"Kinderarzt (Pediatrician) Dr. Fröhlich" is a West German 90-minute film from 1972, so this one will have its 45th anniversary next year. It has sound and is in color and it's one of the films that made Roy Black the star that he was here in Germany in the 1970s. But there are more known names in the cast here, such as Hansi Kraus, Georg Thomalla and Ralf Wolter from the Winnetou films. And even female lead actress Heidi Hansen was somewhat known back then unlike today. This film is a mix of comedy, drama and music, but the only aspect from these genres that worked somehow was the music. "Schön ist es auf der Welt zu sein" and "Ave Maria" were nice to listen to, but for these it was not enough either to sit through anything else and you can always listen to the songs without watching the film. Acting was so-so, writing was really embarrassing, especially when the film tried to make a dramatic impact. You can't even really blame Black. Sure he wasn't great, but almost nobody could have made the material work here I guess. It's just another example of how the majority of German movies weren't good in the 1970s and if this is what people liked and wanted to see more of back then, then I am pretty happy about our generation's taste in films. I do not recommend the watch.
