The reality of this movie
dvkent21 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I am interested in the comments so far on this film as I was on the crew for the latter part of production. I've said this is a spoiler, but it doesn't really deal with plot.

I hate to break this to those who thought this was a documentary, but it was a staged production. The majority of shooting was done in compounds, some quite large so you don't see the fencing.

Dick Robinson was also the owner of the company that did the actual production, and was brilliant at working with the animals. At the time I worked there we had 175 animals ranging from bears and cougars to jaguars and wolves. We even had a chimp, Wilhemina.

We worked on a compound in the Kanaskis region of Alberta, as well as shooting other films near Canmore, and Utah/Arizona/Mexico.

The animals were treated well, and there were professionals looking after them, including former zoo-keepers. In fact, the animals were often treated better than the crew! Those of us on the film side were expected to walk animals, etc when we weren't working on production.

I have some fantastic memories of this company, but left as work was beginning on 'Grizzly Adams' in 1973. Turns out it was a good thing as Dick got into a major dispute and lawsuit with the financier, Pat Frawley - which ultimately saw the company broken apart.

This one will stick with you for life.
woodchuck_q14 March 2006
I was a child when I saw this movie - and the impression it made was HUGE. It always stuns me that it is not widely available.

It is a little odd to rate the movie, since I have not seen it in at least 30 years...but it must have been something to stick with me this long. It also has a nice theme song - very catchy and moving.

This is an excellent movie for children in grade school, and has, as best I recall, a reasonable conservation message. For any child with an interest in animals, especially wolves, this might be a good choice. As with all movies there is some "natural process" in this, so preview if you are concerned.

I saw a lot of "people-and-animals-meet-and-bond" movies of the era, but none stuck with me like this one.

Was This Comment Useful to You?
dizozza30 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Again, as to usefulness, I'm leaving a comment with decidedly mixed use... I received a 16mm print of this film from an ebay seller, not that I have seen it to the end, but I saw the beginning and can't help but wonder about the mother wolf in this film. Was she really the victim of a random shot from a plane? There's a big "G" rating before the film begins, and then a scene of violence and incomparable loss... Then the cubs do indeed appear separate from their mother as orphans in Mr. Robinson's cabin.... Is this a documentary? What happened to the cubs' mother? Don't tell me she was on the set throughout the production playing the interfering stage mother... oh, maybe she was... dizozza600@cs.com thank you...

UPDATE: I've seen the entire film. It really is an independent film made in Canada, apparently over the course of three years. It will enhance your appreciation of life away from civilization and the balance in nature. We confront breeds of our domestic pets in the wild. Yes, this film is very much worth seeing and discussing.

I have never forgotten this film
pan-1011 July 2000
I saw this movie on television years ago and I have never forgotten it. It was a beautiful story of a man in Alaska and his love for wolves. I remember how "hunters", if you can call them that, flew over in airplanes shooting down the wolves. Unfortunately, this film seems to be unavailable at this time.

Sun Classics
BandSAboutMovies7 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A mountain man named Sam Monroe (Dick Robinson, who also directed this movie*, voiced by Leon Ames) saves four wolf cubs after their mother dies. Somehow, against the odds, they form a pack and protect one another. Thirty other animals appear in this movie, all handled by Robinson.

Written by John C. Champion (Zero Hour!) and John C. Mahon (who produced Chariots of the Gods), you may wonder, "Why would Sam care about this movie, much less write it up for me to read about?"

Because this is a Sun International Picture.

This was four-walled into theaters, taking the kind of movies that they felt the American public wasn't getting - which would be wildlife pictures and the kind of UFO and conspiracy shows that are now on basic cable, but in theaters and drive-ins - and selling it directly to them. Toklat came before this and is incredibly similar, with Robinson tracking a bear that he knew as a cub with Ames doing the voiceover.

Later known as Sunn Classics and Schick/Sunn Classics, the ultimate expression of their outdoorsman against the odds movies would be The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams.

*Robinson also made or worked on the similar movies Birth of a Legend, Cougar Country, Toklat, Mountain Charlie, Buffalo Rider, The Rogue and the Grizzly and did the animal sequences for Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot.

I love this film
alexapegg31 May 2008
A story about an old man who rescues five wolf cubs from their den, when he finds that their mother wolf has been shot and killed by hunters in an aeroplane. I must have only been about 7 or 8 years old, the first time I watched this film, we had a recorded copy of this film from the TV, but I don't know whatever happened to it. This film was amazing and I would love to be able to buy it on DVD. Remember the raccoon family trying to cross the river? or the four wolf cubs learning to catch fish? This film will make you laugh and cry, especially at the end when the four wolf cubs come back to rescue the old man from a grizzly bear. This is without a doubt, a totally wonderful film!

Most beautiful film ever made!
anna-lundin17 November 2007
This is by far the most beautiful film I've ever seen and I have loved it since I was about 4 years old. I've watched it countless times, as has my younger brother. The story about the old man who saves and takes care of 4 little wolves is so touching, and it is beautifully filmed. I also love the title song (unfortunately I don't know who sung it) and the music in general. I wish I could let my children, if I ever have any, see this kind of films instead of today's fast-paced and generally rather stupid children's stories. This film tells about love - love of nature, love of other living beings - in a way that is quiet and subtle, but still finds its way straight into you heart.

I REALLY hope someone decides to re-publish Brother of the Wind - it has so much to give and we need this kind of films, even today!

