On Oscar night, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” will almost certainly win the Academy Award for feature animation. For many of those following along at home, it will look as though the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water” is being rewarded for some kind of secondary passion, as if del Toro had scaled Everest and then set his sights on a smaller peak on which to plant his flag. But that’s not how it happened at all.
Way back in Mexico, del Toro started his filmmaking career doing animated shorts: Obsessed with Ray Harryhausen, the amateur future auteur built rudimentary armatures, painstakingly repositioning the puppets one frame at a time. Decades later, once established in Hollywood, del Toro accepted a side gig at DreamWorks Animation, serving as a story consultant on films such as “Megamind” and “Kung Fu Panda 2” as a pretext for teaching himself the trade.

Paul Thomas Anderson grew up in the San Fernando Valley, which played an important role in his 1997 breakthrough film “Boogie Nights,” which looked at Valley’s porn industry during the ‘70s and 80s. In his new United Artists release “Licorice Pizza,” Anderson returns to the Sfv for a nostalgia-tinged comedy-of-age story set in 1973 starring Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim. Both young performers received strong notices with the L.A. Times’ Justin Chang declaring Haim as the true star of “this boisterous, bighearted movie and its raison d’être.” And Bradley Cooper has earned positive notices for his funny turn as hairdresser turned film producer Jon Peters, who ironically was a producer on Cooper’s 2018 “A Star is Born.”
So, what was the world like in 1973? It was the year of Watergate, Roe Vs. Wade and “The Exorcist” hitting the big screen. Let’s travel back almost half a century to look at the top films,...

To fully understand and appreciate the place of importance that Ha Gil-jong’s “The March of Fools” holds in the history of Korean cinema, one needs to understand the tumultuous journey the film had. From the first draft of the script, written by celebrated and oft-adapted novelist Choi In-ho from his namesake novel, to the multiple revised resubmissions of the script, from notifications received while shooting to the submitted first trailer and even the final print, the film was hounded by the strict censorship at the time, which set to completely change the writing of Choi In-ho and the vision of Ha Gil-jong by removing anything that showed the Korea of the time in a bad light. So what was it about the film that had the censors so vexed?

Justin Bieber posed for photographs for the Miami Beach Police Department after his Jan. 23 arrest so that they could capture his numerous tattoos. Now, the Mbpd have released the pictures to the public and promise to release a few videos after Bieber’s privates are censored out of them.
Justin Bieber Tattoo Photos
In keeping with their standard record-keeping of criminals, the Miami Beach Police Department catalogued Bieber’s ink with a series of photographs. Prominently on display in the series of snaps, are his back tattoos – a Native American chief and quote from Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Bieber also lifted up his shirt to show his small bird tattoo – his first – that’s a reference to the “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” fable. His “believe,” “love,” “forgive,” crown and joker tattoos are visible as well.

After a blustery day behind the scenes of Alpha Papa, the question remains: where does Steve Coogan end and his most famous creation begin?
A freezing winter day in Cromer and it is impossible to tell where reality stops and Alan Partridge's world starts. "The best smiles for miles," says an advert for Cromer pier. "If hearty fun is good for the ticker," suggests another, GPs should prescribe "a strong dose of Cromer's seaside special". These Partridge-esque pronouncements are real but the pier shooting gallery and Susan Boyle poster are not. Two of a phalanx of police officers who have sealed off the pier from the public are genuine but most are actors watching the denouement of the long-awaited Alan Partridge movie.
The sheepskin gloves Steve Coogan is wearing when we shake hands must be Alan's? "They are actually mine," says Coogan, a little defensively, "but there is an overlap.

In his novel "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah," author Richard Bach (best known for "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"), writes, "If you will practice being fictional for a while, you will understand that fictional characters are sometimes more real than people with bodies and heartbeats."
That idea is taken to an extreme in the drama "Cult," premiering Tuesday, Feb. 19, on The CW.
The idea of a story within a story is not new, but in "Cult," there's the "fictional" world, the "real" world and a world that lies somewhere between the two.
When the events and characters of a tale enter the mind of a reader, listener or viewer, they blend with the memories, attitudes and personality already there, creating a version of the story that exists for that person alone.
But some stories, for whatever reason, have a strong influence on many minds. While it's usually benign, there's always...

