The protest scene is a re-creation of a game-changing 1972 demonstration held in the Paris suburb of Bobigny, attended by prominent figures, in defense of a young woman who had had an abortion after being raped.
Director Agnès Varda signed the "Manifeste des 343" (English: "Manifesto of the 343") in 1971. This was an act of civil disobedience by 343 prominent French women who publicly admitted to having had abortions, which were illegal, at the time. The signatories exposed themselves to criminal liability in signing this petition to protest the French abortion ban, which wasn't lifted until 1975.
This film is part of the Criterion Collection, spine #978.
