Decent and agreeable Spaghetti/Paella/Paté Western co-produced by Italy/Spain/France
ma-cortes18 October 2014
This is a good S.W. plenty of action , shootouts , thrills and fist-play , being inspired by the known novel Miguel Strogoff written by Jules Verne . It's a thrilling western with breathtaking confrontation between the protagonist Giuliano Gemma against the heartless enemies : Dan Vadis , Angel Del Pozo and Jacques Sernas . It concerns about a Confederate militia that constitutes a serious threat to Fort Yuma . Our handsome hero, Gary Diamond (Giuliano Gemma or Montgomery Wood) is imprisoned at a hard Northern prison , he is a highly respected Southern official , then the Union Colonel (Andrea Bosic) assigns him a risked mission , carrying a secret message across dangerous landscapes until Fort Yuma . As the Davis camp Colonel asks him to go and hand over an important letter . Gary Diamond along with Capt. Lefevre (Ángel del Pozo) and a sergeant (Nello Pazzafini) travel across the Old West till Brighton . Meantime , Gary falls in love a beautiful woman named Connie Breastfull (Sophie Daumier) who heads to town to sing at a saloon spectacle . But Gary is captured , he's whip-tortured with his naked torso and put in front of sun , being blinded (similarly to Miguel Strogoff) and having to lose his eyesight in some sequences make a strong impression .

Enjoyable Chorizo-Spaghetti Western co-produced by Spain , Italy and France and follows the American models more than Sergio Leone style . This Western is a superior outing because it displays thrills , emotion , shoot'em up , brawls , intrigue , riding pursuits and many other things . There is plenty of action in the movie , guaranteeing some shots or stunts every few minutes . The picture is a tale of justice and revenge , as a soldier carries out a hard mission when is kidnapped , beaten , tortured and blinded and later on , he seeks vendetta against his torturers . The basic plot is typical spaghetti western fare , but what makes this movie stand out is its style . The starring called Gary Diamond is stunningly played by Giuliano Gemma . Giuliano is very fine , he ravages the screen , he jumps , bounds and leaps , hit and run . Gemma as a brave and two-fisted northerner military is terrific , subsequently the would play similar role in other Spaghettis . Gemma , along with Anthony Steffen and Gianni Garco , results to be one of the greatest stars of the Spaghetti genre . Gemma in his beginning worked as stunt-man , practiced many sports in his life, boxing, gymnastics, such as is well proved at the movie . Then the director, Duccio Tessari, gave him the first role as protagonist in the film " The Titani" and the first spaghetti western films where he often worked under the name of Montgomery Wood , playing Western as ¨A pistol for Ringo¨, ¨The return of Ringo¨ and others as ¨Adios Gringo¨, ¨Arizona Colt¨, ¨The price of power¨ , ¨Day of anger¨ and later ¨California¨. However, his first big opportunity came with the important Italian director, Luchino Visconti in ¨El Gatopardo¨ this was followed by important roles in "Angelica" , ¨Tenebre¨ , ¨Young Lions¨ and ¨The master touch¨. Then he played his most significant roles in ¨Il Deserto Dei Tartari¨ and ¨Il Prefetto Di Ferro¨ .In the movie appears usual support actors as Spanish people : Jose Calvo , Lorenzo Robledo , Antonio Molino Rojo , Pepe Martin , Alfonso Rojas as Italian players as Ettore Manni , Benito Stefanelli , Ricardo Pizzuti , and , of course , Nello Pazzafini . It's a co-production Spanish-Italian and shot on location in Manzanares Del Real , La Pedriza and Colmenar Viejo (Madrid) , Spain . There are many fine technicians and nice assistant direction , excellent production design , and atmospheric cinematography by Rafael Pacheco , he creates a magnificent scenario on the interior ranch and barren outdoors , dirty landscapes under a glimmer sun . Excellent music original by Gianni Ferrio and Ennio Morricone .The musical score of the film included some parts of the score for I malamondo (1964) in order to justify including Ennio Morricone in the score credits of the film. Morricone sued the producer and the dispute was settled in court in 1973. The musicians compose a nice Spaghetti soundtrack and well conducted and splendid leitmotif ; it's full of enjoyable sounds and emotive score , including enjoyable songs at the beginning and the end. The flick was professionally directed by Giorgo Ferroni , an expert on Peplum . As he directed ¨The war of Troy¨ with Steve Reeves ,¨Hercules against Molock¨ and ¨Il Colosso Di Roma¨ with Gordon Scott . He also directed Western as "Fort Yuma Gold" , "Blood for a Silver Dollar" , Wartime as ¨Battle of El Alamein¨ and Terror in acceptable results as ¨ Mill of the stone woman¨ and "Night of the Devils" .