--------------

ADDITION made May 28 2008: I HAVE IT ON DVD!!!!!!

It's a transfer from a video tape, originally recorded from TV some 15 years back, but considering that the quality is surprisingly good, with steady picture and sound. It's subtitled in Swedish (not removable).

If you're interested, you can contact me on laeriel@telia.com.

Wonderful movie
astrfax13 August 2006
This movie didn't receive the publicity that big name movies receive, but it was a very good movie. It has some fantastic scenery and a good adventure plot line. The nature photography is top notch, and if the movie ever becomes available, I'd recommend anyone to go see it.

This is one movie that should be put on DVD. I suspect that there are a large number of people who would greatly enjoy it, especially families. But the adventure is grasping regardless of how old a person is, so it is great for people of all ages. In some ways, it is similar to "The Bear" in that there isn't a great amount of script. It honestly isn't needed. If anyone has the opportunity to see this movie, go for it!

Brother of the Wind return
refuger13 December 2009
Brother of the Wind has stayed with my mother and me all these years. Since the www has come, it has been at least a once a week entry in our search bar. Finally, I have acquired a 16mm full length movie theater version of it. Can't wait to watch this with my wife and three sons as well as their grandmother. Only if I get copyright release I will offer a few on e-bay or craigslist for price of blank DVD & shipping.

I have e-mailed Sun Classic Pictures explaning about the number of people wanting this movie again but have no response. Maybe if their in box was hit a few thousand times they might release it again. http://sunnclassicpicturesinc.com/Management2.html

I want to buy this movie
davidd-3320 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
My fiancé saw this movie (Brother of the Wind) when it first came out. I want to purchase it for her as a wedding present. Is it available in VHS or DVD? Will it ever be on the tube or in theaters again? We recently watched, "Where the red fern grows" and began discussing other animal movies. If this movie had have been made 30 years earlier, it would have had stars like Gregory Peck. Another movie by the same author was, "My Summer Of Monkeys". One of my favorites was "Iron Will". There are so few quality family movies available. Searching out these kind of movies is sometimes difficult. I spent years researching where to find a copy of "Song of the South". If anyone out there knows of a website to find movies like this, I would appreciate seeing a posting. I'm not sure why this website requires 10 lines on a commentary, but I am trying to comply and I hope they accept this posting. Thanks, David

This was an important film to me
kayla-520 June 1999
After clearing out some boxes of childhood things, I came across a letter I had written my father...it read, "If I don't see 'Brother of the Wind' again I will just die." This movie had a significant impact on me, and I have been searching like mad to find a copy. I was actually amazed it made it to this list. If anyone out there reads this, please help me get this movie onto television, it is an excellent children's movie (it's a live adventure movie about a wolf family and a man) I think Ted Turner would love it, and it deserves to be shown!

Inspirational film
mlmartin30 September 2004
This film set the tone for philosophy and outlook for many of the generation that saw this film. Very inspirational. A movie I'll never forget. If you're looking for a "fluff" movie, or a "no-brainer", this is not the movie for you on this day. However, if you are looking for a movie that will inspire you to think, look at the universe in a different way, and stretch your spirit, this one is definitely right up there.

The music sets your spirit soaring, and the theme song has stayed with me for over 30 years now. On the days I'm feeling seriously tied down or bogged down, I think of this song and I remember to take some time to re-connect with that part of myself.

I would love to see this movie come to DVD or VHS.

Movie should be seen on the big screen
reharrington7 April 2007
I saw "Brother of the Wind" at my childhood theater, the Lincoln, in 1973 when I was 7 years old. It was a fantastic movie and like many of the other writers, I remembered the beautiful theme song through the years. A long time ago, when I was still in my 20s, I videotaped the movie from television. I believe it was playing on WGN out of Chicago (or possibly TBS). Some movies translate better than others from the large screen to the small screen, but to be truly appreciated, I think this movie needs to be seen in a theater with a good sound system. The scenery is magnificent and the music is unforgettable. Immediately, the viewer is drawn into the story when, for some unknown reason, a mother wolf is shot from a low-flying aircraft. What will happen to the cubs? As the story unfolds, we experience the plight of the cubs with them. Families with children will love this film.

extremely well made film
str8fax21 July 2002
This was one of the best movies I've ever seen. The plot line was well defined, and there were enough interactions in the film to capture the viewers attention. It is hard to imagine anyone seeing this movie without being strongly impacted by it. I have also been looking for this film, but have been unable to find it...I'd LOVE to see it again. (This is a very good film for the whole family, and is one of those that will impact a viewer even if this is not the genre that they normally enjoy.)

great movie
mamaprib30 January 2004
I saw this in the theater when it first came out, and I was just a kid. I wish I could find it in video, to show it to my kids. A mushy but wonderful movie...one of those great family films that nobody seems to make anymore.

very much touching story
chriskang-671-91765925 February 2010
I do not remember exactly when I saw the film 'Brother of the Wind'...perhaps in the year of 1973.. or 1974? It was aired on TV by AFKN(American Forces Korea Network)channel. I and my brother who is now a Baptist minister in the States, saw the movie without a single word or move from the beginning to the end of it due to its magnificent scenery of Canadian Rockies and very much touching story. Since then, we have not forgotten the movie and often talked about and tried to find where and how we could get the VHS tape or CD or DVD.. whatever type of it, but failed. I really want to see it again... and would like to experience the beautiful feeling again. Isn't there any possibility for the company having its copyright to release the film again?
