It’s always so jarring and upsetting to learn that someone you have greatly admired has died — no matter how old they are.
Italian writer-director Lina Wertmüller, who passed away last week at age 93, was one of those industry icons whom I had hoped to one day reconnect with. I had the honor of first meeting her two years ago when she was in Los Angeles at a luncheon given in her honor by Women in Film. I remember at the time being struck by how healthy and vibrant Wertmüller still was for her age — a dynamo packed into a petite frame with her trademark white plastic glasses and striking white hair.
I wrote about our encounter in my Oct. 29, 2019, editor’s letter, recounting how I talked with her about what a significant place she held in the annals of movie history as a revolutionary, provocative filmmaker and the first...

After working as an assistant director for Federico Fellini on 8 1/2, Wertmüller went on to become a prolific and distinctive filmmaker in her own right, combining politics and sex and humor in films like The Seduction of Mimi and Swept Away. In an interview with Criterion, she stated: "I consider myself a director, not a female director. I think there’s no difference. The difference is between good movies and bad movies. We should not make other distinctions." The prolific critic and theorist bell hooks has died today. In addition to her many writings on the feminist movement and cultural politics, hooks was also an important media theorist.

Lina Wertmüller, the legendary Italian filmmaker and the first woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, has died at the age of 93. According to Italian press (via Variety), the writer and director died “peacefully at home, next to her daughter and loved ones.” Wertmüller’s career jump-started in 1963 when she directed her feature directorial debut “The Basilisk” and served as an assistant director on Federico Fellini’s “8½.” The director went on to helm acclaimed films such as “Seven Beauties,” “Swept Away,” and “The Seduction of Mimi.” For her work on “Seven Beauties,” she became the first woman Oscar nominee for Best Director. The drama was also Oscar nominated for Best Original Screenplay and earned Wertmüller a nomination at the Directors Guild of America Awards.

Lina Wertmüller, the first woman to score a Best Director nomination at the Academy Awards, died on Thursday in Italy. She was 93.
Wertmüller’s death was reported in the Italian press. According to a friend, the writer and director died “peacefully at home, next to her daughter and loved ones.”
Born in Rome, Wertmüller claimed she was expelled from dozens of Catholic schools as a child and developed an early love of comic books (especially “Flash Gordon”) and Soviet theater. Through friends, she was introduced to legendary film director Federico Fellini who quickly became her mentor.
Fellini hired Wertmüller as an assistant director on “8½” in 1963, the same year in which she made her directorial feature debut with “The Basilisks,” which went on to win her her first award for Best Director at the Locarno film festival.

We’ve just hit November, and that means a whole new month of material for Netflix subscribers. The platform is adding a lot of content for this period, including the latest instalment of The Crown, and several of its Christmas titles ahead of the festive season. Focusing on this week, though, what movies and series are Netflix putting out to keep us busy?
Well, first up on November 2nd is the 2018 science fiction film Prospect, which sees Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher as a father and daughter team who travel to a moon to mine for rare gems, but soon encounter bigger problems. Prospect was the feature-length directorial debut of Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, and enjoyed a limited release and some decent critical responses.

November is among the least respected months on the calendar. Falling between objectively the two best holidays, November is usually all about recovering from the spookies of Halloween while getting ready for the good vibes the holiday season. For its new releases of November 2020, Netflix has decided to just go ahead and get Christmas over with.
Netflix has already released a list of all its holiday offerings for November and December, and it’s those holiday offerings that take the most prominence this month. The biggest project of all of these is undoubtedly The Christmas Chronicles 2, which premieres on Nov. 25. In this holiday sequel, Kurt Russell reprises his role as Hot Santa Claus who must save the season once again.
On the non-holiday side of things, Netflix’s Emmy-winning series The Crown returns for season 4 on Nov. 15. And speaking of things that desperately want to win awards, Ron Howard...

Premiering out of competition at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival just two months after he died from a stroke, Luchino Visconti’s final masterpiece, The Innocent remains one of the Italian auteur’s most neglected titles.
Starring Giancarlo Giannini, who was proliferating most of Lina Wertmuller’s titles of the period, in between a Cannes Best Actor win for Love and Anarchy and his Academy Award nomination for Seven Beauties, it would seem Visconti hadn’t exactly nabbed his first choice for any of the three leads in his last film, which is based on an 1892 novel by Gabrielle D’Annunzio, focusing on adultery, misogyny and the omnipresent gendered double standards in late-nineteenth century Italy.…...

With multiple coronavirus safety guidelines now published, most countries are taking tentative steps to restart film and TV drama production. In the Nordics, however, production has been up and running for weeks — and the lessons learned there could prove invaluable for those thinking of restarting elsewhere.
One of the key learnings is that, with good planning, it’s not as difficult or expensive to produce in the Covid-19 era as it might first appear.
“It’s one step at a time,” says Kelly Luegenbiehl, VP of international originals at Netflix, which has productions currently shooting in Iceland, Sweden and Denmark. “These are big challenges we’re trying to solve. If you try to think about the whole problem, it can be a little intimidating.”

Exclusive: Netflix is drawing up plans to get its UK shows back into production amid the coronavirus pandemic, and the streamer has a hopeful target of August for its hit drama Sex Education.
Deadline has spoken to a number of sources on the Eleven show, and they say that August is the current ambition for Season 3, but nothing is cast in stone as the situation with Covid-19 is developing quickly.
August is seen as the latest Sex Education could go into production this year because the show is reliant on filming during the longer days of British summer, and the sunshine is an important part of its on-screen gloss. It means Netflix and Eleven will need to make a final decision on the shoot plans next month, given the show requires 10 weeks of prep time.