This Western was inspired by the famous and classic novel titled ¨Miguel Strogoff¨ written by Jules Verne . Other Spaghettis freely based on famous novels and plays are the followings : "Long Days of Vengeance" by Florestano Vancini with Giuliano Gemma and Francisco Rabal based upon The count of Montecristo by Alexandre Dumas , ¨The Fury of Johnny Kid¨ based on Shakespeare , being directed by Gianni Puccini with Peter Lee Lawrence and Cristina Galbo from ¨Romeo and Giuletta¨ . Furthermore : ¨Johnny Hamlet¨(1968) by Enzo G Castellari ; ¨The return of Ringo¨ by Duccio Tessari also with Giuliano Gemma and inspired on the ¨Odyssey¨, ¨John Il Bastardo¨(1967) with John Richardson , based on books from Zorrilla and Moliere ; ¨Anche Nel West Céra Una Volta Dio ¨ (1968 )by Marino Girolami based on ¨Island of treasure¨ written by Robert Stevenson and ¨Apocalypse Joe¨ with Anthony Steffen based on Macbeth and Hamlet .

Above average, "American" SW
d_m_maier9 June 2003
Here's a very entertaining film: Unusual (for an SW) story-line, not a revenge, but a "savior" story, loads of familiar faces, good and vehement action, solid acting. The sets are nice, the girl's named "Breastfull" - go and see this one.

FORT YUMA GOLD (Giorgio Ferroni, 1966) **
Bunuel197614 June 2006
An action-packed but unremarkable Spaghetti Western with a Civil War backdrop: it starts off with a confrontation over miserable prison service in the mould of SPARTACUS (1960), features a particularly animated bar-room brawl, and the climax takes place inside an abandoned mine. Lead Giuliano Gemma is in his element, but the villains are comic-book types - and the heroine, though spirited, is monotonous and an absolutely resistible chanteuse! The score is credited to Ennio Morricone and Gianni Ferrio: apparently, the producers borrowed some previously-composed music by the former to justify the use of his name - but he later took them to court over it!!

An Above Average Giuliano Gemma Spaghetti Western
zardoz-138 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Blood for a Silver Dollar" director Giorgio Ferroni's "For A Few Extra Dollars" amounts to an above-average Spaghetti western about a gold heist. Giuliano Gemma stars as a Confederate Army officer who helps the Union Army to prevent the needless massacre of Southern troops who will be wiped out while the real villains steal the gold from under the noses of the Yankees. Strong production values, rugged Spanish scenery, a sturdy cast, and plot with a little mystery to it distinguish this oater that occurs during the American Civil War. Although he fought on the opposite side, our resourceful Confederate hero, Gary Hammond (Giuliano Gemma of "Day of Anger") cuts a bargain the Colonel of Camp Davis (Andrea Bosic) where he is being held prisoner to escort two Union soldiers, Captain Lefevre (Ángel del Pozo of "Horror Express") and Sergeant Pitt (Nello Pazzafini of "A Long Ride from Hell"), through the treacherous sun-baked southwest because he knows the terrain like the back of his hand. The heavily mustached Lefevre is a ruthless Union officer who prefers to shoot first and ask questions later, especially when it involves gunmen who cannot take care of themselves. When Sergeant Pitt refuses to shoot unarmed men, Lefevre displays no qualms about killing. During their trip, they run into a band of outlaws, and Lefevre doesn't trust Hammond with a hoot. Sergeant Pitt is nothing like Lefevre, but he doesn't give Hammand an inch. When Hammond palms Pitt's revolver in an incredible sleight of hand, Pitt surprises him by whipping out a derringer. Eventually, the trio get to a town where Hammond encounters a pretty dance hall warbler, Connie Breastfull (Sophie Daumier of "Love at Sea"), who needs a pass through the territory. Once Connie obtains a pass, Hammond slips the message that the Colonel gave him into Connie's luggage. Meanwhile, Lefevre reveals his villainous interests when he sneaks away from Hammond and Pitt to talk to the chief villain, Riggs (Dan Vadis of "The Gauntlet"), who is the brains behind a gold heist. Riggs has managed to convince the local Confederates that Fort Yuma, where the gold is stored, has a smaller number of cannon. When the rebels attack the fort, Riggs and his men will access a tunnel and steal the gold while the Confederates are pulverized by sixteen artillery pieces.

