Some of the alumni from Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) (George Cole, Jack Vacek, Butch Stockton) are seen in the film. Also the black 1977 Cadillac Coupe DeVille seen in the film has a Ronald Moran Cadillac license plate - the same car dealer shown in Gone in 60 Seconds.
The original working title was Smokey, but when Jack Vacek discovered that a new movie Smokey and the Bandit (1977) was being filmed, the title was changed to avoid confusion.
Jack Vacek wrote the script with his wife, Patrice Schubert.
Due to the film's limited budget, most of the cars used in the film were bought under $200.
Reissued in 1978, along with H.B. Halicki's Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) at some drive-ins, under the title SPLIT-SECOND SMOKEY.