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos offered a road map to the rest of Hollywood for how to safely go back to work while the coronavirus is still raging around the globe.
“While we will need to change this process — in some cases dramatically — to ensure the safety of cast and crew during this pandemic, the closed nature of sets also offers some advantages,” Sarandos wrote Monday in an op-ed published in the Los Angeles Times. “Not least that they provide a relatively controlled environment, where we can track who comes and goes.”
While all other Hollywood studios have been shuttered for almost two months, Netflix has slowly begun to resume some of its international productions in South Korea, Iceland and Japan. The streaming company plans to pick up filming again in Sweden this month and Norway in July.

Netflix has placed an order for “Vinterviken 2021,” a contemporary adaptation of the acclaimed 1993 Mats Wohl novel, “Vinterviken,” the U.S. streaming giant announced Thursday.
In a coup for Endemol Shine’s Emea scripted division, “Vinterviken 2021” will be produced by Filmlance International, part of the Endemol Shine Group and producer of the original “The Bridge” (“Bron”/”Broen”), a milestone in Nordic Noir, as well as “Caliphate,” which earlier this year broke audience records on Swedish public broadcaster Svt’s VOD catch-up service Svt Play.
The original novel inspired a high-profile movie of the same title. The inclusion of the year in the new movie’s title looks like a declaration of intentions. A high school romantic drama, “Vinterviken 2021” plumbs social inequalities and prejudice which have only grown in the 25 years since the novel, doing so through a teen love story between Elisabeth and John-John where the audience discover, along with its...

While most of the world is on lockdown mode, Sweden has taken a different route, with schools, restaurants, some theaters and most public venues still open.
The Swedish prime minister, Stefan Löfven, has asked people to behave like “adults” and not give in to the panic, advising them to work from home, as well as banning gatherings of more than 50 people. But Löfven has not imposed drastic restrictions in Sweden as in other countries in Europe, such as its Nordic neighbors in Finland and Denmark, or France, Italy, Spain, and more recently the U.K.
Many movie theaters in Sweden are closed but some have remained open, notably theaters run by Svenska Bio, Sweden’s second biggest cinema chain, which also operates in Finland and Denmark.
Peter Fornstam, the CEO of Svenska Bio, said the group has kept theaters open in Sweden but with super low attendance and a cap of 50 admissions per auditorium.

Ask Lina Wertmüller if she’s pleased to be honored by Hollywood, and here’s the typical response you get from the groundbreaking director, who at 91 is still out to shock: “I certainly am. It beats a kick in the balls!”
Wertmüller, in 1976, became the first female director to receive an Academy Award nomination for helming grotesque Holocaust drama “Seven Beauties,” which received four nominations, including original screenplay for her, foreign-language film and lead actor Giancarlo Giannini. She will be celebrated on Oct. 27 with an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards ceremony, followed the next day by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Genoma Films, which funded the restoration of her Oscar winning “Seven Beauties,” and Sardinia Film Commission are spearheading a retrospective of her films at the American Cinematheque on Oct. 20 and 25.

Lina Wertmüller's films always feature great faces. They're not classically beautiful, but rather interesting to look at, like the visages sculpted by shadow in Caravaggio's paintings. Contrastingly, Mariangela Melato is a spectacle of powdered pallor, a vampiric Jean Harlow or perhaps a tarted-up marble statue, gorgeous and obscene in equal measure...

Netflix has ordered a new Swedish original from Flx, the producers behind “Quicksand.” Romantic dramedy “Love & Anarchy” is the first TV series created by filmmaker by Lisa Langseth.
The commission marks Netflix’s second time working with the Sf Studios-owned Flx, which produced crime drama “Quicksand.” “Quicksand,” which debuted on Netflix in April, was the first Swedish original series made for the streaming giant.
“Love & Anarchy” tells the story of a career-driven consultant, and married mother of two, who meets a young It tech on a job. The pair flirt and secretly challenge each other to do things that question modern day life, but what starts innocently soon becomes more daring with growing consequences.
The eight-part series was created by Langseth (pictured) who also serves as head writer alongside Alex Haridi. Haridi also worked on “Quicksand.” Langseth made her feature debut with 2010’s “Pure,” starring Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander,...

Versatile Italian actor known for her roles in Lina Wertmüller's films
Mariangela Melato, who has died of pancreatic cancer aged 71, was one of Italy's most versatile and vivacious actresses, working in theatre and cinema with some of the leading directors of her time. She won international cult status for three films directed by Lina Wertmüller in which she co-starred with Giancarlo Giannini: The Seduction of Mimi (1972), Love and Anarchy (1973) and Swept Away (1974), in all of which the controversial Wertmüller mixed sex and politics. Melato had no qualms about submitting with great good humour to the sometimes humiliating situations and explicit dialogue inflicted on the two stars.
Those Wertmüller films made Melato well-known, but she liked to be recognised as an actor rather than a star. Born in Milan, she trained at the city's Brera Academy. One of the first companies to sign her up was that of the...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Prometheus" What's It About? Ridley Scott returns to the world of "Alien" with an epic prequel about mankind's first contact with a mysterious alien race who may or may not be our makers, and may or may not have sinister purposes. Lawrence-sized dreams of exploration. Watch Noomi Rapace's Screen Test for "Prometheus" - (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video | Netflix) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" What's It About?...