Giuliano Gemma makes a stalwart hero who knows how to handle a six-gun. He endures the usual tortures that Spaghetti western heroes must face. At one point, when he refuses to divulge the whereabouts of the message that the Colonel entrusted to him, Riggs stakes him out in the sun. Miraculously, Hammond survives this obstacle course. He fools Riggs' henchmen before he wipes them out and tangles with Riggs. Ferroni stages a no-holds-barred saloon brawl with Gemma taking on a lot of henchmen. Dan Vadis is a well-dressed heel and makes a sufficiently rough-edged bad guy. Sophie Daumier supplies sex appeal. Several character actors who appeared in a large number of Spaghetti westerns show up here, including Antonio Molino Rojo, José Calvo, Benito Stefanelli, and Riccardo Pizzuti. Composer Gianni Ferrio contributes a flavorful orchestral score, with Ennio Morricone supplementing the musical soundtrack. "For A Few Extra Dollars" is also known as "Fort Yuma Gold."

Too many screenwriters makes this film feel overstuffed
AlsExGal6 May 2023
In this spaghetti western from director Calvin J. Padget (real name Giorgio Ferroni), Montgomery Wood (real name Giuliano Gemma) stars as Confederate officer Gary Hammond, imprisoned shortly after the end of the Civil War. The Union general in charge of the prison asks Hammond to go on a mission to stop a renegade Confederate general and his band of outlaws from robbed the gold deposits at Fort Yuma. Hammond agrees, but soon discovers that there's more to the story than he was led to believe. Also featuring Sophie Daumier as a character named "Connie Breastfull".

The movie has six credited screenwriters, which was not uncommon on Italian films at the time, but it may explain the overstuffed and piecemeal feel of the story. Wood/Gemma is boring as the hero, but Dan Vadis makes for a good villain, and Sophia Daumier is good as the showgirl love interest. There's a little bit of Ennio Morricone music on the score.

No great shakes, but still a solid example of its genre.
Hey_Sweden22 December 2019
"Fort Yuma Gold" offers some good entertainment for lovers of the Spaghetti Western genre, with another charismatic performance by Giuliano Gemma a.k.a. Montgomery Wood. The story & screenplay (credited to six people!) are set after the Civil War has ended, and concern Gary Hammond (Mr. Gemma), an imprisoned Confederate raider who agrees to a dangerous mission. He must inform the people at Fort Yuma that a raid on their fort - and gold reserve - is being planned. During a subplot, he also briefly accompanies a gorgeous blonde saloon singer named Connie Breastfull (!) (played by Sophie Daumier). Among the villains Gary will face: a physically imposing thug named Riggs (Dan Vadis) and the maniacal Southern major Sanders (Jacques Sernas).

