"Nightmare as a Child" isn't the best episode of "The Twilight Zone," or even the fifth or sixth best. On IMDb, the episode has the 93rd slot when ranking by user ratings, putting it in the lower half of the series' 153-episode run, while Paste's ranking puts it in a more generous 45th position. The episode, which appears late in the show's first season, could be more tightly plotted and punctuated with stronger lines, but it still deserves far more credit than it gets. "Nightmare as a Child" is actually one of the most upsetting episodes of the entire mind-bending series, as it examines a human phenomenon that's far more disturbing than aliens or robots: repressed memories.
The episode tells the story of Helen Foley, a teacher who meets a precocious and unsettling little girl (Terry Burnham) on the stairs outside her apartment. We know little about Helen except that she loves kids,...

Dianne Crittenden, casting director on the original Star Wars who also worked on Pretty Woman, Spider-Man 2 and dozens of other films during a 40-year career, died March 19 at her home in Pacific Palisades. She was 82.
Her friend and colleague Ilene Starger confirmed her passing to Deadline.
Born on August 6, 1941, in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, NY, Crittenden got her start in the entertainment industry working with Howard Zieff, a photographer and director. They worked on advertising campaigns, TV commercials and films.
Her first project as casting director was Terrence Malick’s 1973 drama Badlands, starring Martin Sheen-Sissy Spacek, on which Bruce Springsteen based his song “Nebraska” a decade later. Crittenden worked on a few other films and TV shows, including the Emmy-winning 1976 Sally Field miniseries Sybil, before land the casting-director role of a lifetime — a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Joanne Woodward and her husband Paul Newman were one of Hollywood’s golden couples. Both together and separately the actors contributed to some of the most iconic films ever made. Although she has retreated from public life in recent years due to health concerns, her relevance remains strong. Allison Janney made a special point of thanking her when she won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “I, Tonya.”
Woodward started her career on the New York stage and studied at two of New York’s leading acting schools of the day — the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors Studio. Success then came to her quite quickly when she won an Oscar for “The Three Faces of Eve,” which was only her third film. She would go on to earn three more Oscar nominations as Best Actress in the subsequent years of her 40-year film career.

Plagued with casting and production challenges, Anatomy of a Fall, the French film now Oscar-nominated for best picture, best director, best actress, best editing and best original screenplay, was no easy film to make.
David Thion, one of the producers on the film directed by Justine Triet and starring Sandra Hüller as a woman who tries to prove her innocence in the death of her husband, talks to THR about why Triet wanted to shoot in an actual courtroom instead of a set, why it was difficult to cast the role of Daniel in the film, and why the film gives no definitive answer on whether Hüller’s character is guilty or not.
How did you get involved with the film and what made you want to be a part of it?
I did a previous movie with Justine Triet called Sybil, which was shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

Two of the most enigmatic actresses of our time, Elle Fanning and Sarah Paulson, will lead Mirrah Foulkes’ new film project, I Am Sybil. Foulkes directs from a script she co-wrote with Jen Silverman, recreating the true story of Sybil, one of the first widely recognized cases of dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder).
Sybil was the name given to Shirley Mason, who, in a study conducted by Flora Rheta Schreiber, examined Mason’s treatment for Mpd by psychologist Connie Wilbur. The forthcoming film draws inspiration from Debbie Nathan‘s 2011 novel Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, examining flaws in Schreiber’s findings.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to a close on Saturday, May 27 after two weeks of films, celebrities, parties and interviews in the small city on the French Riviera. Now that the prizes have been given out, we can start looking at what could be top contenders for next year’s Oscars. Let’s analyze the results from this year’s festival and see this history that each category has when it comes to the Academy Awards.
Over the past several years the festival has been a springboard for major players in the Oscar derby. We’ve really seen it be an influence in the International Feature category where in-competition films have been nominated a regular basis. Recent Cannes films that ended up being top awards contenders in above the line categories include “Triangle of Sadness,” “Drive My Car,” “Parasite,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “BlacKkKlansman.

Sandra Hüller enters Justine Triet’s Sybil midway, as the hilariously frazzled director of a European co-production who keeps barking in English while trying to keep the set moving. Hüller’s appearance is unexpected in several ways: a film about a therapist-client relationship suddenly shifts focus to The Shoot From Hell, and while the expected reference point for a European movie shot on an island would be Contempt, Triet instead pays homage to Roberto Rossellini’s Stromboli. Nor is this the film’s final narrative slight-of-hand, as Sibyl‘s final act is a drama about alcoholism—throughout, the thematic emphases are always slightly off from where you’d […]

The lineup for the 76th installment of the Cannes Film Festival has finally been announced. Nineteen films will be competing to take home the prestigious Palme d’Or, including a record six films helmed by women. The festival will be taking place in the French Riviera from May 16 to May 27. This year’s jury will be headed by Ruben Östlund, who won his second Palme d’Or last year for “Triangle of Sadness.”
Knowing a filmmaker’s previous track record at Cannes can sometimes help give an idea as to who might be in the best position to claim the Palme. For instance, five of this year’s entries come from directors who have previously won the Palme. Another five are from auteurs who have had previous films win a prize in the main competition other than the Palme. Another five are from directors having their first film screen in the main competition.

