Ron Thompson, the unheralded actor who starred on Broadway for Charles Gordone in the Pulitzer Prize-winning No Place to Be Somebody and played father and son musicians for Ralph Bakshi in the animated cult classic American Pop, has died. He was 83.
Filmmaker Joe Black told The Hollywood Reporter that he found Thompson in his Van Nuys apartment on Saturday afternoon. The two had worked together in eight features, including Hate Horses (2017), Chicks, Man (2018) and Suffrage (2023), and Black visited him a couple times a week to help him out.
“For a man of his age, he was so full of life, he had such a presence,” Black said. He called Thompson “the Sam Jackson to my Tarantino.”
In 1969, Thompson originated off-Broadway the role of Shanty Mulligan in the Joseph Papp-produced No Place to Be Somebody, starring Ron O’Neal, then accompanied the drama to Broadway and on a tour around the country.

Nicole Avant will release her memoir, “Think You’ll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief With Grit, Grace, and Gratitude,” in October, Variety can exclusively reveal.
In the book, the philanthropist, filmmaker and diplomat writes candidly about coming to terms with the tragic death of her mother, Jacqueline, who was fatally shot during a robbery at her Beverly Hills home in 2021.
“Getting out there and being creative helps me a lot,” Avant says. “I am grieving and I am crying and I am angry and I’m furious at what has happened — there is no denying that. But I’m going to put one foot forward because the greatest thing I can do for my mom is live my life. The greatest way to honor her soul is to live my life to the fullest.”

The great acting legend Sidney Poitier died in January at age 94. He did not live to see the thrilling new documentary on his life and career, Sidney, which had its world premiere Saturday night at the Toronto Film Festival. However, it had its blessing, and that of his family, for a film that has been percolating and in development and then production for five years. And although Poitier himself didn’t get to see the finished work, everyone else will beginning on September 23 when it begins streaming on Apple TV+ and playing in selected theaters.
With Oprah Winfrey on board as a producer (with Derik Murray) and Reginald Hudlin as director, Poitier gets an extraordinarily comprehensive and wide-ranging look at his life told in linear fashion and narrated by himself through the use of eight hours of interview footage done in 2012 with Winfrey, as well as other archival interviews. In 2018, Network Entertainment founder Derik Murray met with Sidney Poitier to discuss making a documentary about the star’s life and career. Over the next two years, Murray established a foundation of trust with Poitier and his family, who all eventually agreed to the film. The result is “Sidney,” an Apple TV+ doc that examines the legacy of Poitier, who died earlier this year at 94. Directed by Reginald Hudlin (“The Black Godfather”), the doc was produced by Oprah Winfrey. One of the most acclaimed and recognizable movie stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and the first Black man to receive the best actor award, Poitier was also a director and an activist in the Civil Rights Movement. The film includes interviews with Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Robert Redford, Lenny Kravitz, Barbra Streisand and Spike Lee as well as an audio-recorded interview with Poitier’s longtime friend and colleague Harry Belafonte.

"He became that mentor for us all. He became that Godfather." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary titled The Black Godfather, introducing us to one of the most beloved behind-the-scenes men in the world: Clarence Avant. Not many know of him, but everyone knows the people he coached and advised - from presidents to athletes to major entertainers of all kinds. Directed by Oscar-nominee Reginald Hudlin and featuring interviews with Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Bill Withers, Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Lionel Richie, Suzanne de Passe, David Geffen, Jerry Moss, Cicely Tyson, and Jamie Foxx, among others, The Black Godfather documentary pulls the curtain back on the maestro himself, shining a spotlight on the man who's spent his entire career ensuring that it shined on others. This seems like an entertaining and amusing documentary, that also looks like it's packed with some great intelligence and wisdom.

Clarence Avant is one of the music business’s most legendary executives. Mentored by Joe Glaser, the longtime manager of Louis Armstrong, Avant has been in the business since the 1950s, managing Sarah Vaughan, R&B singer Little Willie John and others, before he became a powerhouse at Venture and Sussex Records, signing Bill Withers and more while his own a broadcasting company and producing films like Paramount’s Save the Children.

The first trailer for “The Black Godfather,” Reginald Hudlin’s documentary about black entertainment trailblazer Clarence Avant, has been released. The film features interviews with Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, David Geffen, Clive Davis, Diane Warren, Lionel Richie and Irving Azoff, among other industry titans. Former president Barack Obama also makes an appearance.
Hudlin spent three years making what he terms “a secret movie” about Avant, the music executive who rose from a manager of jazz artists in the 1950s to discovering Bill Withers, producing black-oriented theater productions and films, launching one of the first fully black-owned radio stations and offering his advice as a mentor to countless artists and executives.
In “The Black Godfather,” premiering June 7 on Netflix and in select theaters, Hudlin chronicles Avant’s life, from fighting his way through Jim Crow America to eventually having an impact on luminaries as diverse as Quincy Jones, Muhammad Ali and Bill Clinton.

True Justice: Street Wars sees the Aikido 7th dan and musical actor extravaganza return to the screen. This is a return from real life drama Steven Seagal: Lawman back to the fictitious world of the undercover drugs cop. If you are fan of Steven Seagal you will be delighted to see that he's working at developing a thirteen-part series for True Justice. Street Wars is another two-part film and actually follows on from the opening two episodes of Deadly Crossing. This is the first time Seagal fans get to see him within a TV series, a successful move made by other movie martial artist actors such as Chuck Norris in Walker Texas Ranger (which I remember to be okay for its time.) Last year Chuck turned seventy and was actually made an honorary Ranger in real life. Seagal also has real police experience, having been a reserve deputy chief for Jefferson Parish in Louisina.

Apparently Steven Seagal turned down a role in The Expendables (2010) over a falling out with the film’s producer regarding the ageing actor's poor run of straight to DVD releases, leaving him unable to join Sylvester Stallone in what could have been his first big screen appearance since 2002's Half Past Dead. Instead, Seagal wrote True Justice: Street Wars (2011), another series of straight to DVD releases that pass off feature length episodes of his True Justice TV series as films.

True Justice: Street Wars (2011) is an high octane, white knuckle roller coaster ride, fuel-injected with a cocktail of Red Bull, Nicaraguan Coffee and a family sized packet of Pro-Plus. Let's be honest - the glory days of Hard to Kill (1990) & the marvellous Under Siege (1992) are long gone and despite an entertaining role in Machete (2010), Steven Seagal is better known these days as being a guitar player with an enormous head.Read more »...