He was flying to visit a friend on the San Juan Islands, but during landing, his plane hit a power line and crashed. James Bach told the Associated Press that his father was lucid and responsive. Virtuoso violinist heard on a string of classic Hollywood movie scores
The American violinist Israel Baker, who has died aged 92, was renowned among his fellow musicians but unknown to most of the millions who heard him play on the soundtracks of such movies as Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 shocker Psycho, where he led Bernard Herrmann's screaming violin effects accompanying the stabbing of Janet Leigh in the shower scene.
Baker belonged to a select group of musicians who could fit into any situation at a moment's notice and read any piece on sight. But while making a lavish living in the Hollywood film and recording studios, he also had a considerable concert career.
He was born in Chicago, the youngest of four children of Russian immigrants. At six he appeared on national radio, and from his late teens he played in orchestras. At 22 he was concertmaster of Leopold Stokowski's All-American...

Miley Cyrus might have sullied her squeaky-clean image (again!) by performing an impromptu lap dance, but Justin Bieber isn't too far behind.
Yep: The dream boy of every tween has gone and gotten himself inked. According to reports, Bieber, 16, got the tattoo because of his love of Richard Bach's famous book, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull." This teen-idol tat is bad news for parents dealing with their kids' unabated Bieber-mania. The Bieb's latest move could start a new trend of underage tattooing ... or a rush on "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" books.
Even though he had his dad's consent, isn't baby Bieber a little young to get a real (not rub-on!) tat? What do you think?...

Earlier in the week, some news and images surfaced that told us that Justin Bieber had gotten a tattoo. As a part of his 16th birthday celebration at the beginning of March, Bieber went to Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop in Toronto with his dad in tow to get an impression of Jonathan Livingston Seagull (a tattoo also possessed by Bieber's dad and his uncle) on his hip. On Tuesday (May 18), MTV News caught up with Son of a Gun co-owner Brian Byrne, who laid out the narrative of the event. It's a great story that inspired us to graft other celebrity tattoos on him.
But the name "Brian Byrne" stuck out and seemed awfully familiar. Then it became clear: Byrne is a rock star himself, having fronted Canadian psychedelic rockers I Mother Earth around the turn of the century. The band first formed in 1991 and had several major hits in Canada,...

Not even tough tattoo artists are immune to Justin Bieber's charms. Brian Byrne, the co-owner of the Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop where the pop phenom got inked back in March, said the Biebs is just as dreamy in person as any screaming fan would expect.
"He's kind of hard to miss. He's pretty cute," Byrne told MTV News. "He's, like, super cute, actually. That hair, that smile, those clothes, those major-high high-tops," Byrne joked.
Byrne also revealed at that the star's Jonathan Livingston Seagull tattoo has special meaning for Bieber. "From what I can gather, I guess a bunch of people in his family actually have that same tattoo, his dad included," Byrne said. Bieber's...

Hollywoodnews.com: There are various rites of manhood.
Some fathers like to take their sons for a spin at the brothel. Other fathers share a beer with them, while a whole other subset take their male spawn to the shooting range.
Jeremy Bieber, father of Justin, took his pop singer son to get a tattoo when he clocked 16 back in March, outside the U.S. of course. Recent photos surfaced on the internet of Bieber receiving a tattoo according to MTV news – and it’s on his hip (of all the crazy sensitive places to get one. Oi vey)
All of this makes Hollywood News wonder whether Bieber flexes his tattoo as part of his mating call to the ladies, i.e. Kendall Kardashian.
MTV got down and dirty and literally got Brian Byrne, co-owner of Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop in Toronto where Bieber was bronzed, on...

Following a newly-leaked photo showing Justin Bieber got his hip inked with a small bird, Brian Byrne, co-owner of Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop in Toronto, where Bieber got his new tattoo, addressed the story to MTV News via phone on Tuesday, May 18. "It was back in March, March 4th or 5th," Byrne revealed.
"The guy who tattooed him, Charlie, is a lifelong friend of Jeremy's, Justin's dad - they're all from Stratford," the Gun Tattoo and Barbershop's co-owner added. "When it came up, he called Charlie and asked if he could do it and keep it quiet. We made sure the shop was empty and there was nobody around."
On reports mentioning Beiber got the tattoo shortly after his 16th birthday in March, Byrne later confirmed, "It was a 16th birthday tattoo. I guess his dad has it, and one of his uncles. It's the outline of...

We begin the journey with one of Lee's earliest released scores, East of Eden (1981), a mini-series based on John Steinbeck's novel starring Jane Seymour. Up to that point Holdridge was already getting estabilished in film and television scoring, but East of Eden was the first work that got him noticed among film music collectors. A soundtrack LP was released by Elektra and for a long time a suite appearing on Charles Gerhardt Conducts The Film Music of Lee Holdridge was the only CD release of the score. Now the full Holdridge score is available from Intrada, who put out a special disc that begins with the album program in stereo, than culling together the remaining music from surviving elements, several previously unused cues are presented in mono. Here's Lee's thoughts about the picture and the rocky road to getting a commission of this magnitude:
I read many of John Steinbeck's novels growing up.
