The first time I saw Alan Arkin onscreen, he scared the hell out of me.
The veteran Academy Award-winning actor, who died Thursday at the age of 89, is best known these days for his wittily avuncular presence in films like Little Miss Sunshine and such television shows as The Kominsky Method, his last great acting role. But my first exposure to him came in middle school, where for some inexplicable reason the powers that be decided that treating the entire student body to a screening of the film Wait Until Dark was a good idea.
In that classic 1967 thriller, Arkin played Harry Roat, the most sadistic member of a trio of villains terrorizing a blind Audrey Hepburn because they think she possesses a doll filled with heroin. In a climactic scene set in almost near-darkness, a seemingly dead Roat suddenly jumps into the frame and grabs Hepburn by the leg.

Update, November 23: NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has announced the recipient of its inaugural NewNarratives grant, a program supported by WarnerMedia’s OneFifty division created to support and develop emerging global storytellers. Filmmaker Jim Vendiola will receive $40,000 for the development of his feature “Argus,” about a disaffected private eye who is hired to reinvestigate the case of a missing teen long thought to have run away. It shifts points of view between the detective, an obsessive killer, and the pre-abduction life of the victim and is described by Nfmla as a “subversive, Bipoc, female-driven reimagining of 1970s Neo-noirs.”
The Chicago-based Vendiola, a first-generation Filipino-American, is a writer, director, and development exec who has thrice been a Newcity Film 50 honoree. He’s also a Nfmla alum

The 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards took place on Sunday, and this year the event truly had a global feel. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show was filmed in various locations across the world, including London and Budapest, Hungary, with performances by Sam Smith, Doja Cat, Zara Larsson, and Little Mix, who also hosted the event.
And while there were some seriously epic performances to keep us entertained whilst in lockdown, of course, the entire reason for the concert is the actual award ceremony. Leading the charge with seven nominations was Lady Gaga, followed closely by Dua Lipa with four and Cardi B with three.
In 2020, a new award was added to the fold to reflect the times we're living in - the best virtual live performance - with BTS, J Balvin, Katy Perry, Little Mix, Maluma, and Post Malone all vying for the prize. Keep reading to find out...

Isabela Merced's music career may be young, but it's already mighty. After making waves a year ago with the release of her first single "Papi"—which would go on to earn over 5 million streams on Spotify with a music video viewed over 12 million times on YouTube—the Peruvian-American actress has taken her time and made sure her subsequent releases lived up to the hype. First came excellent EP the better half of me in May. (Lead-off track "apocalipsis" is a bona fide bop.) And now, she's upped the ante with her new single "Don't Go," a joint effort with Danna Paola, the Mexican singer and star of Netflix's Elite. Co-written with frequent collaborators...

In a move few saw coming, Maluma pulled a page out of Beyoncé's playbook and dropped a surprise album in the wee hours of Friday morning. Titled Papi Juancho, the 22-track project marks the 26-year-old Latin superstar's fifth studio album and brings back the old reggaeton sound that first made me fall in love with him, a departure from the more pop-style music we last heard on 11:11. Produced by The Rude Boyz (who have worked with Maluma since his first album), Papi Juancho is a tribute to his native Colombia and features a handful of collaborations with some of Maluma's idols, including Justin Quiles, Lenny Tavárez, Myke Towers, Yandel, and Zion.
"This album is very special, it represents my essence, what I grew up with, the music I enjoy with my friends and my personal taste in reggaeton music,...

The award-winning queer Dominican author Rita Indiana makes a blazing comeback to the rap game with her latest track, “Como Un Dragón,” the lead single from Mandinga Times, her first new album in 10 years. Set for release in June, the album was produced by her San Juan neighbor Eduardo Cabra, a.k.a. Visitante of Calle 13.
A freakish combo of dembow and hard rock, “Como Un Dragón,” or “Like a Dragon,” sets the scene for Rita’s epic reintroduction. “There is a darkness cloaked in comedy,” the artist explains in a press statement.

Here’s how one pushed the limits of good taste in 1974. James Caan and Alan Arkin run the gamut of racist, raunchy, sexist & homophobic jokes as bad boy cops breaking the rules, and director Richard Rush delivers some impressive, expensive action stunts on location in San Francisco. Does it get a pass because it’s ‘outrageous?’ The public surely thought so. If the star chemistry works the excess won’t matter. With Valerie Harper, Loretta Swit and Jack Kruschen.

Is this a genuine classic? I think so. Sure, it’s the old story of the blind girl in jeopardy, but it’s been worked out so well. Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna and Jack Weston shine in a keen adaptation of Frederick Knott’s play, which could be titled, Dial C for Can’t See Nuthin’.

Cinematographer famed for his action sequences filmed on location
There are fundamentally two types of cinematographers in American mainstream cinema: hired hands who simply point at and shoot what the director tells them to, and those who work closely with the director to make a substantial contribution to the "look" of a movie. On the whole, Andrew Laszlo, who has died aged 85, qualified as the more creative type.
Consequently, Laszlo declared that the peak of his career and his happiest working relationship was as Walter Hill's director of photography on three of the director's best films: The Warriors (1979), Southern Comfort (1981) and Streets of Fire (1984). He was also proud of his work on Rambo: First Blood (1982), probably the most recognisable title in his filmography. Because of the latter, Laszlo gained a reputation as a consummate cinematographer of filmed-on-location action sequences. It was a long way from Laszlo's beginnings in...
