Fritz Wepper, a German actor with a prolific TV career in his native country but known to American audiences for his funny and heartfelt performance as a German Jew is Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning 1972 hit musical Cabaret, died Monday at a hospice facility in Munich. He was 82.
His death was announced by wife Susanne Kellermann to German newspaper Bild. Kellerman said Wepper passed away peacefully following a long illness.
A familiar presence in Germany from his role as the crime-solving Detective Sergeant Harry Klein in the long-running series Derrick (1974-98), Wepper made a lasting impression on international audiences with his performance as the charming, if insecure, aspiring gigolo Fritz Wendel of Cabaret.
In the film starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, Wepper’s Fritz befriended Minnelli’s Sally Bowles and York’s Brian Roberts, while longing for the beautiful and wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson). Secretly Jewish himself,...

Fritz Wepper, the German actor who portrayed the German Jew Fritz Wendel in Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning musical masterpiece Cabaret and starred in his home country on the TV series Derrick and For Heaven’s Sake, has died. He was 82.
Wepper died Monday in a Munich hospice after a long illness that followed the life-threatening sepsis he suffered last year, his family announced.
An actor since childhood, Wepper landed the biggest international role of his career in Cabaret (1972), where he appeared alongside Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem and Joel Grey. As Wendel, he passed as a Protestant and fell in love with wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson).
After the film’s success — it raked in eight Oscars in 1973 — Wepper turned down Hollywood offers and instead took a sidekick role as Harry Klein on the new German crime series Derrick, playing alongside Horst Tappert‘s titular homicide detective, a...

Tyler Perry’s “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween” would be tone deaf, lacking in plot, and almost entirely humorless in any year. That is happens to arrive in theaters amid a cascade of sexual assault survivors sharing their stories about sexual assault doesn’t help its case. Perry has built his slice of a Hollywood empire profiting off the cheap laughter of the most insidious homophobic impulses in society — the ones that tell people there is nothing funnier than a man in a dress. “Boo!” is no exception.
Still, Perry is a versatile character comedian. Madea, the wise-cracking old lady he has played in drag for 15 years, is the movie’s central figure and also its funniest. Perry also plays her “creepy old man” brother, Joe, whose only breaks from slobbering over teenage girls are to call Madea “dude” or “man.” Perry’s discomfort with Madea’s drag is so palpable,...

After three blissful years in remission, she found out in 2013 her breast cancer had returned-with a vengeance. This time it had spread to her bones, lungs and liver and was now stage IV. It's another "Big Brother" Thursday. Follow along for the normal live-blogging fun leading up to eviction. 9:01 p.m. "Tonight, your alliance is in jeopardy," Julie Chen tells us as the episode begins. That seems unfair. The hamsters in the House aren't required to still be in an alliance in the first week. Why do I have to stick with Team America? 9:03 p.m. When we left off, Cody was talking about making a big move, but then not making one, Victoria's head was swelling to the size of a watermelon and causing her to pass out and Donny was better than Team America didn't make "Saving Donny" into their mission for the week. Good times. Donny and Nicole are sitting on the Block. 9:04 p.m. It sure seemed like Donny's elimination was inevitable when we left off, but it's time for some complications in the form of...

No use throwing an old-fashioned Zach tantrum on this very languid Thursday morning. Let's face the facts like cool, serene Derrick: The Wednesday edition of "Big Brother" was criminally dull this week, and that's -- Stuart Smalley voice engaged! -- Ok. The rigged Pov challenge resulted in an expected victory for the Detonators against Donny, Christine found herself floundering in her un-fascinating second life on the show, and Victoria commanded almost 80 seconds of screentime by inviting new teeth into her mouth. Yes, that's right: Victoria's teeth are more exciting houseguests than Victoria. To help us analyze the remaining players in the game, we invited our pal Andy Herren -- the winner of "Big Brother 15" -- to drop some commentary about the houseguests. We'll handle this in an orderly, completely asinine fashion. Cody: Hot Guy Playing a Cold War Andy Herren: Okay, so Cody has been getting a lot...

