German Adventure Flick with Ray DANTON and Carl MÖHNER

Mercenary film with Ray Danton and Carl Möhner

Since mercenaries were the focus of war films like "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) in those years, successful producer Luggi Waldleitner (1913-1998) sensed a market niche with his Roxy Film and had this exciting film in German-Spanish-Italian co-production stage.

When there is nothing left to fight in the Congo crisis, two mercenaries (Ray Danton, Carl Möhner) move on to Latin America. There they are supposed to protect the ore transport of a mine owner (Georges Rigaud) through the jungle against bandits. In particular, a mute man in black (Günther Stoll) becomes a bitter adversary. When one of the two mercenaries switches sides, the other finds himself alone against a superior number of villains. Only the striking Maria (Pascale Petit) stays by his side...

So nothing new on the mercenary front! But the film is very exciting and the actors are particularly appealing.

The American actor Ray Danton (1931-1992) had come to the Roman Cinecitta a few years earlier to compete with muscle god Steve Reeves as "Sandokan". He later became a TV director in America, also directing episodes of DALLAS and DYNASTY.

Since his appearance in "Rififi" (1955), Carl Möhner (1921-2005) has appeared alternately in international and German productions.

Günther Stoll (1924-1977) is certainly still remembered as the grumpy detective in the early DERRICK episodes on the German television station ZDF.

Not a big genre masterpiece, but you can definitely watch it!

Expendable and forgettable but...

Warning: Spoilers
I expected to see a sort of MERCENARIES, remember, the Jack Cardiff's masterpiece, starring Rod Taylor and Jim Brown.

Of course, I was disappointed. Directing and shooting are awful. But it's not the worst European productions from this time, the late sixties...The director, Dieter Müller, I have never heard of him. Perhaps he made something else. I don't know. But this movie gives us some good sequences, touching, for instance when the little girl - perhaps the most interesting character of the feature, dies. We don't expect that. And the very ending, between Ray Danton and Pascal Petit, we don't expect that either. These are the only two things that are not predictable in the film. One more thing, the shooting took place in Germany, not in Brazil....

For the rest, nothing to keep in mind in this story of a mercenary who is recruited by a diamond mine owner to protect his property against a bunch of villains. Nothing at all.

So, in resume, if you are careful, you can find some interesting things in this movie. But no more.

One of the best action films made during the 60's

Warning: Spoilers
When I picked this film up I was looking for the flick whit the most tasteless covers. For my total surprise I found out that Die Grosse Treibjagd was actually a really good movie.

The film tells a story about two mercenaries Marco Anderson (Danton) and Steinman (Möhner), who have fought together for a long time and became friends during their travels. Eventually Marco is being hired by the owner of a small mine, who is being pressured to quite by his rival. Marco takes the job only to find out that his bosses rivals have hired his friend into their ranks.

I more than liked the slow pace of action that this movie presented. Even though there is shooting and fistfights in this movie (it's an action movie after all), the action has still been kept on minimum. There is one bigger conflict in the end of the film, but other than that there really isn't much of that fast paced action, what other movies are full of.

The story of the movie is also rather loyal to the mercenary theme. Both Marco and his friend are not being portrayed as an mindless killers, but as an rather humane antiheroes. The films two mercenaries also avoids unnecessary violence and only kill when they have to. In the end of the movie Steinman could easily kill Marco, but he don't do it because there's no reason for it. Marco has already won and there's no point to cause more harm when the battle is over. Their motivation is also purely the money, not an inner agenda. During the course of the story Marco does take some heat about the murder of an little girl, but it still don't make him forget his undermost motive for the task. There are way too many movies about hit mens and mercenaries, which eventually turn into a dull revenge story after a someone innocent is being killed. But luckily Die Grosse Treibjagd isn't one of those films.

What comes to the acting it was surprisingly good. I especially liked Dantons performance which was nicely stiff, but at the same time wasn't overly rock faced. The rest of the cast also makes a good job. The films theme is peaceful and it fits perfectly into the film.

Overall Die Grosse Treibjagd is a good film an it's a shame that it's not know more widely. An excellent gem to everybody, who likes the old 60's movies.