"Fort Yuma Gold" delivers to its audience plenty of two-fisted action (including a major barroom brawl) and gunfire, leading to a fairly memorable finale inside a mine. The story may not be anything special, but it holds' one attention capably enough, with some diversions along the way. (Such as performances by sexy female bit players.) It pretty much paints its characters in "black & white" shades, with no doubt as to who the good guys and bad guys are. And the bad guys are pretty good antagonists for this sort of fare. (If you recognize the studly Vadis, it's because he became a regular player in Clint Eastwood movies of the 1970s and early 1980s.) Angel del Pozo is effective as the weaselly Captain Lefevre; this guy might just as well be twirling his moustache constantly. The handsome Gemma is once again a worthy genre hero, and the stunning Ms. Daumier is appealing as his love interest.

The majestic score is credited to both Gianni Ferrio and the great Ennio Morricone, although the story is that the producers borrowed some Morricone compositions from the film "Malamondo" just so they could put his name in the credits. And later, Morricone took them to court over the matter!

Well acted and well photographed, this shows SW admirers a pretty good time.

Mediocre pasta dish
Wizard-828 September 2014
I sensed that "Fort Yuma Gold" might have a few problems from the opening credits, since SEVEN screenwriters are credited. But I stuck with it to the end, and while this is definitely not the worst spaghetti western I've seen, it is definitely unsatisfying. There are a few good things here and there - the production values are acceptable, there is some nice scenery, there is a very good bar room brawl sequence, and the full name of the lone female character is worth a few chuckles. But for the most part, the movie feels kind of flat. Giuliano Gemma's character often feels like a secondary character instead of a heroic lead. The action apart from that bar room brawl sequence come across as ordinary and not exciting. But I think the biggest problem is that the movie, while not boring, feels really slow and lacking grit or some other effective atmosphere. Too bad, because you can see signs this could have been a knockout spaghetti western had it had more careful direction and writing. It's not awful as it is, but it is definitely disappointing.

Different than the usual quest for gold .......
merklekranz9 April 2021
Giuliano Gemma (Montgomery Wood) in a restrained performance, that quite possibly is his best "Spaghetti Western." The story of a plan to raid a Union Fort by tunneling into the garrison, while it is under attack from the Confederates is terrific. Character development is among the best of any non Leone Italian Western. Technicolor-Techniscope photography yields vivid color saturation, and the Morricone musical score is wonderful. "Fort Yuma Gold". A.k.a. "For a Few Extra Dollars", is flat out an exciting, extremely well plotted, "Spaghetti Western", that is entertaining from the opening credits, till the extremely satisfying conclusion. MERK.

Fort Yuma Gold
coltras356 May 2023
Confederate Major Sanders (Jacques Sernas), continues fighting the North after the conclusion of the American Civil War. Former Rebel Gary Diamond (Giuliano Gemma), now a guide, leads a pair of Union soldiers to obstruct Sanders before he can pull off a raid on Fort Yuma. However the others are unaware that Diamond knows that one of the Union officers is actually Sanders' spy. More complications ensue, pairing Diamond with the aptly named saloon-girl Connie Breastful (Sophie Daumier). Later Diamond is found to be a traitor and is tortured severely before Sanders' plot is foiled.

Giuliano Gemma plays a stalwart hero in a western that has an interesting storyline with enough action to keep spaghetti westerns fans happy, however it never lifts itself above average. The plot can be complicated, thus confusing. There's bizarre scene where Gemma is staked out in the desert so the sun can burn out his eyes; a fishnet-like material is placed over his head with eye holes cut out. Which leads to a protracted sequence where he's pretending to be blind in order to escape and continue on his mission. There's an exciting shootout finale in a mine.

Good Adventure
FightingWesterner31 January 2010
Near the end of the Civil War, imprisoned Confederate raider Giuliano Gemma is sent under guard to warn both his men and the Army at Fort Yuma that an impending rebel raid is really nothing but a ruse by scoundrels from both sides, in cahoots to take the fort's gold for themselves during the chaos. Soon Gemma slips his treacherous escort and attempts to complete the mission himself.