“Delivering babies,” ponders one of the Mantle twins in a preview clip from the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series “Dead Ringers.” “We’re opening a birthing center so we can do literally just that until the end of time, nonstop babies,” says the other. But “the lab is the f*cking thing” they’re both really interested in. Watch the brief scene above for a sneak peek of the series, which premieres April 21.
“Dead Ringers” is a gender-flipped update of the 1988 psychological thriller starring Jeremy Irons and tells the story of twin gynecologists who take advantage of the fact that no one can tell them apart. Directed by David Cronenberg, the film won Best Actor prizes for Irons from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Chicago Film Critics Association. Cronenberg’s work behind the camera was awarded by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Colombian auteur Ana Maria Hermida (“The Firefly”) is directing an all-star cast in Catalyst Studios’ “Alix.”
The film introduces Cristal Aparcio (“Enfermeras”) to international audiences in the title role of Alix. Based on Hermida’s script, the film also stars Natalia Reyes (“Terminator Dark Fate”), Roberto Urbina (“Snowpiercer”), Carlos Bardem (“El Cid”) and Carolina Guerra (“Animal Kingdom”). Principal photography has begun in the jungles of Rio Claro, Colombia.
A redemptive coming-of-age tale about the discovery of inner strength and new beginnings, the film is a magic realist tale that tells the story of Conejo (Urbina), a skilled soldier, and a young girl, Alix (Aparicio), who he recruits to be a child soldier in the Colombian jungle under the command of the charismatic Ramon (Bardem). Alix, innocent and optimistic, deals with the trauma of her hard circumstances by letting her imagination journey to a magical realm.

At the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday, Sally Field was given the acting union’s highest honor: the Life Achievement Award, recognizing “career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment.”
The award was presented to her by her The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Andrew Garfield, who remarked “you evoke awe in every actor’s heart” in his introduction, speaking to Field. “You never drink the Kool-Aid of your own brilliance,” Garfield said. He spoke about Field leading the way for actresses in a misogynistic industry, fighting for women’s and Lgbtqia+ rights. “Sally, you show us how to live a life devoted to art, love and service,” he concluded.
In her acceptance speech, Field remarked: “In the fall of 1964, I was standing in front of a camera on a freezing cold beach in Malibu, and I said my first lines of dialogue as a professional actor,” in Gidget. “I first found a stage when I was 12 years old,...

“I didn’t happen on the scene as a purebred,” says Sally Field. “I was the runt of the litter.” Having led three sitcoms by the time she was 28, she first gained notice as a dramatic actor in 1976’s Sybil, for which she earned her first Emmy and, she says, her first chance to put her talent to good use. An accomplished film career ensued, one that saw Field balancing dramas (she won Oscars for lead roles in 1979’s Norma Rae and 1984’s Places in the Heart, plus a nom for her supporting turn in 2012’s Lincoln) and comedies (Smokey and the Bandit, Steel Magnolias, Soapdish, Mrs. Doubtfire and this year’s 80 for Brady). She has also returned to TV multiple times, winning Emmys for a guest spot on ER and a lead role on Brothers & Sisters, the latter also earning her a SAG Award. This year, she will...

As she said when she collected her second Oscar for Best Actress, Sally Field hasn’t had an orthodox career. Plucked out of a drama class when she was barely out of high school Field was cast as the perky surfer girl Gidget for one season on TV. She then did three seasons in the preposterous series “The Flying Nun.” Not exactly the kind of work that would portend a serious new actress had arrived. In fact at the age of 24, Field found herself to be somewhat of an industry joke.
While many sitcom stars who fell into obscurity, Field managed to turn her career around. She began working with famed acting teacher Lee Strasberg and slowly things started to change for her. Joanne Mitchell has racked up more than thirty screen acting credits over the course of a career that goes back thirty years – and Deadline reports that she is now making her feature directorial debut with a psychological horror film called Sybil! Filming is underway in Belgrade, with Rebecca Calder (Wrath of Man) starring alongside James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Sacharissa Claxton (Sandman), Rupert Proctor (Notting Hill), Robyn Rainsford (Letters to April), and Jay Taylor (Red Tails).
Mitchell crafted the story for Sybil with Tracey Sheals, and even directed a 12 minute short version of the concept a few years ago. Dominic Brunt (the 2021 thriller Evie) has written the screenplay for the feature version of Sybil, which will be a twisted tale of a lonely mortician and her macabre quest for the perfect family. The Mortician’s life can be a lonely one. But there are always opportunities for love and revenge.

