Hero or villain?

Warning: Spoilers
A descent movie where we meet a boy and a troll, which is one of the classic, Norwegian fairytales. I have watched it several times as a kid, but now as I have watched it as an adult, I have a different perspective on the story.

Ash Lad gets confronted by the troll who claims that the forest is the troll's land, and Ash Lad responds by showing off his "strength". He then joins the troll at the troll's place, and challenges the troll in eating the most porridge.

What I have in mind is when Ash Lad came up with the idea of cutting his own stomach to be able to eat infinite amount of food. The troll is obviously too stupid to understand what Ash Lad was planning, but Ash Lad is still convincing the troll to do so. And as we all know, the troll stabs himself and mostly likely dies. I know the trolls in the fairytales are often the villains, but this time, Ash Lad was the villain here. The troll actually felt a weakness the first moment he met Ash Lad, which I think made him vulnerable. I think he was starting to believe that he was going to be develop a friendship with Ash Lad, and he actually had a little fun with him. Maybe it was leading to one of the best days of the troll's life, but that turned down. The story is getting blinded by Ash Lad's selfishness, and that is what makes the story a tragic story. Many of us are pointing out the wrong villain here.