Fort Yuma Gold is well-paced and full of action, with unpredictable plot twists, colorful characters, and one cringe-worthy torture sequence that will have you clutching your eyeballs!

Rough-and-tumble Gemma has quite a winning personality. His charismatic performance goes a long way in helping make this already breezy, likable spaghetti western very satisfying.

The music score, co-written by the great Ennio Morricone, is fantastic and quite reminiscent of the ones he created for A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More.

A very good Spaghetti-Western
luttens16 March 2006
When Giuliano Gemma came to Bulgaria in 1970, on a working trip, he was very surprised to find out that he had already achieved some kind of a "legendary" status among the Bulgarian moviegoers. One of the reasons for that was "Per pochi dollari ancora", which had had its premiere in 1967... The plot of the movie is not typical for the most Spaghetti-Westerns. It is set in the late spring of 1865, immediately after the end of the American Civil war. A young Confederate lieutenant and POW, named Gary Diamond, is asked by the C-in-C of a Federal POW camp to accompany two of his men /capt. Lefevre and sgt. Pitt/ on a special mission - to give the commander of Fort Yuma a warning of an impending attack against it, prepared by the ex-Confederate 5th Colorado rgt., Diamond's ex-unit, commanded by major Sanders. The task is very complicated and tricky, because in the same time major Sanders has a different plan - to sneak in Fort Yuma through the so-called Red Mines, together with the gang of Nelson Riggs, an infamous villain, and steal a great sum of money. Of course Sanders's men of 5th rgt. are doomed - Fort Yuma is very well defended and their purpose is only to divert the attention of the Federal soldiers. Diamond, Lefevre and Pitt begin their dangerous mission and some new elements of the puzzle are added... The film contains a lot of action. There is one particularly good fighting sequence, when Giuliano Gemma shoots dead one of Riggs's henchmen /played superbly by Benito Stefanelli/- the sequence is very short and breath-taking, but is also perfectly executed. The cast is solid - particularly Gemma himself, Sophie Daumiers /as Connie Breastfull, the inevitable faithful and beautiful girl, who falls for Diamond/ and Nello Pazzafini as the tough sgt. Pitt. But the actors, who play the villains, are marvelous - Dan Vadis is memorable as the tough, crude and unmannerly Riggs, who nevertheless possesses certain charm. Many consider the role of major Sanders too small /and even a waste of talents/ for Jacques Sernas, but his cold and aristocratic presence is one of the key features of the movie. And not to forget the unforgettable performance of Angel del Pozo as the sly, treacherous and sarcastic capt. Lefevre. I like very much the march of 5th Colorado rgt towards Fort Yuma - it is indeed impressive and, in my opinion, catches the spirit of the historic time in which the film is set. And I should not forget to mention the wonderful soundtrack, composed by Gianni Ferrio, which is already available on CD. Anyway, this is a very interesting and entertaining western, which must be seen. It is already available on DVD, so there isn't any problem finding it. And it is definitely a must for the numerous fans of Giuliano Gemma!

Spaghetti with a simple but tasty sauce
guisreis3 January 2015
Giuliano Gemma is a Confederate raider freed from a Yankee prison in order to avoid an unnecessary slaughter in Fort Yuma, and he will have the help of a beautiful dancer and a good old man in his dangerous mission. It is not an innovative movie, for sure, as many of the usual clichés are there in this highly conventional spaghetti Western (in reality, it is a co-production Italy-France-Spain) without deepening the characters: saloon brawl, piano-playing, shoot-out inside the mine, torture under the sun, honored Southern soldier... Though, it is an unpretentious nice Western, with good filmmaking, good soundtrack, good action, and even good (although not special) acting. Far from achieving the high quality of Leone's movies, this spaghetti Western with a similar name is still above average, anyway.

This film might be rarely seen, but who cares? there's nothing to see really, some horses, some lousy action, it's a typical low-budget Italian western, I've seen worser thou. Fans of the genre might wanna see this, but just remember to grab a few beer or something else first.