The pic is produced by Zoe Stewart (Hush) with Cataslyst Studios’ Holly Levow, Mark Pennell, and Paul Kampf. Principal Photography recently began in Belgrade. The cast is rounded out by Rupert Proctor (Notting Hill), Robyn Rainsford (Letters to April), and Jay Taylor (Red Tails).

MK2 Films, which is presenting six movies at the Cannes Film Festival, will be attending the market with a pair of hot new titles, French director Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Israeli helmer Maya Dreifuss’s “Highway 65.”
“Anatomy of a Fall” stars Sandra Hüller, the critically acclaimed German actor of “Toni Erdmann,” as an enigmatic German novelist who is arrested after the mysterious death of her husband at their chalet in the French Alps. The court case examines every aspect of the relationship she had with her husband, while her visually impaired son is called to testify as a witness.
The movie will re-team MK2 Films with Triet, whose latest film “Sybil” competed at Cannes. Fionnuala Jamison, MK2 Films’s managing director, described the film as a “Hitchcockian tale of suspense.” “We were hooked on the script, the complexities of Sandra’s character, and its original premise...

It’s hard to believe that in all the decades that I’ve been an entertainment journalist and Sally Field has been an actor, the two of us have never had a proper conversation about her illustrious career. Until now, that is.
In preparation for our cover interview, I read her searing 2018 memoir “In Pieces” and was saddened to learn about her tortured childhood, being sexually abused by her stepfather, and her struggles with depression, loneliness and self-doubt.
Despite someone’s public persona, of course we never really know what’s going on inside. Along with all the triumphs Field achieved, it’s shocking to know that she endured so much pain in her personal and professional lives. It was bold of her to finally speak her truths in her autobiography, which took seven years to write. Among other things, she revealed what a troubled relationship she had with Burt Reynolds,...

For a show as dominant at the Daytime Emmys as “General Hospital” has been over the course of its run (including a record 13 victories for Best Drama Series), it has a surprisingly mixed track record in the Best Actress race. The show has only won that award three times, for Finola Hughes (1991), Laura Wright (2011), and Maura West (2015). Hughes is nominated again this year, so will she finally break the “Gh” curse by becoming the first lead actress to win twice for the show?

Colleagues of legendary casting director Mike Fenton remembered the industry veteran as a tireless champion of actors who had a keen eye for talent, a great sense of humor and a full life outside of work with a wide circle of friends.
Fenton, who died Dec. 30 at the age of 85, had nearly 300 casting credits to his name and helped launch the careers of such stars as Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Drew Barrymore and Robert Downey Jr. He won the Casting Society of America’s Artios Award in 1996 for Best Casting for TV Nighttime Special for “Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree” and again in 2000 Best Casting for TV Miniseries for “Arabian Nights”
Graham Yost, screenwriter and showrunner known for “Broken Arrow,” “Speed” and FX’s “Justified,” became friendly with Fenton through a running club dubbed Flying Squirrels that the casting pro founded in the 1980s. Yost met his wife, Connie, through the group.

Why win an Emmy for one performance when you can win for two, or three, or four. Sally Field could do that this year with her role as a pop psychologist-turned-super computer in Netflix‘s surreal limited series “Maniac.” And it wouldn’t be the first time Field has won for taking on multiple personae.
One of Field’s most famous TV performances was as the title character in “Sybil,” a young woman who suffered from dissociative identity disorder and exhibited multiple personalities. She won Best Movie/Mini Actress in 1977, which was also her very first Emmy nomination, and the role has become shorthand for any actor who tries to court awards voters by playing multiple parts.

Launched just over 50 years ago by Marin Karmitz and now headed by his sons, Nathanael and Elisha, Paris-based MK2 films accomplished a double deed at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Not only does it have five movies playing in competition for the second consecutive year, it represents in international markets three of the four female-directed films competing, Mati Diop with “Atlantics,” Justine Triet’s “Sybil” and Celine Sciamma with “Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire.”
Aside from the competition, MK2 also has Monia Chokri’s “A Brother’s Love” and Danielle Lessovitz’s “Port Authority” playing in Un Certain Regard.
Nathanael Karmitz and Juliette Schrameck, the managing director of MK2, said the company was not following any quota or positive discrimination to ramp up their roster of female-directed films but were simply drawn to the originality and quality of the projects.

