Barbara Rush, who won a Golden Globe for most promising newcomer in “It Came From Outer Space” and went on to appear in “Peyton Place” and many other movies and TV shows, died Sunday. Her daughter, Fox News Channel correspondent Claudia Cowan, confirmed her death to Fox News Digital.
“My wonderful mother passed away peacefully at 5:28 this evening. I was with her this morning and know she was waiting for me to return home safely to transition,” Cowan told Fox. “It’s fitting she chose to leave on Easter as it was one of her favorite holidays and now, of course, Easter will have a deeper significance for me and my family.”
Rush appeared in soap operas including “All My Children” and on “7th Heaven,” and appeared in films such as “The Young Philadelphians,” “Robin and the 7 Hoods,” “Hombre” and “The Young Lions.” Her co-stars included Rock Hudson,...

Season 2 of last summer’s hit breakout series “The Bear” is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 22. After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have linked up with celebrated drummer Antonio Sánchez — who helmed the acclaimed percussion-heavy score for Birdman — for a new song, “I Think We’re Past That Now.”
Sánchez’s drumming guides the multi-faceted track, beginning at an off kilter lurch. rising to a monumental arena-rock boom, then settling into an energetic shuffle before one last explosion. Reznor provides lead vocals on the song (and wrote the lyrics), bellowing over Sánchez’s dynamic drums and the song’s bruising blend of industrial synths.

In addition to co-writing the script, Alvarez will also be involved as a producer on the sequel along with Ghost House Pictures' Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.

Spoiler Warning: I’m going discuss last season’s Justified which means I’ll talk a bit on what happened during it. If you intend to binge watch the show and haven’t done so yet, skip the column.
Last week, FX wound up its fifth season of the Elmore Leonard inspired series, Justified. It stars Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens, a supporting character and sometimes star of some of Leonard’s crime novels. You may not know all his books but a fair amount were made into good movies such Hombre, Get Shorty, 3:10 to Yuma, Jackie Brown and, as mentioned, the TV show Justified.
For those who don’t know: Elmore Leonard was noted for his spare style and his way with dialogue as well as his keenly drawn characters. Like Damon Runyon, Leonard liked the seamy side of people and expressed them with unique dialogue.

When Elmore Leonard died this week at 87, he left behind a legacy of not only dozens of great crime and Western novels, but an array of taut and colorful film adaptations, including The Tall T, 3:10 to Yuma, Hombre, Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and Jackie Brown. But one could-have-been classic was never realized: Labrava. The details of the project are scattered to the wind, but we’ve pieced it together as well as we could from various books and periodicals: Nick Dawson’s Being Hal Ashby, Walter Mirisch’s I Thought We Were Making Movies, Not History, Paul Clarence Challen’s Get Dutch, and various articles in the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian, American Film, and Variety. In 1983, Academy Award–winning producer Walter Mirisch — a good friend of Elmore Leonard’s ever since he’d hooked up Charles Bronson with the author's 1974 Mr. Majestyk script — acquired the rights to Leonard’s latest novel,...

According to IMDb, close to 40 films and TV shows have Elmore Leonard’s name attached, some as creator, some as screenwriter, but about three-quarters because they’re based on one of his novels or short stories. Leonard, who died August 20 of complications following a stroke, didn’t like most of them. Actually, that’s something of an understatement. He hated most of them, the distinction being he hated some more than others.
Leonard had a love/hate thing going with Hollywood. He loved taking movie money, but usually hated what Hollywood did with his material. He went public with his revulsion over Burt Reynold’s thoroughly lousy 1985 adaptation of his novel Stick, and while I don’t know this for a fact, I’m sure he was shaking his head – at least at first — when Quentin Tarantino cast Pam Grier in Jackie Brown (1997) to play what had been a white character in his source novel,...

Crime writer known for Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Hombre whose work served as a barometer of modern America
When Elmore Leonard's Stick was published in Britain in 1984, one newspaper called it "a fine first novel". At almost 60, the author would have been amused at such an accolade; it was, in fact, his 21st novel, and Leonard, who has died aged 87, had been selling his fiction regularly, occasionally to Hollywood. But the genres in which he chose to work often failed to attract serious critical attention: westerns first, then crime novels set in the contemporary urban hinterlands.
Westerns as a literary genre still lack respectability, but the craft and energy of Leonard's crime novels, which include Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Labrava, eventually made them impossible to ignore. Still, recognition came late: only in 1992 did the Mystery Writers of America grant him its highest accolade, the Grand Master Edgar.

Elmore Leonard knew how to start a story. My first Leonard novel was Glitz. I opened the paperback on a whim in the college bookstore where I worked as a clerk. It started, "The night Vincent was shot he saw it coming." Forty-five minutes later, my boss poked me in the shoulder and said, "Get back to work." That's how you do it.Leonard died at 87, not long after suffering a stroke. He was spare, direct, and funny. He didn't waste your time or his. "I leave out the parts people skip," he said. Leonard was prolific: 46 books, seven screenplays, two teleplays. He was catnip to TV and film producers looking for material; nearly two dozen of his novels and short stories became movies or shows, including Justified, Get Shorty, Be Cool, 52 Pick-Up (also adapted as The Ambassador), Mr. Majestyk, Hombre, The Tall T, Jackie Brown, 3:10 to...

Elmore Leonard, a towering figure in American crime fiction, has died at 87 after having suffered a stroke earlier this month. Sometimes called the “Dickens of Detroit,” Leonard largely wrote Westerns for the first two decades of his career, which stretched back to 1953′s The Bounty Hunters and included such memorable titles as Hombre, Last Stand at Saber River and Valdez is Coming. He later became known for gritty crime stories rife with snappy, realistic dialogue, many of which were made into films. It was a pair of adaptations in the 1990s, though — 1995′s Get Shorty and Quentin Tarantino’s [...]

Elmore Leonard passed away today at the age of 87. Alongside a vast library of brilliant crime fiction (his first novel The Bounty Hunters was published in 1953), many of Leonard's works were adapted for the big screen.
Digital Spy takes a look at five of the best movies that originated from Leonard's pen.
Jackie Brown (1997)
How do you follow a movie like Pulp Fiction? Quentin Tarantino was always going to find it difficult to replicate the blistering success of his 1994 crime film but time has been kind to Jackie Brown, which ages like a fine wine. It's by far Tarantino's most mature work, and that's thanks in part to using Leonard's novel Rum Punch as the jumping off point. Stars Pam Grier and Robert Forster give career-best performances as a flight attendant and bail bondsman who fall for each other.

For a select group of people, a movie is sold not by its star or its premise but, by simply who directed the film. And like all things that could be quantify by how great they are, there are those who are not as well known as the big named directors of Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. But, that does not mean that these relatively unknown directors are making anything less than those directors. Although not household names, these directors have made careers making great films that deserve more fanfare and for whatever reason did not.

The Western was a movie staple for decades. It seemed the genre that would never die, feeding the fantasies of one generation after another of young boys who galloped around their backyards, playgrounds, and brick streets on broomsticks, banging away with their Mattel cap pistols. Something about a man on a horse set against the boundless wastes of Monument Valley, the crackle of saddle leather, two men facing off in a dusty street under the noon sun connected with the free spirit in every kid.
The American movie – a celluloid telling that was more than a skit – was born in a Western: Edwin S. Porter’s 11- minute The Great Train Robbery (1903).
