The late rapper, who was killed at the age of 20, was known for both his captivating music and a history of violence, a troubling legacy explored in a new documentary
In one of many chilling scenes in the XXXTentacion documentary Look at Me, the young musical artist whose real name was Jahseh Onfrey leaves a Florida jail and Googles himself. It’s March 2017. At the top of the search results is Onfrey’s bio, accompanied with a mugshot from his 2016 arrest for brutally imprisoning and assaulting Geneva Ayala – his girlfriend at the time. The detailed bio, evidence that he made it, has him squealing.
While Onfrey was inside for nearly six months without a data plan, a 2015 song he uploaded to SoundCloud called Look at Me went viral alongside that photo of his tatted face, Cruella-styled black-and-blond locks and piercing stare. His raps and rap sheet captivated the internet. His...

The meteoric rise and sudden death of troubled rapper XXXTentacion is the focus of a new documentary coming to Hulu later this month.
Look at Me: XXXTentacion charts Florida teenager Jahseh Onfroy’s overnight ascendance as a SoundCloud rapper, only to have his career marred by mental health struggles and admitted domestic violence. Onfroy was killed during a robbery outside a Florida car dealership in June 2018.

Back in 2013 on an app called Soundcloud, Jahseh Onfroy published his first song “News/Flock”. His first official mixtape was released in March 2014, simply titled “XXX,” this then spawned multiple releases in the following years and Jahseh’s popularity grew.
Now people know him as Xxxtentacion, his debut album from 2017 had reached the number 2 slot on Billboard’s top 200.
“Look At Me: Xxxtentacion” is titled after Jahseh’s first mainstream hit “Look At Me” which was released in 2017.

XXXTentacion, who became one of his generation’s biggest hip-hop stars before being murdered in a robbery at age 20, was candid about assuming the role of “villain” in his music, which he ascribed to a knack for marketing. Looking at his literal rap sheet, of course, it didn’t seem like just a persona. Known in real life as Jahseh Onfroy, the performer was awaiting trial on felony charges of home invasion and aggravated battery when he was arrested for imprisoning and brutally beating his girlfriend while she was apparently pregnant. So, with that as one of the most memorable parts of his legacy, it’s understandable if you’d want to take a pass on anything looking to “humanize” the late rapper, as does “Look at Me: XXXTentacion,” a documentary that premiered at SXSW this week (with a Hulu debut set for June 10).

Every great singer has her own signature, and Dionne Warwick’s, in her defining period in the ’60s and ’70s, was the gorgeous wavery ethereal slowness of her vibrato. It allowed her to hit a note, sustain it with that beautiful wide tremolo, and invest it with a yearning that was pure enough to pierce you. You can hear it in her very first recording, “Don’t Make Me Over,” which is the first record she made of a song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, or in her first sublime recording, “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (1963), where she sings a line like “Anyone who had a heart, could look at me,/And know that I lov-v-v-e you…,” the last two words ringing out like bells, tied to each other by a curlicue of emotion. Warwick didn’t just sing the notes — she lofted them into the air, so that they floated into your heart.

The fear of seemingly harmless strangers that’s heightened during our era of online “relationships” (not to mention Covid) is cannily exploited in actor-turned-writer-director Christian Tafdrup’s “Speak No Evil.” Building on the thorny couple dynamics of his prior features “Parents” and “A Horrible Woman,” this excruciatingly.
Tafdrup’s squirm-inducing tale is premiering in Sundance’s Midnight section, and should find ready berth among genre fans, with strong potential for remake bids. (Distribution rights have already been secured by horror streaming service Shudder.) At the same time, its all-too-palpable cruelty will repel some viewers, in the same way such prior atypical horrors as the original “Wolf Creek” and both editions of “Funny Games” did.
A grim final destination is all the more upsetting because the over-the-top melodrama of Sune Kolst’s orchestral score, applied straightaway to a simple opening shot of a car driving down a road at night, suggests...

Good Deed Entertainment’s genre label Cranked Up Films has acquired U.S. rights to American Badger, an action film written and directed by and starring stunt veteran Kirk Caouette. It is set for a digital and VOD release on June 15.
Caouette plays a hitman known as Badger, the nickname that came from his wife, who died 4451 days ago. Since her passing he has been living the life of a recluse, operating in the shadows. But all that is about to change with his latest assignment: Make friends with a sex worker named Velvet (Andrea Stefancikova) and extract information about the inner workings of an Albanian gang she works for. An unlikely romance follows until Badger’s handler tells him that it is time to take down the syndicate — and the first person he must kill is Velvet.

Exclusive: ITV has commissioned a series of four drama shorts, working titled Unsaid Stories…, which have been inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
In an anthology format not dissimilar to the Jeff Pope-produced Isolation Stories that ITV aired during the coronavirus lockdown, Greenacre Films — the producer behind Netflix’s Michaela Coel-fronted feature Been So Long — will make the 15-minute episodes to be broadcast next month.
Each episode has diverse talent at its heart and ITV head of drama Polly Hill said they are “unique, fresh and engaging” stories about “real people in completely real situations, confronting and exploring racism and prejudice.”
Jerome Bucchan-Nelson, a writer on Sky hit drama Bulletproof, will pen Generational. It explores the relationship between a Black father and his teenage daughter, when William catches Justina sneaking out to attend a Black Lives Matter demonstration. Alrick Riley (NCIS) is the director, while Barbara Emile (EastEnders) is producing.

South by Southwest, the film festival held in Austin, Texas, will show seven competition projects from its virtual cinema program on Oculus TV from May 22 to May 31.
SXSW was canceled by local government officials just a week before it was set to kick off in in March. However, 39 shorts, features and episodic programs were streamed on Amazon Prime Video between April 27 and May 6.
The newly announced virtual cinema lineup includes Mélanie de Riberolles’ “Notre-Dame de Paris: A unique journey back in time,” in which video game company Ubisoft created a Vr tour of the Notre-Dame Cathedral after it was nearly destroyed in the 2019 fire. Ubisoft has been collaborating with historians collecting data and testimonials to build Notre-Dame as part of its Assassin’s Creed Unity game.
Other titles in the lineup are “After the Fallout,” “The Curious Life of Bill Mont,” “Ferenj: A Graphic Memoir in Vr,” “Gr8tness,” “Look at Me...

SXSW continues to forge ahead despite being canceled in March due to the coronavirus. The Austin-based festival continues to allow its originally scheduled lineup to shine with the SXSW 2020 Virtual Cinema on Oculus TV which will be available May 22-31.
The virtual cinema event will serve as the global launch of a collaboration that will present seven 360 projects that were entered into the SXSW Virtual Cinema Competition. Each of these works showcases how virtual reality can take users to places they can’t go and experience stories alongside the storytellers — perfect for a time of isolation and social distancing.
“We are so excited to offer global audiences an opportunity to experience these phenomenal 360 projects on Oculus TV,” said Blake Kammerdeiner, SXSW Virtual Cinema Programmer. “This sampling of what would have been a robust Xr program is sure to delight audiences, and we are thankful to OculusTV for helping us showcase these artists and projects.