I thought about it. Then I thought about it again. Turns out I'm not exaggerating or brainwashed (like Zingbot, our precious gyrating robot pal who visited the houseguests this week) regarding this week's episode. It really was fantastic, from the stupid Team America challenge to the Pov game to the climactic final moment. Best episode of the season? Could be. Here are five reasons why. 1. Donny is innocent but loves being scary as hell. For whatever reason, Donny has ended up outside the game's major alliance and there doesn't seem to be much of a way in. Our poor bearded chickadee. Sigh. But you have to give Donny "props" (quoth Zingbot) for using one of the few tools left in his arsenal: manipulation of the most impressionable person in the house, Zach. The little speech Donny gave Zach that planted necessary paranoia in his head about getting backdoored? Flawless. And also terrifying.

Here's a meager suggestion: Cherish this time now, because we've arrived at the most enjoyable stage of the "Big Brother" season. While there are still plenty of obvious losers with cellophane eyes and candy brains who need to leave Chenbot Manor and head back to their Not So Elite modeling gigs, we've finally arrived at the moment where we can recognize everyone in the house, identify their weaknesses and strengths, and make real predictions. During last night's Power of Veto episode, I came up with five big points to consider as the season progresses. To validate my points, I'm dragging along Andy Herren -- the winner of BB15 -- to share his thoughts on the players too. Here are our five biggest takeaway's from Wednesday's Pov spectacular. 1. Donny is the best. And the worst. Andy Herren: I hate Donny. Don’t get me wrong, I Love Donny, but that’s why I hate him.

Also renewed: Cinemax’s Banshee which means more Antony Starr hotness and Hoon Lee fierceness.

With the upcoming Berlinale competition premiere of Die geliebten Schwestern (The Beloved Sisters, actually shot back in 2012), Dominik Graf remains in the festival spotlight after a big Rotterdam retrospective last year (full disclosure: programmed and accompanied by the Ferroni Brigade) introduced the work of this astonishing—and astonishingly prolific—German director to international audiences. But while his Berlin-bound Schiller epic is one of Graf's increasingly rare excursions into the theatrical terrain, his TV schedule has been as hectic as ever, with several new works lined up for release this year. Thus, somewhat shockingly, 2013 saw only a single Graf premiere: Aus der Tiefe der Zeit ("From the Depths of Time") is his third contribution for Germany's enduringly popular prime time crime show Tatort ("Crime Scene"), and confirms Graf's maddening tempo—both in its appearance and execution: The episode was shot in late spring...

Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

From The Wolverine to The To Do List, here's what to see and what to skip in theaters this weekend: See This:The To Do List Every generation needs its Porky's. Hey, that's not a bad thing - you don't want to know how many times I've seen Kim Cattrall howl like Lassie. It just warms my deviant heart that this particularly funny raunch-fest comes from the female perspective. Parks and Recreation's delightful Aubrey Plaza stars as Brandy Klark, high-school valedictorian and confirmed virgin. Determined to lose her v-card before college, Brandy makes a list of sexual acts to complete,...

San Diego (AP) - It's not a mystery: "Veronica Mars" is really coming to the big screen.
"Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas, star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast previewed footage Friday at Comic-Con from the upcoming fan-funded film.
The cult, teenage gumshoe TV series was canceled in 2007 after three seasons.
Earlier this year, Thomas used crowd-funding site Kickstarter to pull in $2 million in less than a day to make a new movie. He eventually gathered more than $5.7 million in 30 days.
The footage that was teased didn't give away too much of the plot as it showed an adult Mars as a hot-shot New York lawyer being interviewed with a character played by Jamie Lee Curtis.
In the film, Mars returns to her hometown of Neptune, Calif., to meet up with her old pals for their high school reunion and solve another mystery.

Berlin — Reports that the late German actor Horst Tappert, best known for his longtime role as dapper TV sleuth Stefan Derrick, served in a feared Nazi SS unit prompted at least one European broadcaster to announce Saturday that it would drop the show's reruns from its schedule.
Dutch TV station Max pulled reruns of the show, which was produced from 1974 to 1998, after daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published documents Friday showing the actor had been in the SS during World War II.
"Derrick" was one of the most widely syndicated German TV shows, broadcast in over 100 countries including China, Australia, France and Norway.
"We are not going to honor an actor like this who has lied about his past," Dutch public broadcaster Nos quoted Max chairman Jan Slagter as saying.

