you get to the very end of the movie. No one is who they seem to be and everyone has some sort of other motive for what they are doing. Its a complex film that you have to stay with since you can never be certain what is going on.

For a long stretch of the film I wasn't certain what I thought of it. As I said, this is a story that is ever changing and evolving as it goes, and which you can't say whether you like or not until you get to the very end. It seems like an enjoyable mean but slightly confused western for most of its running time. Our nominal hero, Nino, rapidly evolves into something else. He is always up to something and rarely is it any good. He's hard to root for, or even to like. You instead you have to root for Chuncho, which is a bit odd at first since he's a "bandit" and the "bad guy". By the end you're rooting for Chuncho, while you're still not sure about Nino. In the end though it all comes together, and it reveals itself to be a quite special movie.

This is a movie to see if you like westerns, or even good movies for that matter. Its a film that engages you and moves you and your emotions. Its nice that an entertaining film such as this can also have other things on its mind yet not get lost on those other things or lose the enjoyment factor (there's a good deal of political satire woven into the story).

Definitely recommended.

An important film of Lou Castel, screenplay-writer Franco Solinas and a 'decent' Klaus Kinski

A film co-scripted by Franco Solinas. Solinas ends the film exactly as he ended Pontecorvo's "Queimada" (Burn!). Great performances by Lou Castel (a Colombian-Italian-Swedish actor), Gian Maria Volonte and Klaus Kinski. Kinski plays a decent villain for a change, wearing a cross and a priest's cassock! A film that launched Lou Castel's career. Morricone contributed to the music-credited among the film's credits.

Mexican bandit antics with a difference!!!!!!!

In Damiano Damiani's first stab at the spaghetti western

Gian Maria Volonte (veteran of Sergio Leone films) plays Chuncho, leader of a Mexican Bandit gang who sell arms to the revolutionaries. Lou Castel is a calm, smooth American, who tags along with the bandits, eventually exerting an influence on them. There is also a strong performance by another spaghetti western regular, Klaus Kinski, as a slightly crazed Christian revolutionary. As time goes by the relationships between them change and become more complex, revealing the characters' true colours. Along the way there is plenty of Mexican Bandit action - train holdups, raids on forts, peasant liberation - to keep up the pace of the film.

To be fair, the first hour or so was pretty average - there were a few good moments (such as an attack on a landowner's mansion), but nothing really exceptional. However, as the plot begins to come to a head things really start to pick up, with issues of betrayal, trust and ideology coming to the fore. The final scene really makes an impact, as Chuncho is forced to choose between a wealthy and comfortable future in the states and his loyalty to the revolutionary cause. Needless to say he makes the right choice, and he makes it in style, resulting an ending which manages to be at the same time funny, exciting and emotional.

One of the cleverest things about this film is that in many ways it is a role reversal of the typical spaghetti western. We see the cool, collected Yankee stranger as the villain and the scruffy Mexican bandit as the hero, as far as those concepts exist in the genre. The casting of Volonte here is particularly apt, since in Leone's films he WAS that Mexican bandit villain.

Overall, £Quien Sabe? is well above average, combining action, politics and a good storyline into one excellent movie.

This film is one of the better spaghetti-westerns.

The music of Oscar winner Luis Bacalov is especially impressive.

With this film, director Damiano Damiani confirmed his reputation as a talented filmmaker. In 1963, he won the "Golden Bear" at the Berlin International Film Festival with the film "La rimpatriata (1963)".

In addition to the screenwriters Salvatore Laurani, Franco Solinas, the main actors are also responsible for the quality of this film. Gian Maria Volontè - as El Chuncho Niños, a multi-award winning, well-known Italian actor. Remembered are his title roles in TV series: Caravaggio (1967), Giordano Bruno (1973), but also as the bad guy in the first two cult spaghetti-westerns by the great director Sergio Leone.

Klaus Kinski as El Santo appears a little less on the screen but that was enough to show his acting talent.

Then relatively young Lou Castel (aged 24) as Bill 'Niño' Tate / Bill 'Niño' Taylor convincingly played the character and hinted at his acting talent.

Of the female characters, Martine Beswick stands out as Adelita. Among other roles she is remembered as the partner of the recently deceased, great actor Sean Connery, in 2 James Bond action movies.

Interestingly, director D. Damiani also briefly appears in the film as a journalist but he s not listed.

This above-average western can be viewed multiple times.

watch as political film

I agree with the other viewers how wonderful this film is. However they seem to miss the real point of the film. Made in 1967 during the Vietnam war, this film is really a comment on US policies in the world. It is a classic of the genre of euro intellectual leftist anti imperial US films of the time, beautifully done. Damiano in his films obviously likes and respects Americans, just not the imperial thing.

Regardless of your politics it is important to see this film for what it is really is. For an old lefty like me I kept thinking "where was this film in the early 70's when I was in college". I would have loved it then, as much as I loved seeing it now, almost 30 years after it birth.

With a title that translates as Who Knows?, this was renamed A Bullet for the General when it was released in the U. S. It's the first Italian western to seriously deal with the Mexican revolution, which is credited to screenwriter Franco Solinas, a confirmed Marxist, who shared screenplay duties with Salvatore Laurani. It was directed by Damiano Damiani, who was no stranger to movies with political commentary, except for the movie he's best known for in the U. S., Amityville II: The Possession.

Gian Maria Volonté plays El Chuncho Muños, who is considered the hero - I guess - of this film, who attacks a train and adds American Bill "Niño" Tate (played by Lou Castel with William Berger providing his voice). The foreigner manipulates Chuncho throughout and is present for the deaths of nearly all of his men as well as the death of his brother El Santo (Klaus Kinski, not the masked luchador, but man, Klaus Kinski and Santo in a movie is something I want to see).

It has Martine Beswick in the cast, an actress whose career ranges from Thunderball and Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde to The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood, Trancers II and so much more.

There's also an urban legend that Damiani got so fed up with the hijinks of Gian Maria Volontè and Kinski that he beat them and whipped them on the set until they finally behaved.

The first Zapata western - one that deals with the Mexican revolution - this movie ends with money being thrown and the poor being told to buy dynamite instead of bread. The idealism of revolution is forever co-opted by greed and this movie shoves your face in it and laughs, because even a movie made nearly sixty years ago understands the same issues we're dealing with today, ones that will never go away. Friendship means nothing, ideals mean nothing, only gold. Anyone, everyone will be sold out and left for dead.

SPAGHETTI WESTERN

Some of the same characters infamous from "A Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More", particularly the main baddie of those movies by the name of Gian Maria Volonté. He is one of the 2 stars of this movie, as he plays leader of revolutionary bandits, El Chuncho as he cross paths with an American idealist, Bill "Niño" Tate/Taylor (Lou Castel) who at first appears he is for helping his cause until the revelation toward the end.

I can't see how a single person can be so diabolical with everything working on his favor, with him disregarding other persons involved, except the other main character- ridiculous.