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled a lineup for its 72nd edition that includes some high-profile Hollywood titles, genre movies and films from 13 female directors. The official selection has been applauded by many for mixing established auteurs like Pedro Almodovar (“Pain and Glory”), Terrence Malick (“A Hidden Life”) and Xavier Dolan (“Matthias and Maxime”) with newcomers such as French-Senegalese helmer Mati Diop (“Atlantique”) and Ladj Ly (“Les Miserables”).
Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux sat with Variety to discuss the showing of political films, the presence of women filmmakers in the official selection and the festival’s relationship with American cinema.
Although this year’s competition roster is less political than last year, you have a few politically minded films, especially “Les Miserables” which is inspired by the 2005 riots in Paris. This year has been marked by widespread civic unrest in France. To what extent do you take into consideration current events during the selection process?...

Joanne Woodward and her husband Paul Newman were one of Hollywood’s golden couples. Both together and separately the actors contributed to some of the most iconic films ever made. While Newman passed away in 2008, Woodward is still with is and on February 27, 2019, celebrates her 89th birthday. Although she has retreated from public life in recent years due to health concerns, her relevance remains strong. Allison Janney made a special point of thanking her when she won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “I, Tonya.”

Japanese auteur Koji Fukada’s “A Girl Missing” tops the slate of MK2 Films. The shingle also has Agnes Varda’s “Varda by Agnes” and “Jessica Forever” playing at the Berlin Film Festival. MK2 is introducing “A Girl Missing” to buyers at the European Film Market.
“A Girl Missing” reunites Fukada with the star of his Un Certain Regard prize-winning “Harmonium,” Mariko Tsutsui, in the story of a private nurse who has become part of the family she works for until a fateful day when one of the daughters disappears. The media soon reveals the kidnapper to be the nurse’s nephew.
“Anchored by Koji Fukada’s meticulous dissection of flawed and failing family relationships, ‘A Girl Missing’ is a carefully crafted film which will surprise audiences as the story unfolds,” said Juliette Schrameck, the managing director of MK2 Films.

She found work in a series of well regarded TV movies and won an Emmy for the miniseries “Sybil” about a child abuse victim that developed 16 different...

The stories of two women we have lived with for decades are arriving in the midst of the #Metoo movement. They once seemed the epitome of strong, brave role models. But we now get fuller pictures, filled with self-doubts and men who loved them but also demeaned them and left them seeking more respect. And ultimately, independence.
Sally Field’s memoir has just been released, welcomed with positive reviews. At the same time, a two-hour documentary on the life (or lives) of Jane Fonda has premiered on HBO.
Yet more accolades for the actresses, who have never worked together but are good friends. Small wonder, as the parallels between their histories are uncanny. They are women we have admired for their work, their longevity and their willingness to stretch. Now, after we have watched, and read, their painfully honest stories, they earn our sympathy as well.

Emmy voters love rewarding performers who show their range and versatility by playing multiple roles — just look at Tatiana Maslany‘s victory as various clones on “Orphan Black” (Best Drama Actress, 2016). This year no one fits that bill more than “Twin Peaks” scene-stealer Kyle MacLachlan. In Showtime’s revival of the cult fave MacLachlan takes on three different characters: FBI Agent Dale Cooper, Cooper’s evil doppelganger, and the dimwitted Dougie Jones. Will MacLachlan follow in Maslany’s footsteps at the 2018 Emmys?
SEEKyle MacLachlan (‘Twin Peaks: The Return’): Playing 3 characters this time was a ‘new adventure’ [Complete Interview Transcript]
“To be honest, it was exciting,” MacLachlan told us when we recently interviewed him about the pressure of playing three roles. “[With Cooper] there was a connection to the past, but these two new roles definitely pointed toward the future and they were asking me as an actor to do things that I had never really done before.

As a man with multiple personalities (23, to be exact), James McAvoy is enthralling to watch in in M. Night Shyamalan's Split, but just as intriguing is his psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher, played by the great Betty Buckley, who plays a nail-biting mental chess match with her multi-dimensional patient in some of the film's most fascinating scenes.
With Split now out on Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Buckley (whom many may know as Abby Bradford from Eight is Enough) about working with Shyamalan on both Split and The Happening, playing Miss Collins in Brian De Palma's Carrie (1976) and Margaret White in the ’80s Broadway musical adaptation of Stephen King's seminal novel, her new album Story Songs, and more.
Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with me today and congratulations on Split. I loved the film,...

“Nothing has ever been easy for me,” says the actress Sally Field as we sit down in the kitchen of her Pacific Palisades home to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. “Not one moment of my career except Gidget — ‘Hey, be Gidget,'” the 70-year-old adds in reference to her first professional role, which made her a star when she was just 17. “Everything else has been a struggle. Nothing ever fell in my lap. When I won an Emmy for Sybil, when I won an Oscar for Norma Rae, when I won an Oscar for Places in the Heart, whatever it was, it didn’t mean, ‘Open the doors, the scripts are falling in!’ It never, ever happened for me like that. I don’t know if it was me,...