For a show that’s built on the rather efficient structural hook of a kill list, Arrow has been awfully coy about explaining why it is a dusty old ledger is the guiding force behind Oliver Queen’s revenge. Yes, the last earthly possession your father gives you before handing off the responsibility of redeeming his soon-to-be-dead ass would have significance for most, but there’s always been something of a mystery to why it is Oliver follows the list with such dogmatic fervor. It’s completely blank the first time we see it in an island flashback, which only further clouded the question of how a spoiled trust fund babe with an empty pocket journal turned into Starling City’s angel of corporate death.
The ongoing mystery of what happened to Oliver on the island, and how it’s affecting him now, is proving to be the area where Arrow’s footing is surest,...

Tyga's careless world was hit with quite a bit of drama on Monday night following a concert in Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha police confirmed with MTV News that two members of Tyga's entourage were shot and suffered minor wounds when a van that the Young Money rapper was traveling in took on gunfire after his show at the Sokol Auditorium in downtown.
Tyga's artist Honey Cocaine, real name Sochitla Sal, took to Twitter early Tuesday morning (March 20) and confirmed that she was one of the people shot. "Got shot and I'm not dead. #LoveLifeAndGod," she wrote.
The police report confirms that Honey was struck in the arm and was transported to Creighton University Medical Center. The second victim, Derrick Lowe, was...

Cars 2 3D Blu-Ray Combo Pack Walt Disney Home Entertainment 2011/Rated G/Running Time 106 Mins List Price: $49.99 – Available November 1, 2011 Pixar Animation's seventh feature, 2006's Cars was perhaps their first film that didn't work for me. I didn't hate their tale of a hotshot race car who hits a detour and ends up stranded in a small town, but it was perhaps the first time I felt disappointed by their efforts. A few years earlier, when the project was announced, it seemed like a weird premise – an animated film set in a world populated by anthropomorphic motor vehicles – but I always saw John Lasseter as a genius and if anyone could pull it off, it would be him. Or so I thought. Lasseter made an entertaining and visually impressive feature, yet the story was lacking and to the experienced moviegoer it felt like a remake of the 1991 Michael J. Fox vehicle Doc Hollywood.

Derrick Prince and Christine Corley have been eliminated from MasterChef. Web designer Derrick and single mom Christine were both axed from the competition in a surprise double elimination on Tuesday night. The remaining eight cooks had been tasked with recreating Gordon Ramsay's favorite childhood dish, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Unfortunately for Derrick, the judges thought the gorgonzola in his tomato soup overpowered the entire dish, with Graham Elliot saying: "It's like tomato and cream and bacon hanging out at the schoolyard and then the gorgonzola bully comes and beats the crap out of them." Gordon said the task had been creating a tomato soup, not cheese. However, the judges encouraged Derrick never to give up on his culinary dreams, with Joe Bastianich offering to meet him for an espresso in New York to talk about (more)...

The game of he said/he said may be over on Deadliest Catch now that Capt. Derrick Ray is no longer skipper of the Cornelia Marie, but it’s ongoing on land where Ray and Josh Harris continue to express different opinions about why their king crab season ended abruptly. Last week, fans watched as the crew of the Cornelia Marie – which Josh and his fellow deckhand brother Jake are now part owners of — told Ray they were done fishing for the elusive blue crab that he couldn’t seem to find. On Tuesday’s episode, they saw Ray, who...

After the death of beloved Capt. Phil Harris of the F/V Cornelia Marie last winter, fans of Discovery's Tuesday-night reality hit "Deadliest Catch," took his twentysomething sons, deckhands Josh and Jake Harris, to their hearts.
In "Thick as Thieves," the episode airing Tuesday, May 24, some of those hearts could be broken.
Everyone -- Discovery, Original Productions, Phil Harris' friends and the brothers themselves -- wanted to get the Cornelia Marie back in Alaska's Bering Sea for the start of king-crab season last fall.
As fans saw when the new season of the show premiered on April 12, the boat was there, under Capt. Derrick Ray, a longtime friend of Capt. Harris', who took over the boat for the last half of opilio-crab season after a stroke felled Harris.
Now co-owners of the boat with their father's partner, Cornelia Marie Devlin, the Harris brothers were also on board, working as deckhands.
